Shaw or Telus TV?

give me your opinions on each and which you'd go for
would be shaw HD at a minimun, and Optik TV with some HD channels i guess
with shaw i'd get the HDPVR as well
Both systems are a work in progress with bugs and glitches on each side. I'm assuming you're comparing the new Gateway system to Optik TV.
I would choose neither. Instead, stick to a Motorola PVR on Shaw.

no wasn't going to get the Gateway system, just the HD tv and the PVR with Shaw

Depends on what you want form it. Telus has limitations of how many boxes/streams you can support. I remember when I first looked at it Telus only supported 2 HD streams or 1 HD and 2 SD streams. Thus if I wanted to watch a HD show, PVR a HD show, my roommate couldn't watch TV his bedroom. Find out the limitations of Telus in your area. AFAIK Telus offers different bandwidths in different areas, so YMMV.
I went with Shaw cause I got a smoking deal on an HD PVR and NFL Sunday Ticket. I do prefer the interface on the Telus boxes, the Shaw Motorola PVR is the same old crappy Shaw menu system.
I have Telus internet (cheaper than Shaw internet bundled) and have never had problems with Shaw, yet have issues with Telus a couple times a year.

Shaw...if you don't care about their lack of customer service and horrific wait times for technical support. I don't require tech. support that often, my picture is mostly top notch and sound to match...
On the odd occasion my hardware doesn't perform the way it should, I call and have to wait in line for HOURS to get a hold of someone. Apart from that, Shaw is better than Telus. (Gateway blows though.)

I just switched from Shaw to telus. I like the UI more then Shaw's. I also like that you can keep recording after a show ends while Shaw's box doesn't have that feature. Some shows go on a bit longer then their scheduled run time. Also having more HD channels then Shaw is nice. I don't like that we have to use telus's all in one modem-router-tv modem. But having a cheaper monthly bill is nice and a laptop.. Havent used the internet yet, but will be comparing speeds

Bell more hd channels new channels come out on Bell first shaw doesnt get em for like a year or so later for example SPACE HD / Much HD (been on Shaw for months) the chinese movie channels etc were on Bell for like a year before Shaw got em etc etc edit: havent compared to optiktv just did a quick glance and optik looks better than shaw for tv too only 3 tvs can watch separate HD feeds though if that matters :crazy2:
I also like that you can keep recording after a show ends while Shaw's box doesn't have that feature.
it does you have to go back into the "record" function and "modify settings for this program only"
i would go Bell but its not in our area (in ridge) apparently

You can do that on shaw when you set it up to record a series. You set how many minutes you'd like it to record beyond the time.

I don't know if internet factors into your decision making at all, but having lived in 8 places in the last 10 years, I would say Shaw internet is head and shoulders about telus.

I had Shaw for years, TV/Internet. Been on Telus Optik for the last year.
Service wise, in my area I get 1HD + 2SD feeds. Internet speeds of 14mbps/.85mbps
Telus' UI is miles ahead of Shaw's. The ability to remote record from any PC or Android/Blackberry/iPhone is fantastic.
Telus does offer more HD channels than Shaw. That, and their time-shifting actually works better, I find.
I haven't had a single day of downtime for internet or TV with Telus, or a service outage in the entire year I've been with them. Shaw, I'd have service outages every couple of months, lasting anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours.
Telus' internet speed has also been far more consistent. It doesn't drop under 12mbps on me, while Shaw would fluctuate wildly between 2mbps and 25mbps. There was zero consistency.
As far as pricing, after promotional pricing ends for either, I end up paying $14/mo less for Telus compared to Shaw.

telus blows... the more tv's you have on the slower your internet speed...
shaw gateway has the new ui and its much nicer. still a little glitchy here and there but the bugs are getting worked out. can record 6 shows at once. bundled with broadband 50 and telus can't even compete.

The most beneficial thing about Telus TV/internet combo is they effectively have unlimited downloading since both their TV and internet run off the same connection, they can't differentiate between the two types of traffic. Since you obviously don't get charged extra for watching TV too much, it means that your internet traffic goes unchecked and unmetered.

Switched from Shaw to Telus and never looked back. I have the 3HD/1SD feed with 25Mbps internet. Like everyone said UI on Telus is great! I do get more HD channels, but there's no HD Net, so it evens out. The best part with Telus is that I don't have to wait 4 hours to reach a customer service rep. Shaw has ridiculous wait times at the call centre. Telus is usually about 5-10mins. Hardware is free, you have to wait for promos, got 2 Telus box free at Futureshop and London Drugs, where you buy a tv, they'll throw in a box for free.

