Emergency: Where to sell gold
Before anyone tells me to Google, use search, etc. this is an emergency and have no time to research because I don't know anything about jewelry. I would appreciate if I can get serious replies only.
Long story short, mom might not have enough money to get a flight back to Philippines and she might have to resort to selling some of her jewelry.
She obviously wants a place that will give her the most reasonable amount of money. If they're open on holidays (tomorrow) that'd be great too. Anywhere in Greater Vancouver is fine.
Thanks Revscene.

^ i like that place in the mall. most of the workers there are friendly, and they buy higher than some other places, and sell lower than other places. the store itself is nicely organized, and feels much safer handling expensive jewelry.
i use VBCE's prices to check, and JandM is usually cheaper, and buys higher than vbce.
Vancouver Bullion & Currency Exchange, VBCE.ca (http://www.vbce.ca/index.cfm?fuseaction=fx_services.Gold&Silver)
Yeah, J&M have been around since forever in Vancouver. Old man Iorio (Giuseppe) owned the original store, I think. He runs a little stamp and coin shop on Victoria Drive now called Chantou International. Him and his good buddy Benny Lee were the two big stamp and coin dealers in Vancouver back in the day. Honest fellow.
Sorry for the off topic shit............
Thanks for the fast replies guys.
I must have misheard her when she said Tuesday because she just told me that's when she plans on leaving if she can get the funds. Hopefully she won't have to resort to selling her jewelry since they mean a lot to her.

Maybe help her pay for her flight? :smug:
Instead of having her sell off family heirlooms.

Hm, my family had same situation when I was a kid. We had a death in the family, my dad was out of town and my mom had to fly home. She was forced to pawn her engagement ring for the tickets..she was so sad :(
mb, I know how important things like this are to moms, I'd be willing to help you if you need it. I can buy her gold jewlery for market price, I'll hold on to it and let you buy it back at the same price. You give me value+%10 so I'm protected by market fluctuation.
So say your mom needs $500, you give me $550 worth of gold, I give you $500. When you have the cash you can buy it back from me for $500..if you don't come back then I'll sell it to a gold buyer.
Hope you don't need to do this, but pm me if you want.

couldn't you just charge the tickets on your credit card giving you time to get the money before your statement comes?

I offered but being young and not being wise with my money (always buying random crap whenever I get paid), it still won't be enough. Don't get paid till Thursday (she's planning on flying out on Tuesday or Wednesday) which sucks.

Hey man, thanks for offering some help. Really appreciate it, very nice of you. Things like this gives me hope in humanity.
I'll PM you if she runs out of options.

I suggested it actually. I don't pay attention to my parents' finances but my dad told me it's not the best idea atm.
Thanks for all the help guys especially during a very tough time.

That's an absolute stand up guy, willing to help out a complete stranger in their time of need. I'm always stunned at the lengths RS'ers are willing to go to help each other out.

OP,
Try giving Cathay Pacific a call. (Not email / not travel agency's)
They do help out those in need to fly back to their home country for emergency's like these.
They have flights from Vancouver to Philippines, via Hong Kong for a short transit.

As posted above by trip, J&M. I went to J&M a year or two ago, just a block and a half west of Broadway and Main. I thought it was pretty fair, no hassles.

Respect.
This thread is full of win. No asshattery, bullshit, etc.
RS is awesome. Just need opportunities for good stuff to happen. Kudos to OP for asking the question carefully. <----- perhaps not the right word, but RS, ftw!
Redlines_Daily, good on you for offering to help out a fellow RS member. We've all been through tough times and it really hits hard when you see someone else go through the same thing.

Assuming this is a death in the family, don't airlines have a special rate where half of the ticket price is refunded back to you as long as you can prove the death? I know some airlines used to do it.

same shit is happening in my family too. My grandma passed away in Jan then grandpa left last week, we need 8 roundtrip tickets from HK to Calgary attending their funeral.$8000 in total spent this year. I feel for you.
If you have a job, why not simply get a loan from your bank?

Banks wont be open until Tuesday.
OP's mom is going to fly Tuesday or Wednesday... Plus there would be approval time needed so it's too rushed/impossible.

thinking the same thing..$10 from everyone here that has replied will already cover a good portion of this ticket

I'm just curious: Why does your dad not want you to charge it on your credit card?
I would suggest going to the bank for a loan / credit increase (if you maxed your CC this month).
I really don't recommend you sell your gold. Selling it in a rush is bound to get it undervalued. Especially if it's concerning famiily heirloom.
Please consider Redlines's proposal if your financiall straits are dire. It's really good, props to him.
EDIT: My bad. Banks are closed on Monday. You could still call Customer Support (# is listed on the back of Debit or CC), and see where that gets you.

If everyone who logs into RS daily gave a $1 the ticket would be covered, I'd be willing to give a bit to help.

I'll let her know about this. I'll call some airlines a bit later. It would mean so much if they can help my mom out BIG TIME.

It's a private issue so it would be best if we keep it within our family. That was the first idea that entered his mind though.
Again, thanks so much everyone willing to help out a fellow RSer. Words cannot describe how touched and thankful I am for strangers to help my family out. The last time I've seen my mom so devastated was a few years ago when my other grandpa died. I'll find out later today if we can figure something out before Tuesday/Wednesday.

shit just got real. i like.
Threads like this make to realize how real and connected the people around here is. You guys make me proud to be living here :)
Hey guys thanks for the overwhelming support. Fortunately my uncle offered to pay a portion for her ticket back home and it will be enough to cover a round trip flight. She also did not need to sell her jewelry which is a good thing.
I can't thank you guys enough and I cant come up with words to how appreciative I am for your willingness to help out a stranger and fellow Revscener. I'll let her know about this thread when I get home from work.

Bereavement Fares are a joke. You have a to purchase a full fare economy ticket to be eligible. And even after the discounts, it's still more expensive than purchasing thru a travel agent or online. This is for AC by the way.
