The multi-cultural diversity?
The amazing natural beauty that surrounds us?
The Canucks, our consistently league leading NHL team?
The deep and unique cultural history?
The temperate climate that give us a distinct mix of different seasons?

i love that i can live in a place where people see other races and think nothing of it because it's so common.

^^^ Vancouverites (espeically immigrants) that have never lived outside of this city don't know how good they've got it here. Go to Calgary or Edmonton and you're sure to run into some pretty racist and narrow-mined people that are not shy to tell you what they think of you right in your face.

Wait. Our what?

The Haida, Musqueam and Coast Salish have lived here for thousands of years and have a distinctly unique culture when compared to European Christian and Asian societies. I'm not saying our history has the same depth as Europe or Asia, since first nations people left behind far less art, architecture and literature due to the intrinsically minimal nature of their cultures. The stories, traditions and languages that have survived are definitely unique and beautiful, however. Of course I might be biased in that opinion, since I have first nations ancestry.

As far as cultural history goes. I'm sorry but there really isn't an obvious one. Vancouver is such a new city (compared to other major North American cities) that there just isn't enough "history" behind it for people to identify themselves to. You want a city with history? Go to Montreal, New York, Boston, Chicago... now those have real big-city history and cultural background. European cities are even more "cultured", just as you mentioned...

Also, don't take this the wrong way, but I doubt many of us can identify with the first nations' unique cultural background. There isn't enough influences in art, literature, and architecture (as you said) to shape the uniqueness that defines Vancouver. For so long the BC government has been trying to push that as what's unique about Vancouver, but most people I know don't really see things the same way and do not relate or identify to them directly. When you say "Vancouver", people don't think about the first nations people and their heritage, they instead think about the mountains, lakes, open areas, and the weather - those define our city's culture and uniqueness.

I am sure the traditions, stories, and language are beautiful, but in a city with so many other races and people from different cultures, that ONE culture just seems to get lost among them even if it's been here for hundreds or thousands of years. If not for the government's effort in pushing that (first nations culture) as our identity, we may not even notice too much of it around our everyday lives. Kind of sad, yes, but that is the reality.

1)20 minutes + a car = millions of cool places to go.

There's been nights where me and friends are bored/everyones pretty faded and wants to do something but don't wanna go clubbing/to a restaurant ... grab the car and cruise upto cypress lookout/kits beach, just hangout and shoot the shit for a few hours with a sick backdrop.

2)weed's illegal but no one really cares.

3) most people aren't ugly. I think out of all my friends, only 1 or 2 of them don't go to the gym regularly. I've been to toronto, and man there's a lot of ugly people.

Very true and excellent points, as I said, I have first nations ancestry and therefore I have been exposed to first nations culture much more than the average British Columbian. A trip to the museum of anthropology at UBC or the Bill Reid gallery are great ways to spend a rainy fall weekend and connect with the sparse history of our city if you enjoy art.

I agree, our cities history cannot compare to the majority of large cities worldwide, Vancouver has only really begun to blossom in the last century, which has been relatively uneventful in North America.

I also have to agree with those that say that Vancouverties are generally speaking quite attractive-looking in mass... I haven't traveled a lot in North America, but compared to people from Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, New York, and LA, we do have a large collection of good-looking people, and the rest of us aren't too bad either lol

The cleanliness.

The variety of activities available to do. Do you wonder why it's hard for Vancouver to support multiple pro sport teams? Because every season, you can always do a variety of outdoor activities that is close to the city.

You wonder why Greenbay can support an NFL team ? Because they got nothing to do there.

you dont have to go nearly that far. get to about merritt and you can experience those things.

on another note, i have to say vancouver has a fuckload of hot chicks.
drive down anywhere on the west side or downtown and they are all over the place.

i like how most people enjoy the outdoors other than old chinese women who hide from the sunlight like vampires.

I didn't appreciate this until I worked in London. The hot chicks in there that I noticed are the tourists from South America and the women that migrated from Eastern Europe and Italy. As for the locals, I was hoping a lot of Cheryl Coles, I was wrong.

The weather and the scenery. I love the fact that in the lower mainland it rarely snows, summers are usually great and even fall and winter are very mild compared to the prairies where I was born. I also love how it stays mostly green here all year round again compared to everything being brown, yellow and dead even in the summer.

Sushi (Japanese food) in Vancouver is a LOT better than most places in the world, both in terms of price and quality (of the actual seafood). You just gotta pick your restaurants--but there are plenty of them around here to choose from.

Now ramen on the other hand...I think is somewhat debatable
