Shaw BroadBand 50

The Shaw Broadband 50.
Who's using it? If you're using it, any thoughts or reviews regarding the speed?
I recently switched over to Shaw Broadband 50, but checking it on speedtest I learned that I only gained 4 or so mbps. So not much of an increase.
Perhaps it is only me, but I want to know opinions of others.

Speedtest.netisn't great anymore.
I have Broadband 100. Works great, especially when the download source has high capacity or supports multiple connections. Consistently can download at 11.8MB/sec which is about 100mbps - as advertised. Can barely pull 60mbps off speedtest.net or shaw.ca/speedtest

lol personally i think it's absolutely no difference from shaw xtreme.. i was on shaw warp for a while with the same 50mbps download/2.5mb upload.. i had no lag issue playing games while having torrent or video streaming elsewhere in the house.. and getting pretty constantly 40+mbps on speedtest.. now that i switched over to broadband 50.. with the supposively same speed rating.. i lag when doing the same thing as i was before.. and maybe gotten 50mbps on some speedtest site on the first day? ever since it's somewhere between 15-20 with absolutely nothing running.. false advertisement? or just shitty infrastructure that can't handle all the customers upgrading to newer speed? only thing i can't complain about is the monthly limit. BTW that netgear pos gateway is terrible.. i hope they have a new one by now.. they prolly do.. but i ain't waiting 5hrs on the phone to talk to someone to get one.

False advertisement.
Telus advertises 15 mbps
I always get 15 lol
constant all day at that 2
I have Broadband 50 and so far I'm pretty happy with it. Speeds have been pretty consistent for me; Usually I get around 46-48mbps on speed tests, but once in a long while i might get just under 40mbps during busy evenings. With regards to download speeds, I usually get 4-5 MB/s on Steam. Bittorent is all over the place cause of seed quality, but highest I've hit was 5.5MB/s.
Compared to Shaw Xtreme, I don't notice any difference when surfing sites. Its mostly just the extra speed when downloading large files. Also the 400GB a month cap is a lot better than Xtreme's 125GB

I'm pretty certain that the more TV's you have running in the house the slower the internet speed will be because it uses the same connection/speed for the tv, phone, internet...someone correct me if im wrong....been thinking of switching but dont want to pay an extra $25 for the channel packages when i only really want like 5 channels extra (sportsnet, tsn, CNN, spike, discovery, speed,)

that only happens to telus i think, every HD box u have on takes about 5MB of ur internet speed because everything is through 1 optic cable
with shaw i think the phone and tv lines are separate from the internet line.

Alot of misinformation in this thread.
First of all, your broadband connection does not degrade as more nodes/frequency are used in your household; such as, turning on a TV. This is cable, not ADSL.
Second, those of you who are on Broadband 50 and higher. I am assuming that you are using a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, the SMC or Motorola modems supplied by Shaw. You should be getting near your rated broadband speed, regardless of ANYTIME of the day. Provided that you are connecting directly to the modem, and not a router/switch, as the older devices can degrade the quality of your connection. The older "G" and "N" routers (like Linksys WRT54GL, WRT54G, etc.) cannot handle anything more than 35Mbps throughput, so if your bottlenecking around this speed on a Broadband 50 or higher package. It's your router!
Speed should be consistent and never degrade at any time of the day, unless they are performing upgrades/maintenance in your area. With the recent abandonment of analog channels, they've opened up even more bandwidth for Internet speed. So if your Internet is slow with Shaw, most likely its hardware on your side thats bottlenecking your connection.

nah it has nothing to do with my router.. i was on warp for the longest time with the same setup and i was getting constant 50mbps download 2.5mbps upload.. went back to xtreme speed was fine too.. until i went to this so call *NEW* netgear pos docsis 3 nothing but problems, had to disable it's router feature and use it like a modem only direct to it or thru a router the speedtest is exactly the same regardless of time and which speedtest i use.. never over 20mbps upload is always fine though. everytime i call they give me some bullshit answer.. anything over 20mbps it's working as intended.. i had to switch out of my retention plan to get this and i'm getting not even 50% of the advertise speed :suspicious:

For you guys with the Cisco modem's, the log in credentials for the modem are written on the modem itself. You can log in and disable the wireless yourself. With that said i believe there is something different that Shaw does when you call in and ask them to put the modem in to bridge mode. In bridge mode your router (not the cisco modem, but your own router) should get the external IP address instead of the private ip address that the cisco modem/router gives out.

nah i make special request all the time and the customer 99% of the time gets what they want even though the warehouse say "we don't have any". just like they used to be giving out the motorola docsis 3 instead of the SMC, even though they have some they won't give it to you unless you bitch and whine long enough and make a hassle out of it even though they don't give that one out anymore. all they tell you is we don't have any.

I like most ppl didn't want to use the routing/wireless features of the modem/router cause it's very basic and doesn't work as well as my standalone dlink. However if you currently don't have a router or just a very basic one the bundled should be ok.

