It's official.

Winter's gonna come hit hard, with what forecasters are saying.

Who's got what, who's riding where, and who's already training?

Wednesday september 14th is the Vancouver screening of the Art of Flight.
[Sequel to That's It That's All]

And I know of a few other premier screenings as well. I'll post up when I get the chance.

And go.......

sickly!

i should be able to ride seymour a few times this year, and as well grouse. Provided my friend still gets me passes :( I'm all dependent on him.

Trying my best to not pay to ride this season. I did so a little bit last year....

Why must cypress pass (even at group rate discount) be so expensive. D:
Still have a day to debate whether or not to go with cypress pass($450) or seymour pass($250).

Any pros and cons from you guys?

you make the call.

cypress has more terrain, more parking, more lifts.

but it also has more idiots, more idiots, and more idiots.

Seymour as a whole is one big terrain park, where they groom everything to park like fashion.

it has a better PARK, where cypress is going to build a new park, but we've yet to see what the results will be.

Seymour has more pro riders that go there, and amateur riders that are up and coming pros. cypress will have a pro team if they ever get their act together and give away passes.

Seymour is family owned, cypress is a corporate owned mountain.

then there's grouse........

I'll be rockin my y2play this season at grouse, and contemplating buying a cypress pass. Most likely go with the Silver pass, that gold pass is too pricey.
Pickin up a 4runner this weekend to help get me to some interior mountains for some pow pow this spring! :)

Where's the Cypress pass $450? I've only see the $900 pass or ~$760? with the group rate.

I think I'm going to be riding Whistler this year. Student rate is $469 and I've got a friend to drive us up.

Its the group buy rate that ended Sept 15th. It is like $399 for a silver pass. So approx. $450 after tax.

the silver pass works out to 496 after taxes. I just bought one for my gf.

Group rate clearly states Silver Pass. I guess when we say "group rate" we are talking about two different things. I am not talking about the Big 5 thing, which I know does not apply to the Silver Pass.

all gravy, i wasn't quite sure if it was or wasn't the same thing, but either way it's still fairly cheap for a pass. however the black outs aren't something to look forward to, since you're still going to have to pay to ride on weekends, and those holidays.

Seymour passes are still on sale until september 30th?
Cypress pass rates will go up as of midnight apparently? Kinda odd that they would pick September 18th as a cutoff date.
Grouse- Buy the y2play in the springtime :P
Whistler rates will go up Oct. 10th, considering picking up one of the 15 day passes, but $919 is alotta pennies.

On a side note- hunting for a winter vehicle (4x4) that'll get me to mountains :) recommendations?

the only reason that september 18th was the cut off is to allow people to purchase on the weekend. makes complete sense if you ask me.

Whistler 15 day pass is a great deal regardless of how you look at it, consider that even the 7-11 discounted rates are still 70+ bucks, going up 15 times is still over a grand.

you do a 15 day pass, you're good till may of next year. and think about it this way....you do even twice a month at whistler, you're saving money and time as all you have to do is line up in the lift to head up and they scan you.

But my question to you is, why do you feel you need a 4x4? do you plan on doing some major expeditions where there isn't any plowed roads?

your car is only as good as the tires you put on them.

But if you really want to consider a 4x4 or all wheel drive vehicle, that's light, fuel efficient, and cheap...consider a Toyota Corolla All-trac wagon. Throw some 175.70.13's on there and you're as good as gold. Even better than most newer cars that need wider tires for stability. You don't need major horsepower or torque in the winter, you just need something you can rely on.

My car is so light, that I've been using 155.80.13 winter tread. pizza cutters got me EVERYWHERE in the winter. Now i just need to tone down my brakes since they will lock up the tires quickly in slippery conditions.

slowride
09-20-2011, 10:54 AM
Well i was looking at 4cyl 4x4's mainly, with the possibilty of a v6 if it was cheap/good condition. Planning to hit interior mountains this year, as well as a trip to revelstoke, so figured a 4x4 with some quality winters on it should do the trick. After my last car, its hard to just hop into any old honda and enjoy driving it lol. Also the added space is good, and i do have a soft spot for wagons...!!