Telus offering decent freebies with 3 year term..
Guess I'll call Telus and see what their pricing is like for an apples to apples package and make a decision.

I switched to telus because of a cheap deal after being with shaw for many years and I truly regret it. I have 3 TVs and when the TVs are on and I'm gaming, it lags so bad. to summarize, telus is more technologically advanced and has cooler technology = better. however id prolly just go with whoever has the better deal i guess at thetime

its a price vs performance thing
if your a price sensitive consumer then go with telus. their prices ARE better but there's no way around the fact that they can't compete performance wise.
why do you think it's cheaper?
if you want the performance then a few dollars more per month is something you can live with.
and just to be clear. i did say it in my post above but 176 include home phone service. i think home phone is ~25 a month after taxes.
i get consistently 35+ Mbps internet on broadband 50

If you're getting service installed, Telus includes all necessary installation on the initial install.
The tech spent 5 hours running new wires, installing outlets, etc. when I got mine installed a year ago. I only needed it in 3 rooms (1 for internet, 2 for tv) but it was literally on 3 opposite corners of the house.

Cost is the box itself which is really in the premium range (200bux)...shows are about a day late for most at no cost..,they grab it directly from websites so it's more like iptv and watch whenever...CCTV streaming is close to hd quality too...
They have other channels that are few and some are paid like vudu or Netflix and such...once you're in you'll eventually hear of naxi-x...

Telus told me Shaws 50mb advertised speed is shared with the neighbourhood where telus' 25 is delivered right to your door - can anyone confirm this?
I'm really not too concerned about internet slowing down when I'm watching tv. Don't dl much and never game.
Comparable package to what I have now with Shaw will only save me $4/mo with Telus. However, I'm building a theatre room and need another HD PVR = $200 plus $50 to run a new outlet. Telus will come and give me 3 boxes and install for free so that's $250 in savings + the free Samsung tablet worth $500. Add all that to the $144 I'll save over the duration of the 3 year contract and I'm up almost $900... I could easily sell my PVR for $100 and its 1k.
Explained this to a lady in Shaw retention (minus the PVR selling) and she turned into a total bitch. "We're not in the business of training our customers anytime their promo pricing expires, they can threaten to go to Telus and we'll give them a new promo"

with telus atm cuz i managed to get a great deal with them...
70 dollars for home phone (caller id and free long d to hk), optik tv (any 6 themes and hd sports + basic), 15 down fibre optics
no contract so i can leave this obligation anytime i want...
had a few problems with the setup and they were very responsive to my request
had a problem with where my router was setup, called them through their support hotline and waited about 5 minutes to get to the tech.
the tech tested a few things for me on his end and determined that they would need to send someone to my place to get manually rewire some of the lines in my home. they allowed me to choose the time when the tech would come, the problem was solved within an hour and the onsite tech helped me setup my optik tv on the side also...
all in all im having a positive experience with telus in terms of their services.

With Shaw, you share one big fat pipe amongst your neighbours.
With Telus, you have your own fibre run between your home and the central office (in a nut shell.)
Telus does not run fibre to your house. The last mile is copper. Maybe if you live in a brand new development, then they may run fibre straight to your house.

i just switched from Shaw to Telus recently so here are my comments
Been a loyal Shaw customer for years and purchased a HD PVR back in 2006/7
1)Price of Hardware is much much much cheaper than Shaw
2)Monthly billing is cheaper on TELUS
3)Image quality on TELUS HD is not as good as Shaw, specifically the black crush effect
4)TELUS does not have HD Net or Food Channel HD, but has better timeshift options
5) Optik TV allows 1 pvr mutiple tv's and remote recording
6) Telus has much much shorter wait times on the phone (not hours like SHaw)
7) Telus does not require a contract if you buy hardware yourself and they gave me a free rental w/o a contract as well
Currently I have You pick HD + OPtik Turbo internet for $68/month for first 6 months (138 after)
I will call back again in 6 months to see if i can extend my promo and since I am on no contract, I could always go back to Shaw and jump on any Gateway promo at that time
FYI I got the 320gb PVR for $50 ( minus $50 activation credit), the HD Terminal free when i bought a TV (both BNIB) and also got TELUS to throw in an extra free rental for a third HD terminal. Essentially all my hardware is free
In comparison, I would've had to spend an extra $500 - $700 with Shaw just to get the new Gateway hardware. Considering I already spent about $700 the last time I bought hardware from Shaw and got absolutely nothing in return, the choice was obvious to TELUS even given the image quality and channels shortcomings

