29 Mentally Challenged Adults are to be fired by Dec.

Community Living slashes jobs for mentally challenged adults

So let me get this straight...they are firing these 29 people, taking the $300,000 they "saved" to hire a company to find them "real" jobs?

I thought this was a "real" job, no?

I love how we spend so much money on programs and safe injection sites for crackheads, etc...But for those, who through no fault of their own, are trying their best to contribute society, we cut funding (or reallocate) and fire.

I'm confused.

This Theisen chick seems like a tit.

Wow. That absolutely sucks.

Physically and mentally challenged people are, by far, some of the most honest, hard working and appreciative people I've ever worked with. This is disgusting.

It really is just sad and depressing.

I don't understand what the justification is?! It is not like they don't have the funds...the gov't didn't cut the program...the recycling depot isn't closing or losing money...they just want to give it to someone else!

fuuuuck, I find stories like this so frustrating!

I used to work for a program called PWIP (Partners for Workplace Inclusion Program) that placed people who had had traumatic injuries back in the work force or helped people with disabilities find employment. I'm sad to tell you that shit like this happens ALL THE TIME.

And with budget cuts increasing in all private sector areas, they'll only get worse. Up until now the cities have been some of the best places for persons with various disabilities to work because they can afford to make some of the accomidations themselves (though programs like PWIP and CCRW would often pay for these out of their operating budgets for private companies). But now with the current economy they just can't afford to support these programs on an on going basis any more.

Even sadder still, programs like PWIP and CCRW are being reduced or cut completely as well, at the same time as community health programs are being scaled back giving people with various disabilities fewer and fewer support systems to turn to.

Agreed.
Having personally knowing a mentally handicapped person, they are legitimately honest and hard working people who are just trying to fit into society, communicate, and make it by day by day. Sure, most of us joke around and probably say "you retarded or what?" but at the end of the day, I'm sure most of us don't legitimately mean it. Faggots that give mentally challenged people a hard time are the fucking scum bags who need to look in the mirror. They don't realize that even though they might be handicapped, the majority of them can UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE SAYING AND PROCESS IT - regardless of how slow they might react. Whether or not they respond to it or show it, it really damages them emotionally.

they're not cutting the funding. they're just paying some new company money to find these people jobs? It seems like some political bullshit if you ask me. Someone owes someone a favour an they're giving them this contract.

Dude, read the article or watch the vid.

They are not cutting the funding...they are reallocating it and hiring a company to MAYBE find them a "real" job.

But here is what really is going to happen:

They fire all 29 of them. Attempt to find them a job somewhere else. This fails. Ministry of Housing or whatever other Ministry is supplementing their income, needs to give them more. This is where it effect us.

I have seen a little bit of this first-hand. I have a tenant in one of my buildings that is mentally challenged. His rent is about $750/month. Ministry of Housing gives him $356/month towards rent and he works to pay the rest in a job that is not unlike these 29. If he were to lose his job, the Ministry would need to aid him more. Although he may be able to obtain employment somewhere else, lets face it, it is not as easy as someone without physical or mental challenged to do.

Now I get that that is real convoluted way of looking at it, and at the end of the day it really just sucks for those that are being fired because often jobs like this give those people a sense of pride and that in some way they are contributing member of society.

The whole situation just doesn't make much sense, and I think there is more to this story...

i feel like calling someone retarded doesn't mean you are implying they are mentally challenged. my intention is too call you an idiot or something along the same lines. it's hard to explain what i mean :S

same thing would apply if i said "faggot". i guess i'll let this joe rogan video explain it haha

^^The negative connotation associated with the word faggot stems from a hatred of gay people, period. Using it as a negative word, whether it is your intention to insult someone for their sexual preference or not, perpetuates and fuels the negative connotation. It's not hard to find another word to use, one that lacks a second definition that insults people for no legitimate reason. Especially considering the vast majority of the world continues to jeer at homosexuals with that very word.

I'm physically disabled and finding jobs is much more difficult than it was before I was injured, I can't imagine how difficult it would be for someone with a mental handicap. Good luck to these people, when people without handicaps complain about how tough life is, they should remind themselves how fortunate they are to be entirely mentally and physically capable.

Update: The program has been extended for another year

Quote:
A program that employs people with development disabilities at the recycling depot was re-instated after local pressure mounted to keep it in place.

The $270,000 for the program has been fully restored and the 29 people who benefited from it can keep working at the Ridge Meadows Recycling Depot.

Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton said there's been a lot of "justifiable anger" over the cancellation of the program.

"It wasn't handled well," he said. "It was very insensitive."

The program, which is run by the Crown corporation, Community Living BC, has been ongoing for 20 years with annual renewal.

Dalton said the Minister of Social Development Harry Bloy has asked CLBC to apologize for how the situation was handled.

The recycling society found out about a month ago that the program was being discontinued.

After media attention last week and pressure from the community, they were told by CLBC that the contract would be extended to the end of the year, but at that point there were no plans to reverse the decision.

CLBC has stated they want to get "real work for real pay" for the developmentally challenged people working at the depot.

Dalton said when he went to the recycling depot, he saw the employees working diligently at their jobs.

"In many ways [people with developmental disabilities] are more reliable at that wage," Dalton said.

Carol Kleckner's daughter Stephanie is working at the recycling depot and is one of the people with developmental disabilities who would have no longer have been employed.

In addition, Stephanie had to leave Bramble Cottage - a group home for developmentally disabled people in Maple Ridge - last year when it was shut down by the Association of Community Living. The prospect of losing her job at the recycling depot was another crushing blow.

Her daughter and her co-workers were "extremely upset" when they heard they could no longer work at the recycling depot, Kleckner said, as they enjoy their jobs and have been working together for many years.

"They're a community... she's distraught," Kleckner said.

With the position of volunteer coordinator for developmentally disabled people being cut by CLBC and other cuts happening, Stephanie's mother is at a loss as to what is happening.

"What are they doing to these poor people?" she said.

In addition to Dalton being involved to reverse CLBC's decision to cancel the program, Maple Ridge council expressed its dismay at the cancellation and was came out strongly advocating to keep the program going.

Funding for the employment program is allocated year by year, but Dalton said he believes it won't be cancelled next year and the "fairly unique" program should continue into the future.

A family member works for Community Living and it was shocking to learn how much is spent servicing such a small segment of our society. I know morally its the right thing to do, yet wow the numbers are staggering.

A staff of 10, a house and a vehicle are required house and care for 4 handicap people, cause their handicaps are so severe that their families are incapable or unwilling to take care of them. Then factor in medical and they are spending ~$250K/yr per handicap person.

I understand why they are looking some places to save costs, cause some of their other costs are so high. They are trying to cut the costs of those most capable of taking care of themselves so they have money for the more severe cases.

No one doubts that this shit ain't cheap. Here's the problem though...ok, cancel it all and the family needs to step up.

Mom quits her job to devote herself back to full-time care of a child...and goes on assistance as a result. Plus, the child is on assistance-and let's put them in BC Housing because now they don't make much money.

Or, we can have them sort through some recycling that whether you agree or not about its benefits for the planet, in some way contributes and let them be productive.

A girl I worked with had a brother with rather severe autism, and died of complications from it in his 30's. He was functional, but not contributable if that makes sense.

Her parents were doing well, had a nice house and such, but their entire lives were re-arranged around one child. Can you imagine living with just that hint in your life of resentment that it never ends? These people need and deserve support, because its not one life affected, its 3-5 immediate members of that family plus more.