In case people here havent seen the thread in VOT, but Sportchek is having their Friends/Family sale next week 28th/29th, lots of great deals on last years ski/snowboard deals + save additional 10% during friends and family event.

For snowboarders, all stores are getting a selection of older Rossignol/Roxy snowboard and bindings that will be sold at 50% off the regular ticketed price + ADDITIONAL 10% off with your friends and family coupon.

For skiiers, there will be a Rossignol Z72 Ski+Binding Package on sale for $299.99 + ADDITIONAL 10% off with your friends and family coupon, both amazing deals.

There is also plenty of other deals in stores, every location has a slight different inventory, at Richmond we still have last years K2 Revival, Kung Fujas, Obsethed, Salomon Lords etc, so lots of good deals. Currently they are all 20-40% off last year's price, so an additional 10% is a great deal.

We will also get some of this year's stuff in time for the sale as well, which you will save 25% off with the friends and family coupon.

they're alright goggles.

i find that their frames aren't the strongest, and the lens tends to separate from eachother, but that's only because my friends that use them trash their gear like a 5 dollar whore.

Electric goggles are nice.

and so are the new oakleys.

165 is about the average price on goggles, especially convex goggles now a days.

you'll pay more for mirrored finish and pro model frames.

I have a pair of Feenoms in gloss black with the Fire Chrome lens. Fit is iffy, but that's my fault because I bought them online (for $75!) without even considering fit. Yea VZ has cheaper ones under $100. But the ones I was looking for have an oversized type lens, dunno what its really called. But the fit on those are nice and I like them because I can see so much more, left and right etc.

Gonna be rockin whistler this year with the student seasons pass. Anyone else gonna be doin the same?

I'm getting new skis this year at the turkey sale friday. Don't really know what I want. I don't need a park ski (I'm keeping my old Scratch BC's for that), I want a good all around twin tip ski that can handle the moguls and bumps but still take on the powder and not cause me to sink and get bucked off my skis when i'm hittin the pow.

I've done a mediocre amount of looking and I think I want a ski with a center width (don't know the proper name) of about 95-105.

Gonna be picking up a few buyers guides today but anyone else got suggestions?

I guess my skiing level would be necessary... Gotta work on my park and wanna start hitting some bigger drops/cliffs/what have you, there isn't much I wouldn't ski.

Anyone recommend any boots?

Give the Salomon boots a try. I have weird narrow feet and the Salomon Malamutes lock my heel right in. Plus I have a few friends who have put around 150-200 super hard days on them and they're still fine.

Ride boots also fit a bit narrow if I remember correctly. 32's are built for sort of a wider foot person so they may not fit as well.

A pass is good, regardless of the amount of time you spend on the mountain. Not talking about the amount of time you go up to the mountain.

Even if the weather seems to be good in the city, and you make your way up to the hill then you go and spend your money on a day ticket, and find that the weather turns to piss poor rain. you can't get your money back on that day ticket.

you have a seasons? You can go up, ride till you're content and not have to worry about the money spent on a day ticket, because you've essentially paid already.

Just have to figure out which local hill you want to spend your money on for a seasons pass.

As an aside, classifieds moderators have prevented me from listing gear that I have to sell. Which is fine. So if ANYONE is interested, please just send me a private message and I can see what is available :)

it's never too late to get a pass, they sell them year round. However it's too late to get on board an earlybird price.

just work out the price of a pass with tax against the average price of a ticket [evenings weekends and peak] and you'll see how many times you'll ride.

if you think you want to break that amount then by all means buy one!

Grouse always always oversells it's seasons passes, so you'll be super swamped with people during peak periods, seymour always has a long line up on their main chair, so you'll be swamped with people as well during peak periods.

