vacation time is (usually) pro-rated.
since you only stayed for half a year, it would make sense that you would only get half your vacation time allowed.
I removed my fail because some people just don't know about this...they assume that they will get all 3 weeks (or 2 weeks) of vacation even if they only work 4 months at a job.

I don't think anyone really got what you said in your post. I wrote a more literal translation to help:
Hey guys...so I had this job, and they did me the solid of paying out my vacation time on this leave of absence I took, assuming that I'd continue to work for them. I decided to fuck them by quitting after they waited for me to come back, and now they have the balls to ask to be made whole on the vacation money that I took.
Do I have to pay these bastards back, or is there a way I can rip them off and never look back?
Oh ps, I don't ever intend on getting another job ever, so creating a bad name for myself and burning bridges is of no consequence.
I made my answer quite literal too. Fuck off and pay them the money you owe.
With love,
An employer.

This is the problem. You think because they made a mistake and overpaid you, you think that's their fault?
You're essentially stealing from them. Keeping the money is very unethical.
Do your self a solid and pay them back what you owe. Now if you work out that they made a mistake in what you owe them.
ie. they say you owe $500, but in fact you only owe them $400 then talk to them about that.
But, if they're right just pay them. Why would you think any different?

Thanks for the answers everyone, I thought so as well but a few friends told me that they can't do anything about the over-payment and it's up to you to pay them back or not. And hey, having an extra 5k-6k is better than not having an extra 5k-6k. So don't hate.

can your ex-employer not take you to court and provide proof that they overpaid and it was a mistake? I mean, it's similar to as if a bank clerk accidentally deposits money into my bank account the bank can actually take those money back ...

Yuuuuuuuuuuuuup. If it was only a few hundred they probably wouldn't bother but if it's 5-6K like buddy says there is a decent chance they will if not paid back.

If the six months of vacation pay they paid you in advance totals $5-6k, you were making $300,000 a year at your former position

I honestly don't think anyone hates you in this thread for having an extra measly $5k-6k you're stealing from your former employer, it's more the fact that you're a sad dishonest human being. Would love to know what your name so I know never to hire you in the future.

$5-6K?
WTF, you be balling bro.
Now I can understand why you wouldn't want to give that much back.. Hopefully, you didn't spend it all...
