i would say robert de niro (godfather pt II, raging bull, casino) or daniel day-lewis (there will be blood)
denzel washington (man on fire) and clint eastwood (dirt hairy, good/bad/ugly) as well

hmm i've always wanted to check out michael caine movies from the 60's

Yes, but the definition of actor does not preclude female ones.
The terms ending with -ess only picked up post 19th century because people are thickheaded enough that we have these types of disagreements.