Cypress is expensive, however they have highspeeds to take advantage of the people, yes they do get busy as well, but it's not as bad as grouse or seymour would be, in comparison to the line to lift ratio

Thanks for the recommendation. I wanted to try out the Salomon Synapse alongside the F22, but I couldn't find any down in the states. Also tested DC Dual zone BOA, awesome boot, great articulation. Had just as good heel hold as the salomon, but weren't as comfy as the salomon. Salomon seems to wrap your whole foot snug, while the DC boot allowed my toes and front portion to move around, great boot overall though.

Ended up buying a set of 2012 Salomon F22, hope my purchase doesn't disappoint me once I get some slope time in them.

Where them around the house, a LOT.

the more you spend in the boots, the better they'll fit for the winter.

then you'll know if they will be suitable for you in regards to comfort.

inside the house allows you to also take them back if they aren't any good.

just do everything you can, short of showering in the boots, to make them fit as natural as you need for the winter.

from what you're intending on doing, get two decks.

in all honesty, you'll be happier knowing that one board is dedicated to getting beat the fuk up and the other one is better for taking to big mountains and high speeds.

Shiiiet, I still haven't made a decision for a new board, leaning towards a freestyle/park. Right now the choices are between the Forum Destroyer, Libtech Banana, Capita Green Machine, GNU Pickle or Rome Agent. If anyone has experience with these boards, lets hear about it.

Also, just read about the Bataleon TBT design, I know it's not brand new, but very interested. Might go to a local shop to see if they got demos. Again, experience and opinions?

I rode last years pickle last season so I'll give it a quick review.

I bought the board pretty much on a whim, I knew that Its won a few awards but besides that I didn't know much about it but I was pleasantly surprised.

This thing turned out to be a quiver killer. I went to Japan with 3 boards. A pow board an all mountain board and the pickle. For the Majority of the season the pickle was my go to board. I probably spent around 50 days on the pickle alone. This thing handled some seriously deep pow, had great edge hold and poped just as well as a cambered board. I weigh about 170 so probably 180 all geared up and I rode the 156. Rarely did I ever get stuck and when I did it was because I was going into zones that were probably waist deep and not steep enough. Oh and I ride pretty hard and do a lot of stupid shit and the board still looks mint. Good ol Mervin built.

I've also heard good things about Bataleon boards but I've yet to ride one. Friend of mine had the Rome Agent and he cracked the side wall in about 4 spots. Not the strongest board I guess.

Vangruver
11-02-2011, 07:32 PM
poped just as well as a cambered board.

i can half agree with that statement, only because there are some cambered boards that are the ultimate poop when it comes to pop.

Forum destroyer, two options....regular camber, or double dog [camber and reverse camber hybrid] top of the line forum. best construction best base. Forum's parent company is and in fact burton. So technology is trickled down from burton's decks. Including their materials. However it's labeled as forum's stuff. I will currently ride the destroyer doubledog with shakabra bindings

Sk8 banana. My go to board for the last 4+ years. I have ridden a skate banana since they were first introduced. Now i've gone to forum. however, the upside of the original banana, the solid construction underneath the bindings, which is the point where the board has to have the most snap for ollies. The downside was the OVERALL construction. I've broken 3. The magna traction is cool, and the fact that the tip's and tail' have no edge wrapping makes for a clean looking deck. And now with so many different tech' of banana camber, you have plenty of options.

Park Pickle, same idea as the sk8 banana, however the two major differences are the heal side side cut, as it's deeper than it's toe side. Also known as an assymetrical sidecut to allow your healside turns to be just as strong as your weak toe side carve. Flex pattern is different than the banana, as the board has softer nose and tail flex, but a stiffer waist/mid section. Produced at the same factory as libtech, could really call them the same board in regards to how they react.

Rome Agent. These boards have HEAPS of tech, as they were started by a burton snowboards engineer who either quit, or got fired form burton. Started off semi weak, but is now one of the most solid brands out there, with a killer team. The agent is a solid go to board for a lot of riders that I know of. has solid tech behind the construction and has loads of pop. Makes a great all mountain board for freestyle and park riding. Not overly good for jibbing though.

