: Dennis Ritchie is dead, and nobody noticed. :(

He's the guy that invented C and Unix. And the sad part is, this was a few days ago and nobody noticed or cared. :(

But, yeah, RIP. Without him, there would not have been any of the advancements that Gates and Jobs did.

The irony is that UNIX is far more underground. Silly hipsters.

Dennis Ritchie had a comb over. Now that's a real hipster. RIP.

Linus Torvalds, when he dies, will already have etched his own headstone and written his own obituary. Both will declare that he was savior of all mankind and responsible for the modern computer area.

RIP Dennis Ritchie.

Some good Dennis Ritchie quotes:

When I read commentary about suggestions for where C should go, I often think back and give thanks that it wasn't developed under the advice of a worldwide crowd.burn
I suspect that the root of many of the differences between C/C++ and Java is that AT&T is primarily a user (a consumer) of computers, languages, and tools, whereas Sun is primarily a vendor of such things.double burn

I don't think people should be surprised that he doesn't get much credit. He did, after all, invent a tool. A fantastic tool, but a tool nonetheless. Makers of tools never get credit for the people that use them to make something worthwhile.

- Should the genius of Hendirx or Clapton be attributed to the pioneers who first made electric guitars?
- Should we give credit for the works of Michelangelo to the person who made the hammers/chisels he used?
- Who gets credit for Ansel Adams works - the man behind the camera or the person who built the camera?

Anyone who wants to be a programmer should read this book. If you "get it" then I think you're on your way to being a good programmer. If you don't, then I'd suggest looking at another career.
