HP TouchPad? :fuckthatshit:

Amazon Kindle Fire tablet unveiled: Android-based, 7-inch display, $199 price tag -- Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/28/amazon-fire-tablet-unveiled-7-inch-display-199-price-tag/)

As for what is subsidizing this, they want you to subscribe to their service after the 30 day trial

Looks like the Playbook, but more interesting. Now to see what the actual specs are, for the dual-core chip, ram and how much storage it has.

If the fire has an nvidia chip, which I doubt at that price, it would be a pretty awesome little tablet.

They'll sell a ton of these. Like Apple, Amazon has got the name people recognize and more importantly the storefront to supply content.

Going to be tough for other tablet makers to go up against these two.

i've been waiting for this.

on RFD ppl were commenting that there may be a problem b/c their services are only available to US customers (unless you have a US address & US credit card available)

anyone know if there services are available to canadian comsumers?

Screen is IPS, amazing

dual core too. Even if it's just a Qualcomm it'll be good, for $200.. crazy

Update 3: Amazon Kindle Fire impressions (video) -- Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/28/amazon-kindle-fire-impressions/)

"The reports we'd heard of the Kindle Fire being very similar to the BlackBerry PlayBook, and you can certainly put any doubt you had about that to rest. As expected, the thing is very clearly related to RIM's hardware, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. We liked the way the PlayBook feels in the hand, and while we only briefly had the opportunity to touch a Kindle Fire, it gives off the same quality impression."

I'd prefer if it had a front facing camera though.

Has anyone seen demos of what other apps running on this look like? So far almost everything has concentrated on the Amazon apps, I want to see what they've left of Android.

It's an ebook reader/multimedia device. It's not meant to communicate. But since it's running Android 2.1 or 2.3 then you can damn well expect CyanogenMod to be on there soon. Should be available faster than the touchpad version.

Although the only benefits I see over the Nook colour are the Dual Core and Gorilla Glass. Plus the Nook has expandable storage.

512MB of ram too?

Jesus this is all like, too good to be true for $200

is this a lot different from the nook color (other than its specs, but the NC wasn't too shabby at all)? i sold mine in a week... even after i rooted it and played with a bunch of stuff in applanet

NC specs are OK, but the CPU is a single core OMAP 3 while the KF has a dual core OMAP 4.

It depends on why you sold your nook.

i found my friend's nook laggy when flipping through a PDF comic, and when scrolling when browsing. if the fire is lag free, and if I'm able to access their Prime services while still be in canada, i'd want to get this. so far it seems prime is unavailable for canadians.

the size and weight of the nook was perfect for carrying around with you and holding in your hand. the ipad's screen was great b/c it's nice and big, but i wouldnt want to carry that thing around with me when i go out.

was reading the comments from that amazon link

anyone have experience with the china-made tablet Meiying M11?

i got rid of it mainly because of its size. either a user has to buy magazine or book content made for a tablet (do they make android tablet editions?), or when i read the tons of pdfs i have of books/mags i have to pinch and zoom every time. as for pdf performance, i found that different programs performed quite differently, especially the time it took to render when zooming in and out... so try a different program.

i guess $200 for a 10" tablet won't happen for a while, not counting the touchpad haha

the nook was sitting on my coffee table after the first 2 days ... do you guys read books and watch movies on the tabets?

^ where she get it?

I think she bought it from Amazon and shipped through this website (http://www.comgateway.com)

Took me awhile to figure out how to download apps from the appstore. I needed a fake US address, fake number, and FAKE US credit card number (https://www.paypalobjects.com/en_US/vhelp/paypalmanager_help/credit_card_numbers.htm), just to download FREE apps.

I also can't use the Amazon cloud service, since it's US only and I can't seem to get a US proxy to work with it.

What I'm still stumped about is why it didn't come with a USB cable to connect to my PC?

^ root it and put cm on it or something. sucks that you basically have to commit identify and credit card fraud just to use something you've brought.

Planning to root to use the android market, but I need to pick up a micro-b usb cable first

I have many cables lying around, but this is not one of them

If only it had expandable memory. That's the only thing that's limiting it.

So if i do get one of these. What are the limitations being in canada?

you don't get cloud service, you don't get to download any apps from amazon app store unless you do credit/ identify fraud, you don't get the amazon prime service which lets you stream amazon's library of songs books and movie. There might also be warranty issue.

software side you can get around all the limitation listed by rooting it and putting in stock android.

imo i think the amazon prime service is great i would definately give it a try, like most online media solution us canadian once again get the short end of the stick....

Thinking of getting this for light note taking/multimedia tablet, but with the limited storage, I might hold off.

For anyone who has a hold of this, is the reading experience any different? People say you can't read on NON e-ink displays for hours, but we do this all the time when we face our computer screens daily. :fuckthatshit:

Question: Should i get it and root this? read off this thing ? Or am i just better off sticking with the Kindle touch E-ink reader? The price point between the two really gets me. I can always return my Kindle Touch

when i was looking for a tablet i was thinking of getting either this or the playbook since they are the same price. i went with a playbook b/c of lack of amazon services to canada on the fire, and the playbook has bt, micro usb & hdmi ports, double the hd space, front/rear facing camera and a mic.
unless you must have android or are going to live in the US i'd go for a pb.

I appear to be the only one with a fire on this forum. :alone:

I haven't used other kindles before, but I don't see why I can't read on this for hours. Hell, I've read on my iphone for hours.

I'm taking this on vacation next week but the 8gb (6gb of free storage to be exact) is really limiting my choice of travel entertainment. It's great just for books and magazines and a couple of games, but without cloud or streaming, this thing fills up fast with just a few movies.

Currently I'm rooted and have access to android and other markets. But when the custom roms are stable enough for me to use, I'll probably switch to it, since the amazon services are useless to us anyways.

BUT, for the price, it's still a decent android tablet, if you're willing to accept (or work around) it's flaws.

may have found a fix to all the flaw! but another tablet! LOL

from RFD, looks pretty decent for a tablet. For the Specs vs price perspective.