Bataleon. TBT triple base technology. a few friends i know ride these decks. They like them for the most part. It's a cambered board with raised nose and tail edges, to act like a rocker board, but have camber to provide you with pop. Good idea. just a little off in regards to riding. Good for pow and thick/deep crud though.

and stuff.

can anyone here recommend a soft, noodle-y board for learning to butter? not necessarily for a pure park board, maybe a shade of all mountain, but it has to be twin so i can also learn to ride switch.

reading up online today led me to either a Bataleon Airobic, an Arbor Draft, a Signal Park, an Endeavor Color or a Rome Artifact as possible choices. The board I'll get is not exclusive to these though, if there are better ones suggested out there. I'm also checking out the GNU Carbon Credit as a possible purchase.

thing is, i'm not a park rat, and given this will only be my second year riding, i've only ever stuck to groomers for all of my riding time, most notably Collins and the Upper and Lower Fork up in Cypress. i've read that park boards like these are pretty much mediocre outside the park which is understandable.

so can anyone help? thanks a lot!

PS.
also, mid-priced boards are preferred. I got my current Ride Control on sale for around $179 at sportchek, so i'm hoping i dont shell out $600 for something i use for 3 months in a year. online sites have boards for $399 but those are probably US only. I dont think i've seen a Bataleon Airobic on a canadian website for lower than $450...

Yep! It meets all the criteria you've asked for. I learnt my butters and ollies off of it last season. Definitely a good board for the price! Noodle'y as hell, which makes presses that much easier. Btw, I don't think Snow Evo ships out of the US, but I've ordered many things from there before and did store pick up in Seattle.

well the cart allows for international economy shipping worth $87 so it's allowed. i'll prolly get shafted with taxes and customs shit though... but $255 after everything is still pretty damn good.

ill check out local boardshops to see if they have this...

Vangruver

presses and butters are good learned on a stiffer board, not a super stiff board, but something stiffer than a jib board that's for sure.

take the beating, and learn when it's applicable to press.

reverse camber boards are cheater boards when it comes to presses and butters. Nothing wrong with that, but if you take a regular camber board, or a hybrid camber board and pressed that, it's a lot tougher.

it's really all about balance and where to apply it.

jib boards have no torsional stiffness, so they won't hold an edge worth sh!t. makes high speed edge holding crappy. You'll haul ass in a straight line, but when you want to tip the board on edge, you'll find that it won't even go in the direction you want.

Look at board construction, as there is a few different types of laminating to stiffen the core.

biaxial, triaxial, quadaxial, and a combination of each of those with carbon stringers or carbon sheets tossed into the mix. Carbon is used to increase snap/pop/kinetic springing action.

Another thing to consider is edge detuning. Bevel the base edge of the board to allow the board to be less prone to edge catching, this helps for rails and boxes as well, less susceptible to hang ups and catching.

and then it's all a matter of foot/leg/body pressure. once you know how a board flexes you can butter spin all the way down a hill if you wanna.

Then proper butters can lead to flat ground flips, and compression spins, and eventually you can butter revert spin off of a table. those are fun.

it will be the black mountain side with the focus on fork, and PGS, the run that mates to fork

they've done a LOT of off season ground grooming, so they have a small small base of about 20-30 cm's.

I have a cheap pair but never ended up using it much coz I found it totally washed out the snow and I couldn't see the terrain/dips/contours where I was riding. Are more expensive ones better for this?

Is there anything I should look out for in particular?

you want dragons?

Maybe the rogues?

Contours of the snow is attributed to lens color, not so much the lens shape itself. you can get away with flat lens but for optical clarity you'd want convex for sure.

I've had convex goggs, but i've always resorted back to my flat lens goggs because, i really don't care. but I think this year i might go with the dragon APX's

Anybody recommend a somewhat affordable set of goggles? Like $80 +/- $20?

I have a cheap pair but never ended up using it much coz I found it totally washed out the snow and I couldn't see the terrain/dips/contours where I was riding. Are more expensive ones better for this?

Is there anything I should look out for in particular?

All the stores on 4th are having sales. You might want to go in person to make sure they fit properly

I was looking for night riding goggles so I went this past weekend and tried on a lot of different ones. I ended up buying an oakley crowbar for $83 after tax.