I haven't read this thread, but if you haven't chosen already go for TELUS.
Our family switched in the summer and it's AMAZING!!!
I thought shaw was the best hands down. And I was choked that we got Telus. But, it was way cheaper.
It takes a little getting used to obviously. But, once you're up and running Telus TV is amazing. The menus are crips, clean, modern. Very fast and there is picture in picture in the menu. The anywhere PVR is amazing with Telus.
Chances are Telus is probably cheaper? So go with them.
My family bundled the TV, Internet, Phone and there have been no problems. I was VERY concerned with the whole bandwidth issue. But, I haven't noticed any.
However, I do not game anymore. So to be fair, I can not comment on that aspect. But, I have downloaded music and movies and my speeds are great!

Just switched to Optik after putting up with hugely varying Shaw speeds for months now.
- Don't like that the guide doesn't tell you if the show is New or Repeat. You have to look at the info and see the original airdate to know if it's a new episode.
- They need to fix Favorites. I go through the trouble to set them up, and then have to select Menu/Favorites to get the guide up with my favorite channels. Pressing Guide should default to my Favorites, not the normal guide with every channel.
Other than that I'm happy with Optik and my Internet performance.

I noticed my Internet speed is much better than when I had Shaw. When I did a Speedtest my Shaw (when it's working well) and Telus were both around 22-25mb/s. However, in actual use I notice Telus is much faster. I did some Steam downloads and they were obviously quicker than with Shaw. Same thing with some large game downloads from iTunes.

Yeah.. I'd been a Shaw guy for the last 10 years, just switched to Telus two weeks ago as Shaw was trying to play the tough guy / bend you over stance with monthly fees and zero negotiation.
Internet: Faster. Period. Porn much improved, thank you.
TV: I think Shaw had the advantage here overall. Telus' technology is superior, Shaw has countered with Gateway but who wants to shell out the $ they're asking to get technology that's already been around for 5 years. Lots of little differences that I won't elaborate on, but I'd give Shaw the edge on this.
Phone: No different.
Rates: Not even close. Telus hands down. I'm saving over $900 a year with the equiv bundle through Telus compared to Shaw.
Some guys at work are now saying Shaw will talk turkey over promo rates again cuz they're losing customers in droves to Telus, but they played hardball for 3 months straight with me when I gave them multiple opportunities to keep my business.

Wow, I pay a bit less than people here, I mean my mom pays less lol.
Broadband 50
SD and HD tv with 2 pvr tuners and 1 sd box
Home phone
95.XX
My parents pay $90 for Basic TV SD, Fairchild package (1 vancouver, 1 toronto, 1 talentvision), and High Speed.
Tax equals to $100.
I tell my parents to bitch but they are too lazy.
I bitch to Shaw and they say "you are not authorized to make adjustments." :2finger:

You do know that your current "new" rate is a promo right? I hope you factored in the price after your promotion ends....
Did you upgrade your internet package when you switched over?
I was in your position as well. My family thought of switching over but after factoring getting new HD PVR receivers and the prices after the promotion ends, we would end up paying more than Shaw.

whats after promo deals?
my promo pricing runs out in about 7 months from now, and my bill will go up an extra $40 or $50 (I signed a 1year contract promo price) they said i can re-negotiate after the year is up.
Was thinking of going back to shaw for their promo, unless Telus gives me a good deal.
Shaw has better internet. Telus does download around 1.5mbs which is still nice and fast I have no complaints with that and I HORDE games and movies and tv shows.
Telus has unlimited bandwidth. Tv and internet are DIFFERENT connections from what I hear, so you won't get slow down.
I have 4 tvs in my house with 4 HD Boxes... we can only run 2 HD streams and 2 normal streams max... but I never have more than 3 tvs on at once.
telus phone works fine... house phone hardly use it :heckno:
Caller ID displayed on your TV = awesome feature from Telus
bottom line, I save $100 a month from what I was paying with shaw after promotion prices which were just rape. I Think I also get more HD channels from Telus doing this.

Sorry don't mean to bring this up from the dead.
But are there any good promotions going on for Telus?
I'm looking to switch from Shaw since I'm paying an arm and a leg for High Speed Internet and home phone, which works out to be 70 bucks tax in.
EDIT: Looking to spend around 100-120 tax in per month for Telus Optik TV/Internet and home phone.

