the new engine is pretty cool, the exhaust manifold is inside the vee and it has no throttle bodies

http://www.bmwse.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/c86eb_4c59d569-849b-84b0.jpg

What most folks have not realized so far are the extensive modifications BMW has made to the F10 M5 engine. We point those out for you below, referencing BMW’s released info. Compared to the S85 engine of the E60 M5, BMW claims that “VALVETRONIC has also sharpened the responsiveness of this engine [S63Tü].

Here are the highlights of the new M5’s S63Tu engine and how it’s different from the S63 engine used for the X5 M and X6 M.

Two more innovations of the S63Tü:

- Innovative solenoid valve injectors in the new BMW M5 engine use multiple injections to achieve an extremely precise mixture preparation.

- VALVETRONIC
This is the biggest difference. As BMW puts it:

“Throughout each of its four previous generations, the heart of the BMW M5 has been its high-revving, high output-per-liter engine fed by individual throttle plates.

The new M5 engine introduces VALVETRONIC variable valve control system for the first time on a BMW M engine – effectively providing 16 individual throttles.

VALVETRONIC is BMW’s patented fully variable valve control system that eliminates the need for conventional throttles. Engine power is instead controlled directly by varying the amount of lift of the intake valves. Throttle losses in the gas cycle are minimized with this system, which has a positive impact on both the efficiency and torque. VALVETRONIC has also sharpened the responsiveness of this engine compared to the V10 engine it replaces.”

bmw training on explaining valve tronic was kinda cool.

instead of a set lifter, the lifter is on cog arc, so depending at where it is on that arc, depends how long and how high the valve is lifted.

Best looking M5 since the E39. I've hated the look of every single M5 since then. M5's should be about understated power, not over the top, in your face crap. That's what the M3 is for.

Now if only they'd get rid of that stupid front fender vent...

I don't care if this has more power and has a more usable powerband. I'd still rather get a screaming V10 with a 8250 rpm redline. RIP S85 :alone:

meh... the v10s cool at first but then you start missing low end torque. put a high revving motor in the m3, and give the m5/6 a grunty v8 and we're set. the v10 with an exhaust does sound great though.

Less efficient than air/air intercoolers. Air/water intercoolers by themselves are far more efficient than air/air intercoolers could ever be. But air/water intercoolers are part of a closed system, and this system will have lower overall efficiency than a pure air/air intercooler would.

stunning nonetheless

I think the main reason they used air/water is mainly for packaging. It makes the engines very modular.

Long gone are the days of NA motors. When you factor in the emissions and fuel ecconomy they they have to achieve with horse power forced induction is the only way to go.

I'm not sure I agree. The air in the intercooler gets quite a bit hotter than the temperature of the engine coolant. Since air/water is several hundred times more efficient than air/air, the water doesn't have to be much cooler than the air in order to remain more efficient than an air/air system.

FYI Ford has an air/water intercooler in the 6.7L diesel, and I've bought used ex-Nascar air/water coolers off ebay, and that's for non-turbo engines that don't even get as hot at turbo'd engine.

Clearly it must be a superior system otherwise there is no way Ford would spend the money to implement it, especially without advertising it they they do with direction injection, for example.

Don't want to jack this thread, so perhaps we could start a new thread to discuss this specific issue - I'm sure some turbo guys would be interested.

drove a new e-class in europe with it, and there is a slight pause but nothing too noticeable. it literally cranks for a split second and you're off.

all the new fancy items add weight to the car
end up with bigger engine, burning even more fuel, more parts can go wrong, higher repair bills
