| Random Cars parked on street
Hello all,
This has been a long-going problem on my grandparents' street. It's a cul-de-sac in a tucked away inner street... of an inner street. Cars have been parking dead smack in their house (on the side of the road). What's funny is thatthere are plenty other space in front of all the other houses - so it's not like there's nowhere to park if they are visiting someone.
Over the past year or so, there have been some really random (and at times,.... totally unfitting cars/trucks) We have had anything from an SUV with expired Alberta plates, work trucks, food trucks, random cars, and now a clean previous-gen 3-series Coupe. The SUV with the expired plates became parked there for over 2 months, moving position once to some stupid position next to the curb. Other than that, it DOSENT MOVE). Neighbors were asked to see if it belongs to anyone, but nobody said it was theirs.
Lately, whoever has been parking their vehicle there has been dumping/emptying their garbage onto my grandparents' lawn, papers, cans, juicebbox boxes... all the lot. It's not a large amount, but definately visible and enough to be of nuisance.
Is there something that my grandparents can do? or that I can do for my grandparents? Or know what's going on? We don't mind having cars parked on the side of the road, but the fact that we never see the same car twice worries me...

about the SUV I am sure if you report it to the city it will get tow.

call the non-emergency police line and tell them whats going on ? im sure they can tell you what to do or how to go on about reporting all this

Which city do your grandparents live in? Different municipalities have different by-laws for how long you can park there if you're not a resident of that street. Vancouver - you're only allowed to park for up to 3 hours between 8-6, m-f, unless you live on that street.

I had similar problems with one of my neighbors who wasn't using their garage and as a result was taking up all the street parking and breaking a couple laws in the process (not 3 meters from driveways or whatever it is) so i just called the bylaw and they added our cul-de-sac on their patrol route.
They also said if a car is parked outside your house for 3 days without moving, something can be done. Just call the by-law and tell them/ask them what to do...that's what they're there for.

theres has been a old previa van parked infront of my house for 2 days now....if it isnt moved by monday ill strongly consider calling bylaw. My whole street looks like a fucken walmart parking lot

Can you setup a Webcam with Motion detect to record 24/7
I remember someone on revscene got back at an asshole neighbor for parking in his freshly shoveled drive way IIRC The Big snow dump of 08' Yawcam - Yet Another Webcam Software
Set it up and forget it. make sure you have lots of space.

^ thanks for brining yawcam up, i'm actually using that at home - but without a "spare" computer I don't really have that option of setting up one and buying a new webcam for that.
I guess I'll call up city bylaw if this happens again, the last time I called them - they just came over and said we have zero proof, and that we should call the cops instead.
I called the police... they told me to call the city...

Where abouts in Richmond?
I had the same thing with a black ford suv from alberta with expired plates parked in our cul-de-sac last year along with a random camper

My mom had this problem. She lives in a cul-de-sac also, and had these two Honda Accords (same gen, different colors) randomly start parking in front of her house. At first she thought it was her neighbour's, but soon realized that these two were different. The strangest part, also like in your grandparent's case, my mom's street has more spaces not in front of houses, then spaces in front of houses. So eventually she got creeped out, after she noticed one night someone in the car at around 7pm, and still there at around 3am. So she called me to go over, I called the non-emergency police line, and within 15 minutes the police were there.
The two accords have not been back since.

if you can see people going into a certain house, call the non emergency and tell them you sorta of smell pot coming from it but your not sure if its growing or people just smoking...
as for cars parking in front of their house, there really isnt much you can do, as the road belongs to the city, so people can park where ever there is a spot...

For all those who want to call bylaw and have cars towed, you better be sure they are not your neighbours, or else you better find a place to park your car when you go on vacation.
I used to leave my car on the street when I went away, sometimes for weeks at a time. If I came back to find it towed, you bet the "who can phone bylaw the most" game is on, and not just for parking, anything becomes fair game. I owned a house in Ottawa where the neighbours played this game, it was not fun and eventually resulted in the street being marked "no parking" and fucked everyone over.
If its a suspicious vehicle with expired tags, sure go ahead, yet other cases you don't know what the circumstances are. Maybe its friends in town visiting, maybe its a BF/GF that stays over all the time, maybe its a rental suite that turned over. You're better off just getting to know your neighbours, that's worth more than calling bylaw.

Simplest thing to do is ask your neighbours if they know who's car it is. If no one knows, then call the police and they'll look into it.

You cant park a car on the street with expired tags. So that should be enough grounds for it to be ticketed and/or towed.
Like others have said, just call the city by-law, they should be able to take care of it.

IF circumstances seem suspicious, call the police non emergency number and report it.

Cops will not do ANYTHING about someone parking on a street.. if it has expired tags sure, they will leave a notice of usually 72 hours to remove said car off city streets, then they tow it.
Usually this is a city problem.. and I figure if you call enough the city will either get tired of it and either:
Put up no parking signs so nobody can park.
OR
Just start ignoring you.
This is more of a city problem, the webcam though is a good idea. Just for the fact that you can then record WHO is dumping the garbage, if it happens to be the person out of the car.. then they should be able to get fined by the police/city.

In cloverdale it's 72 hours in the same spot. After that you call or even email and they'll mark the tires. If it doens't move in 72 hours after that the tow truck will come.
If they are moving the vehicle all the time not much you can do.

A police WILL look into this matter and investigate who the vehicle belongs to. From that point on, they will tell you whether or not you need to contact the city or not.
I'm pretty sure most people who have experienced this issue are more concerned about who this suspicious vehicle belongs to and why it's there rather than being worried about how to get a parking spot back.

There was a truck once that was parked in a side-street not too far from my house. It had a broken quarter window, but it was parked there for a long while. I walked by it regularly, in the early morning and late evening, never really noticed if it was parked in exactly the same spot or not. A few spots away there was an old pontiac...pieceashit something with expired tags and a single flat tire.
Fast forward about a month, and the cops and tow trucks are there with those cars; turns out they'd been stolen awhile back by kids who live in the neighborhood and were using them to check and see how vigilant the neighborhood is with what's going on around it.
Suffice to say I'm more liberal with the police non-emergency number now.

If you have a car parked in front of your house and hasn't been moved or a vehicle that looks suspicious, there's always a chance it was stolen and dumped. Go to the CPIC site and punch in the licence number and see what comes up. A few years ago I found a Land Cruiser with Washington State plates that was stolen from N Van and dumped in Burnaby. http://cpic-cipc.ca/English/search.cfm | |