Terrible when I got up there at about 10:30. Foggy as hell and the line up at the chair lift was insane!! Me and a friend left as soon as we saw how bad it was. Me and a group of friends want to learn how to board/ski, which mountain has the best classes/equipment rentals, and when would be the best day to go? Some of us know how to ski, some of us have zero experience, none of us know how to board. None of us have our own gear. Help RS? I got hooked last year, I thought it was fun as hell .. but I sucked. I really want to learn.

It would be cool if we could have a mixed class and be taught skiing or boarding at the same time.

are you CASI certified to teach?

Today was GNAR. the coverage was much better than yesterday, the snow was falling HARD, and it's light and fluffy.

The freezing level has dropped signifigantly and will remain low for a while. With this rain we're seeing in the lower mainland, expect at least 15 cm over night.

you want a good job?

or do you want a machine job?

most places when they say they do a hot wax, it's with a machine that has a heated roller that just applies semi warm wax to your board. I know that the boardroom, and sport check? sport mart does hot wax, but i'm not sure if every tech there will provide a quality that you'd appreciate, as if you'd do it yourself. So it's good to ask the tech staff at any shop you take your board to, how long they've been working on gear for, and what their method is.

There is a thread that I started [look at my started threads] about how to hot wax your snowboard/skis. dig it up and read it, bump it up if you want to as well. It's a worthwhile read.

the absolute BEST place to get a hot wax done is at Vancouver Ski and Board services.

However, that being said. You can invest aprox 100+ on an iron, some plastic scrapers, a metal scraper [for base repair] some pads for polishing a base after waxing, and some ptex and go to town with your snowboards/skis

Annually, I invite about 5-10 of my snowboard crew over to my place to have a wax party. just another excuse to have people over, drink beers, bullshit about the season, and watch videos.

something to think about :)

Hey guys I've been boarding for 3 seasons now and I'm finally in the market for a snowboard set.
I'm 5'6 145lbs shoe size 8.5. So, as suggested by a couple calculators, I'll need a board ~150cm high.
Not looking for anything fancy. But a good quality brand is preferable. maybe under $200 for the whole set?
Not picky on freestyle/free ride. Just want a good basic board so I can stop renting.

I've always preferred standard lacing but thats just me. It's getting harder and harder to find boots with standard laces though.

skiiipi
11-21-2011, 06:46 PM
Traditional is best to go as you can customize your lace pattern, introduce zone lacing, reduce or enhance stiffness of the boot, and also modify your ankle hold based on how you lace it.

This is obviously at a higher level, but large amount of pro-riders still use traditional lacing.

My boots use standard laces. I was just never interested in the speed lacing technologies. Never even bothered to look at BOAs and such. Besides if the laces snap (and they look like they're about to...) they're probably cheaper to replace than BOA cables.

When I used to snowboard I think I had that internally ankle support thing where you just reefed on it to secure your ankle within the boot then did the traditional laces up on top of it. I was never a fan of having a bulge down on top of your toe or increased "sensitivety" for turning and the same goes for gas pedals, wasn't a fan.

It is more of an entry level board
Not going to be as stiff or as responsive as say a burton custom
However it is a great learning board
It has minimal rocker with a mostly flat profile, it is not a "deep pow" board.

Overall it is a fantastic deal for $160

Nice work! There's no better feeling than getting something for a good price! Any snowsport you partake in can provide you a great thrill even if its not on the best gear. Fact remains, not every pro rider will opt for the top level snowboard or ski for their uses. They generally choose whatsbest suited for the terrain they're riding!

Let us know how that snowboard performs, the best way you can.

Why do they run the big tracked machines on mountains that arn't yet open making it all bumpy and choppy?

