Vancouver's Kingsway remains closed between Joyce and Tyne streets on Tuesday morning while police deal with a distraught man in an apartment on the 3300 block.

"VPD Emergency Response Team members and police negotiators have been on scene since 11:30 pm last night attempting to make contact with a distraught man, believed to have access to weapons," Const. Jana McGuinness said in a statement issued just before 6 a.m. PT.

"Several neighouring suites in the building have been evacuated and every precaution is being taken to resolve the situation safely for all involved."

UPDATE: Vancouver Police say they have safely resolved a standoff with a distraught man that had closed Kingsway between Joyce and Tyne for almost 20 hours.

The man came out of his suite and gave himself up to police shortly before 7 p.m.