Yeah Bridge mode can only be done by shaw remotely. I don't think the onsite tech can do it for you unless you pre-request it from the setup call so they flash it beforehand. It was kinda funny how I got mine into bridge. Instead of sitting on the phone waiting forever I simply opened an online chat with subject: Would like to change my Cisco DPC3825 to bridge mode. 10min. later a rep came on and said she was bringing up my account. All of a sudden my modem rebooted and I thought shit I got disconnected but nope. Low and behold my cisco was now in bridge and assigning an external IP to my dlink.

any more info on flashing the modem? i'm getting mine on tues and i don't know which one they're giving me. so i guess bridge mode is not a feature offered in the admin page?
You might be getting the Cisco as they just recently got stock of these. I was lucky and got one.

Yeah Bridge mode can only be done by shaw remotely. I don't think the onsite tech can do it for you unless you pre-request it from the setup call so they flash it beforehand.
technician's will actually contact the office to have it set for you while on site
Low and behold my cisco was now in bridge and assigning an external IP to my dlink.
lol, she should have told you beforehand that you would get disconnected to have it set properly

They just mailed me the Cisco modem. I had to have it activated and did so over online chat. It was samething, one sec I'll activate that for you....then you've been disconnected trying to reconnect. When they activate the Cisco modem it deactivates the other one so I lost connection no warning or anything.
My DL speed is the same but my UL speed is terrible with the new modem/router.

For me my upload has been really bad about 1/4 of what it was when I run speedtests, my download is the same as extreme. The built in router does have better range then my other router so my connection upstairs is better.

Yeah I'm curious about how you got that retention plan?
Best I did was get a friend to help me switch over to a student plan which is simply Personal TV + shaw extreme 25Mbps for I think ~$50 after taxes
The downside was having to switch back to a docsis 2.0 router and return my Broadband 50 router (Motorola SB6120).
From this thread it seems like they are now using the Cisco router instead of the godawful SMC for BB50. That's something to look forward to when I eventually switch back after the student plan expires.

When they called me I had Extreme and basic cable for $29.95 for a year. Just recently they called and offered me broadband 50 and homephone for $30 a year. Essentially $15 per service. I've since cancelled my cable. I think I posted this earlier in this thread.

According to shaw's website. However at 50mbps who cares lol.
What is PowerBoost™?
PowerBoost™ is a five- to 20-second burst of download speed.
We temporarily increase your available bandwidth when you're downloading files.
PowerBoost is available with Shaw Internet's High-Speed and Extreme service plans.

dont know how much u have to add on top, but since i had extreme i only needed to add $10 on top

just plug and play, if ur using ur own router then call in and tell them to disable wifi on ur modem, if not then just use.
i cant get the cisco modem to broadcast a wireless signal.

My Broadband 50 is definitely faster than the xTreme I had before but still isn't as fast as advertised. I have done 4 speedtest.net tests at different times of day and different days, and the highest I have seen was 31mbps down, the lowest was 12mbps down and two were in the upper 20s. Upload seems a bit more consistent at 2.5 to 3.1mbps. Ping is good at sub 20ms all the time.

Just had mine setup today, with the new cisco modem. What's weird is that the wireless connection works fine but the wired connection doesn't. Called the shaw rep and he says that is normal and if I wanted to run both at the same time I will need a separate router.
Anyone know the reasoning for this? I thought the wifi modem was suppose to be able to do both at the same time.

one thing to note is how often you're maxing out your connection and the types of websites/traffic you use. when more file hosts were active, i could easily max out the connection on my bb50 plan, and even thought about trying the 100/250. but now there is rarely content that I want hosted from a location where I can max out my connection. if you're using usenet and constantly getting 7 megabytes/sec+ then ok, I see the appeal.
will bb50 give me 50mbps through DOCSIS 3.0 wireless connection?
the docsis 3.0 modem is capable of over 50 and up to 250 (or more?). 50 megabits is the theoretical max on your plan, plus the speedboost once in a while.

You'd have to check to see if the cisco serves wireless N. If it does then it should be capable of sending at that speed wirelessly. I had everything disabled on mine so I can't check anymore.

i know speedtests are easy to use and you have a figure to grab onto. but isn't it easier to do 10 downloads in jdownloader or utorrent and look at the total values? i mean is it really meaningful to have speedtest.net show you ur getting a shitty 15mbps, while you're d/l itunes from apple at 3 megabytes/second EACH if ur doing simultaneous ones? it's even more convincing to tech support if you can show him/her that by maximizing your wired connection using good NA servers you're still getting shitty speeds, it may really warrant a tech to come out.
i don't use their cisco modem/router's wireless feature (it's in bridge mode), but if you can get 40mbps+ wired, buy a better router. i believe ppl on bb50 and up were given these modem/router because they are docsis 3, and the wireless router feature was just added value.
