: Protection Pkg and Alarm system from Honda Dealer

I've just purchased a 2011 CR-V from Vancouver Honda and will be picking it up on Wednesday.

They offered the protection pkg (underbody rust protection and some sort of coating over the car to protect it from bird poo) and an alarm system for $1100.

I've talked to a friend and he said Honda doesn't really do a good job on it. He said I could do it myself. But I didn't have a chance to ask him where I could go to if I want someone to do it for me.

Is there anywhere you guys would suggest to get the above done?

Not sure about alarm system. But don't bother with protection package.... They send it out to a third party who charges them 200-$250....

I can see if our guy can do a pro pack at cost for you if you really want one.

You can get an aftermarket alarm installed with a 2 way pager for about 400 which is a major upgrade from the factory alarm(imo useless since no one really cares when an alarm is going off anyway) and I believe most cars come with a standard 10 year underbody rust protection in the first place

Seriously, just go to one of the sponsors and get an auto start alarm and skip the dealer markup.

Undercoating and paint protection is huge rip-off from the dealer.
The business office tries to sell it to you since they get commision off of it.
If you really want the paint sealant, do it yourself. Goes on by hand like a wax. Just give the car a good wash and clay before you put it on.

Is there anyone that can point me to a good place to get the protection pkg?

I'll call the guy the does it for us tomorrow if you pm me and remind me. Its really not that great even at $250.... its basically wipe on wax, leather/fabric/carpet spray stuff, and the undercoat.
I'm guessing the bus manager said it would make you car hold its value better? Just take car of your car.

For the protection crap: Just get it done Bashir Auto Comestic...that's where most OpenRoad dealership send their cars to. (while charging their customer an arm and leg)

look into the undercoating yourself as it is a fraction of the cost to what dealers charge

does Diamond Kote (or something like that) still exist? They did my 1992 Celica years ago according to some old papers I found, and it's still completely rust free.

I'll probably get in trouble if I release this trade secret, but how it works is If they're busy, they'll just send it out to those shops for $200-300, yet you paid 8-900 for it. If they're not busy, they'll let their promoted lot boy who's now a "detailer specialist" do it in-house which is even more of a scam. Even the specialist boys think it's a scam, and I'm sure you could so a better job yourself. Everyones got to eat~

I'm the service "lot boy" at a dealership and do the protection packages. Went through all the proper training......biggest fucking scam buying through the business office. It only pays 2.2hrs, plus supplies which is minimal so easily under 300. Don't bother with the paint, it's just an expensive wax. Might as well take the actual time to take care of your car and wax it regularly. No matter where you get it undercoated, take the time and look for any overspray. Fucking hate it when I see cars with overspray. I'm really meticulous when it comes to getting this done right when I do it.

That shit is awesome then. 19 years, 310,000kms, spent its early years in Saskatchewan before being owned by rednecks at some point (unsure where) and then making it out to me in BC, and the only tiny bits of rust stain starting to show up are near the top of the car, and at the top of one front fender.

I wonder if they'd be interested in seeing it at all, since they're still around I think I'll get my new car done, and get my parents to have their G35 done.

We install alarms for a couple Honda Dealerships.

THey basically pay us to put the cheapest alarm in possible. It's not OEM.

We could do a Compustar 2way Paging alarm and remote start + undercoat your car for you for WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY under that.

When you guys say "the dealership has offered me an alarm system" - what exactly does that mean?

I have a Honda Pilot, and it comes with a "remote keyless entry". I press the button on my key and it locks/unlocks the doors. There's a red light that blinks when the doors are locked. Sometimes if I screw up the unlocking procedure (not exactly sure what i did differently), the car horn will honk.

I assume that is the factory alarm - so why would Honda ask if you want an alarm system for $1100?

Our dealer doesn't have the lot guys do the protection packages.
I know a few dealers do it in house but its by 1 guy with his own bay and all he does is protection stuff.

Yeah honestly, those alarms the dealers put in are the worst alarms ever. Like Cman said, they're the cheapest alarms i'v ever seen. We charge $499.
I think you can get a compustar 2way for less then that these days.

if you aren't familiar with these things, the only two i'd get from a dealership are undercoat and rust protection. essentially everything they offer, you can purchase and do yourself. it's just a matter of whether or not you're comfortable doing it (or learning how to) by yourself.

i actually have the same paint sealant that Honda uses on their new vehicles :smug: :D

as for the alarm system, it's not really something i'd buy for a brand new car. 2007+ cars all have a standard immobilizer installed and you've already got power door locks too. if you really want piece of mind, I'd recommend you have a Compustar 2-way alarm installed by a local shop (like Sounds Good :)). when i worked at Honda, they charged a customer (also with a new cr-v) something stupid like $1100 for the alarm and it was a knock off of Compustar. the 2-way remote looked HORRIBLE.
