After 28 years in prison, man emerges into a terrifying alien world...

Randall Lee Church didn't believe his fellow inmates when they warned him about culture shock after he got out of prison — he thought they were just jealous. But then Church, who'd been locked up since 1983, emerged into a world that made no sense.
When Church got out of prison, he tells the Houston Chronicle, "I didn't know how to use computers or cell phones or the Internet... It was so overwhelming. I was constantly embarrassed by simple things I didn't know."
As the Chronicle says, "Prices were higher and scanned with bar codes. Video games were more realistic. People were always on their cell phones. Cars had childproof locks."
If you want to understand just how much the world has changed in the past few decades, imagine being Randall Lee Church, who went to prison at age 18, at a time when almost nobody had a mobile phone and the internet was in its infancy. Of course, it wasn't just culture shock that faced Church — like most newly released prisoners, he also had few job skills and no support system to help him find a job and affordable housing. It's hard to reenter society in any case, but it's much harder during an apocalyptically bad economy.
In the end, faced with a world that made no sense to him, Church burned down an abandoned house, in order to get sent back to prison.

that's why a rehabilitative correctional system is better, as there's support for you to come out on your feet instead of being dumbfounded
whats way crazier are north koreans who manage to get out and are refugees in south korea.
they didnt even know man landed on the moon, and their whole life they were taught that n. korea are the good guys. :fulloffuck:

I'm curious how even someone who's been in prison has failed to hear about things like cell phones, computers, internet, and the like. In pretty much every prison but the hardcore maximum security ones, prisoners still have access to newspapers and even tv on occasion.

We want them to have self-worth
So we destroy their self-worth
We want them to be responsible
So we take away all responsibility
We want them to be positive and constructive
So we degrade them and make them useless
We want them to be trustworthy
So we put them where there is no trust
We want them to be non-violent
So we put them where violence is all around them
We want them to be kind and loving people
So we subject them to hatred and cruelty
We want them to quit being the tough guy
So we put them where the tough guy is respected
We want them to quit hanging around losers
So we put all the losers under one roof
We want them to quit exploiting us
So we put them where they exploit each other
We want them to take control of their lives, own problems and quit being a parasite...
So we make them totally dependant on us

Sure he may have seen modern technology on TV or read about it, but that's a completely different ball game from actually being able to use it.

In some cases, there is a clearly definable 'bad guy'.

Pretty much mild spoiler.
Cap is a WW2 hero that gets super power from a drug, gets frozen and re-emerges in "our time" and ends up in the avengers.
Not knowing that is like not knowing Uncle Ben was the reason Peter Parker became Spiderman.
or like
Tony Stark is a multi-billionaire play boy with no real super powers but has a metal suit that makes him Iron Man.
It's the basic gist of the character. Sure, it's spoiler, but you'd have to have your head in the ground to not know it was going to happen.
Back on topic.
I'm thinking even 15 years ago. Nobody really knew what internet was. No email, no texting, no youtube, no key fobs for apartment entry, no wireless alarms on cars, people had the Zack Morris phone...
Racism as a whole is pretty much unacceptable in modern culture.
Did they even have rap 30 years ago? Or digital readouts on consumer electronics?
Didn't people have to DIAL phones back then?
Massive companies like apple, microsoft, google, facebook either didn't exist or were just a tiny spec.
The concept of a remote predator drone would be completely sci-fi.
Speaking of sci-fi gundam JUST came out and macross wasn't even out yet.

North Korea to South Korea must be insane. I can't think of a more polar opposite physically located so close to one another.
I feel really bad for anybody who is shocked like this.
But at the same time, it's like traveling into the future.
We'd be the same kind of dumbfounded in 30 years if we don't pay attention to tech.

such as? (we're speaking of states here)
even though i h8 the israeli govt and their actions.. even i concede that in the view of many they're still the good guys
same goes with the USA lots of people think they're the heroes even when they're bombing/torturing civilians en masse (and as of recently assassinating their own citizens)
if you want to bring up Hitler... well he was a hero among Germans and their allies