Why do they run the big tracked machines on mountains that arn't yet open making it all bumpy and choppy?

they are called groomers. and their intention is to level the surface of the snow and to aerate it to become more moisture induced. With more moisture within the snow, the snow will then create more of a hard pack base on it.

those groomers seem like big heavy machines, but truthfully they exert such little pressure onto the snow due to their big tracks that sometimes they are rendered unable at times.

you make the call.

cypress has more terrain, more parking, more lifts.

but it also has more idiots, more idiots, and more idiots.
I'm amused by this comment. but I'd like to know how people act like "idiots" on the mountain. maybe throw some "rules of conduct" out there so ppl can follow along.

The only idiots I have ever seen on the mountain are the groups that sit in a line on a run and those people are on every mountain.

today i just found out that a 15K rated jacket cant stand up to a vancouver rainfall... spent 2 hours on Cypress and was soaked to the base layer after the 3rd chairlift up, even when wrapped with a plastic poncho, which is strange since water didnt penetrate my 8K rated pants....

well, time to invest in a Gore-Tex jacket....

nothing, short of rubber, will stop water from eventually penetrating. Even Gore-tex. It just takes longer to get through some materials than others.

The water resistance will fade over time if its an older jacket. You may need to wash and 'refresh' the water resistant coating on your jacket. Especially if its something you wear often. There is special soaps/cleaners to use. Comor sells them, other places should carry them as well.

I skied for 11 years when I was younger. Boarded for about 4 years recently but Im really thinking about giving skiing a go again.

I'm amused by this comment. but I'd like to know how people act like "idiots" on the mountain. maybe throw some "rules of conduct" out there so ppl can follow along.

you want to know the details?

okay. lets begin.

people that haven't the skill or ability to get on or off the chairlift.

people that haven't the skill or ability to make connecting turns, yet will blaze past you on a run with no coherent ability to stop. Ultimately taking down innocent bystanders. Seen it happen, had it happen to me actually.

[it's been said before] people that stop in a row, crossing a run waiting for their friends. It's completely understandable that if someone is hurt they have the right of way to be where they are. Someone can come assist, as injured people shouldn't be moved. Pull over to the side of a run, or if there's a sign in the middle of the run, pull behind or around it. Make it easier for others to get around you.

people that don't look before they leap, that can be said about jumps, cliffs, even little rolling hills.

people that don't stop to help others when someone IS in fact injured. My accident for example.....I fell hard. Hard enough not to be moved. not one person stopped till my gf stopped someone personally. I was sitting in agony for 5+ minutes watching people slide by.

people with no park etiquette. Call your drops, ensure that the landing has been cleared before you go ahead and drop into a jump/box/rail. Unless you're timing it with someone else, you should never drop right after another person.

people that don't look up and behind them. Yes it's the person behind's fault when a collision occurs, but fact of the matter is, when someone is making their own way down a run minding their own business, try your best not to get into their way. It's happened to me before. Where I was both parties. I'm not ashamed to admit I was at fault.

simple common sense can be had, just to ensure that people everywhere can have a good time.

just sayin.

I am willing to bet money the people that dont look out for others or have any etiquette are also the same people who bike around as if the rules of the road dont apply to them.

you're NEVER going to find the conditions like big white or whistler, for the simple reason that the elevation of either mountain compared to cypress is totally different.

unless the freezing level stays at 1-200 meters at all times, the north shore mountains will always have cyclical conditions.

Nice sunny day like today? it' going to be soft and fun till the night falls, then when it gets dark, boom, out comes the hard pack of death.

Lets face it, you got spoiled with big white and whistler. and now you're coming back to local hills that have weather change every hour. Face the facts, unless you're willing to dedicate your season to big resort like hills, be happy with the north shore mountains.

very true! from the first day of learning snowboarding i was treated to whistler conditions. I tried cypress a few times and that actually made me decide to quit snowboarding after i bailed real hard and dislocated my elbow. it is not till someone took me to whistler and big white that i decided to go boarding again.
guess i have to make an effort to travel to enjoy boarding or wait till it snows hard in cypress then its fresh pow.

But i am curious, im sure most of you guys have been to whistler/big white and cypress before. so does that mean when you decide to go to cypress it is because of the convenience, distance, and the mindset of "yea it'll do" rather than because you actually like the mountain?
