I guess Costco is the new to-go to place for a nice ring. Plus you can return the ring within 90 days. right? :lol What's better than buying a ring while you grocery shop!

Costco doesn't accept VISA and would you really spend 100K on a Ring at Costco?

Actually thats a really good price for a VS2 H 4.10Ct + .85ct. Even if you just take the diamond and build a new band, at least 20k savings from a retailer.

they have good prices on normal rings too. i wanted to buy an engagement ring for my fiance from there but i told her it was from costco and she refused. i had to end up buying a ring with much less specs from birks (i.e. overpaid by 20%) *sigh*

i should have just got it and said it was from somewhere else but i had to ensure she would like it. damn women

No offense, but what a superficial bitch. You still wanted to marry her after that? You should've kicked her ass to the curb and spent the money on booze and strippers.

Just because people have a lot of money doesn't mean they'll pay full retail price for everything or they do not like searching for deals etc.

My uncle is a millionaire and he's the probably the best deal hunter in our whole family. He rarely buys anything at regular price

AFAIK only electronics have a 90 day return restriction. For everything else they only suggest it be returned within 30 days. I'm returning a year old rug that I never really used today, so we'll see what happens.

Also, GLOW, why would you even tell your GF where you were going to buy her ring when it doesn't even matter....? It's just a rock, platinum and/or gold. The only time it should matter is if were a blood diamond, stolen or if you believe in bad karma, from a broken engagement. The only reason I wouldn't buy one from there is cause they don't offer any in the style I want to get her, so I have to go custom through a wholesaler. TBH I'd rather save the money spent on a ring and wedding and put it straight towards a house for us.

oh it's my fault for making it sound worse than it was. she's actually not superficial at all, she doesn't even know what clothing is considered name brand.

but like myself we both knew nothing about rings and even i was skeptical about buying a ring from costco...but i looked at the specs and figured costco is a large chain and wouldn't be offering a crap product.

we didn't know where to buy a ring but both knew birks was a store that was reputable and well known. i realized that b/c it was well known a premium would have to be paid.

it was my own fault i guess b/c when we went ring shopping i took her there to look and try on rings and she found "the one" :okay:

all in all i told her my budget and if she wanted to use that $ towards a smaller birks ring over a costco ring i said fine, but i still think the costco ring would have been $ better spent comparing specs. the only downside is that b/c it was listed online she couldnt try it on. i think that was a major factor for her where at birks she can walk in and try a ring on.

@ murdoc: she needed to know that the ring was of good quality and money well spent. our lack of knowledge on rings meant it was safer to go with birks after she tried it on. but looking back and having gone through it all i think it could have gone differently. we're both happy with the ring she got, but i would be more happy paying like 20% less on the same ring.

i've heard worse horror stories from friends regarding rings and working with jewelers directly and stuff so i consider myself lucky not having to go through too much drama and just having to pay a little extra.

i think of it like my first car that i bought from a shady kingsway dealer. it's a learning experience and if i had to go through it again i would know how not to make the same mistakes i made when i was younger.

it never entered my mind lol.

not sure how many people on here would have had experience buying a ring as it's mostly a younger crowd.

plus i know a girl views a ring differently than a guy. guys tend to just look at specifications. it's more special to a girl.

i made up for it by being very practical with the wedding. i picked my battles :)

we budgeted the costs of the ring, wedding, and home accordingly as it was all done relatively in the same timeframe so we still got our house. it mattered where i got the ring b/c i had to show her the ring first. i'm not the type to surprise someone and i wanted her to choose her ring, meaning she had to look at it and like it before i go buy it, so she knew that ring was at costco when i showed it to her online. unfortunately, like i said, a major factor was she had to try it on and her doubts about buying online from a store.

The markup on diamonds is insane. My g/f works at a middle market jeweler and she can get a $5000 ring for close to $2000 her cost. I don't think you can haggle at Costco, so unless their pricing is already aggressive, I think you can get a better deal in an actual retail outlet where you can fight for a better deal.

^ this.

We went to a higher end custom ring designer and got quoted just over $2k for a custom wedding band. A bit (way) out of our budget. Next we went to a diamond wholesaler/jeweller, and price for the same ring/gold/#diamonds was about $1300. Not bad, but still looking for a better deal. Got a hookup with a goldsmith who would have been the one making the actual ring for both above scenarios, $450 cash and carry. Done deal--spent the savings on our honeymoon :)

When I was shopping for an engagement ring, Costco had pretty good bang for the buck esp. for the specs, but not as much selection. But if you go into the jewellery stores during their big sales and clearouts, you can get a better rock for a better price, and usually get some sort of 1 yr free financing too. Just do your research and figure out what rough online market value for a rock with your similar specs is worth. Stores like Birks, overkill and paying a huge premium just for the name IMO. Spence was pretty good overall, but if you know what you are looking for, you can still find better deals.