Free tablet is a great promo imo. You'll save decent $ for the first 6 months and their regular rates seem to be a little less than Shaw anyway. At least they were in my family's case. Me, my bro and my parents all got better package prices + the tablet for free. Made sense for us. My inlaws are probably switching too.
If you already have a tablet they have a couple other options for freebies as well.

Another quibble. The Guide on the iPhone Optik TV App has a little green "N" next to the show title indicating its a new episode. But the Guide on my STB doesn't have this. It's a small, but important feature when you're deciding what new shows to record.

If you hit info it says the first run date, or if you just wait a few seconds the info displayed beside the little picture in picture will cycle through and show the date.
dangonay
01-08-2012, 09:21 AM
^ I know that, but it's a hassle to have to wait for the info. Then you get the date in the format "20120105" and you have to look to see if it's the same date as today before you realize it's a new show.
I mentioned this previously in this thread. At least Shaw puts the word "New" or "Repeat" in the title so you know right away.
I actually use my iPhone to record shows now simply because it's faster knowing when new episodes are out.

I just received those annoying Telus calls from India last week. He offered Optik + Internet for $40 first 6 months and $70 thereafter with free tablet.
I am currently with Shaw on student plan, basic + HD sport + chinese + xtreme internet for $70 taxes in. This will expire in October though so I might switch to Telus. The problem is what do I do with my Shaw boxes? I paid $200 for the HD box and moved my old SD box to a bedroom.

I'm sure there are people who get consistent service, but it hasn't been that way with me.
I've ran both Telus and Shaw for years with a Dual WAN router so my server gets 100% uptime. The stats and logs from my router showed more data being routed through Telus overall (which shows that Telus had a higher average bandwidth over time than Shaw, even though Shaw could at times be much faster).
I haven't tried Shaw 50 or their newer packages so I can't comment on how they would perform.

Since Shaw has introduced their Broadband 50 (among others), they have rolled out a new network which rarely has slowdowns, even during peak hours.
So I think it's unfair to compare your current Telus internet connection with the old Shaw network.

Recently switched over to shaw broadband 50. Constant 50 mbps down and 2.8 mbps up. Little bit of problems with the TV though, not getting like 1 or 2 channels in HD that I'm supposed to. Talked to the tech and he said it's interference. I think it's from the security camera line also going into my TV from a s-video splitter or something.
Other than that service has been great, price is very reasonable for what we're getting.

I locked in for 2 years, that's all I needed to do to get the free Xbox360 at the time. Locking in for 3 years just gets you the free... tablet? laptop? Optik PVR/Receivers? I got the 2 year Optik Receiver for free, and bought my PVR outright for $99 I think it was at the time. FS/BB were having a sale. My 2 year contract is up Nov. 19, so we'll see if I just buy the box or what, but I'll definitely stay with Telus for the foreseeable future. Far less problems than I was having with Shaw.

Telus internet doesn't come close to what Shaw offers when it comes to speed.
And for people switching over for TV, Shaw is upgrading their network because of mpeg4 boxes and they're adding a slew of new channels which Telus won't offer or offer down the road. For our ethnic friends, Shaw has added a few new Chinese and south Asian channels.

The exact numbers are 5.6 meg HD and 2.25 Meg SD, using all streams uses 19.05 Meg. The 3HD vdsl profile syncs at minumum 26.25 Meg, but has 1meg overhead so your actual left over Bandwidth with all streams in use is 25.25-19.05= 6.2. Thats the minimum though, most of the vdsl ccts train at 31-33.
These numbers could change in the future if/when bonded dsl is used and if/when higher bandwidth VDSL profiles are used.
If you didn't guess how I know... I also install that ish.

Hmm..decisions decisions..$16.95 difference for 6 months, $101.70 saved. Currently with Shaw, what would you guys do? Switch I guess? Although internet is slower than Shaw(or so the rep says)

Just went back to Shaw with their winback promotion.
Basic Cable
Cantonese Pack (6months)
High Speed Internet (7.5)
Basic Home Phone
$29 for 12 months.
Was paying $80 on Telus for same thing after my 15/15/15 promotion ran out and they refused to extend it. We'll re-access come 12 months.

It is most likely just you. There is probably a cable fault if you have not experienced any issues before. You can check if your boxes are connected with coax that everything is tight.
