| Company Cellphones
Who here has a cell phone being paid for by there company/job?
The reason why i ask, i just started a new sales job and my company doesnt offer a paid line or allowance. I've been using my phone like crazy and my last bill was out of control. I was hoping I can get an idea of what companies out there offer this so that I can write up a business case to my company.
thanks

That's ridiculous. If your phone use is for company business and is a benefit to the company, they should be providing you with the service.
What if you didn't have your own phone? Would they get you a phone then?

When I first started work here, I used my personal phone for the first few weeks, while I waited for my company phone to come. I didn't mind so much because it was just a call here and there, it didn't rack up my bill. If I started having to use up all my minutes because of work, I'd definitely complain and refuse to take calls unless I knew I was getting reimbursed.

If you have to incur any out of pocket costs give the company the following options in your letter
1) pay for the cost of the phone related to business
2) issue you a T2200 at the end of each year so you can claim those out pocket expenses against your income (cell phone , meals , parking , etc.)
PRO TIP: brought to you by D & G Consulting Accounting | Tax | Strategy
as for your question - I work for a .Com/Marketing company and my phone is 100% paid for. I pay for all overages through payroll deductions.

If you're only calling local, why not switch to Fido and get City Fido? $35 a month, unlimited talk 24/7.

that's completely insane... small business?
I used my personal cell occasionally when i started, then had a company cell provided after a few months as usage on my personal one grew. Luckily its generally accepted in our company to use work cell's as personal phones too. I can only think of 2 or 3 people that actually have a personal cell outside of their work BB/iphone.

I worked for a marketing company a few years ago.
I also noticed that I was finding myself taking phone calls/making phone calls. I didn't mind it at first until the second month where my bill was ~$20 over what it normally is. The first month was about $5-7? I think.
So I talked to my boss and she reimbursed me and told me just to tell her how much it was I was going over. I was only on contract for five months and every month I was over on average $15. I got my money back every time.
Just talk to you boss. From my experience, they're pretty understanding. They're just sometimes oblivious to these things.

My company offered me one, but I turned it down.
I didn't feel like I wanted my company to be involved in my personal calls at all, my cell was free incoming calls which is what I used it for and I didn't want to feel like batman with multiple cell phones.
After I left, they gave everyone Blackberrys from my level up. I'm sorry-do I want my e-mail to follow me home? For awhile, I went home to get away from the annoying emails at work, then for awhile I went to work to pay for home, and then I decided to live my own life, and just stayed home. |

Don't forget, the person/company paying for the phone can get a full breakdown of all the messages sent to/from the phone. Quote:

I think my company reimburses $100/month for employees who actually need a cell for work. If you go over, then you pay it, if its under, then you pocket the change.
But I think its pretty hard to go over $100/month

I get a company cell phone, 100% paid for unlimited everything all the time with the works, but I only use it for business use. However we use BBM between us workers, the quickest and most secure way to communicate, the company can not monitor BBM however they can monitor emails/texts. Even though I don't use it for personal use, I still carry it with me because I am on call all the time. Which is probably why they gave one to me. I carry both my personal and business phone with me all the time.
When I was working sales, I had my own cell phone and I used it plenty, best thing I can suggest is get on an unlimited plan. It will be well worth it in the long run.
The company does not have to provide you with a cell phone, however some companies are nice enough to do so. A cell phone is a tool of the trade, and most people "trades people" have to carry and maintain their own tools.
btw. at work I am on my phone 80 percent of the time, it's a part of my job. I rack up hours of talk time a day. Go through about 100 emails a day on my phone. Call waiting is always in use, always someone on the other line. I always need my company contact list on hand as well. The only thing personal on my phone is my background image to remind me that theres more to life than work.

I manage wireless accounts for our comp with rogers, manage bes and stuff, usually I let phone bills slide up to a reasonable amount >$100 anthying over without justification gets charged back to user. (Regular bill is about $70 with data & talk time pooling, a lot of ppl gave up personal phones once they got bb, I just forwarded my personal phone to my comp. Phone. Posted via RS Mobile |

The shirts were blue and logo'd, and the pants were beige and pleated, oh, and the whole thing was unisex.
I was so mad...I used to spend quite a bit of money on my work attire. We didn't usually do ties in the office at our level(I left as an analyst/supervisor) but occasionally I'd wear one, just to remind people that I can look good while doing this. I wasn't ballin' in designer clothes or anything, but respectable like Banana Republic stuff. And then they introduce pleated fucking pants made of canvass and burlap, made in the cheapest mines of china, away from the prying eyes of child labour laws.
So: Our computers had to look the same, in an office devoid of any type of personal touch and we had to dress the same.
I know the term "out of the box" is right up there with synergy in terms of workplace cliche, but what the fucking fuck? We need to build the entire place to promote "in the box" thinking?
Not a day went by in my final 6 months that the term "resistance is futile" did not go through my head.
Everyone I worked with that was like me, more individual, and creative ended up leaving, and as far as I knew, they were left with a lot of drones that yes manned their way through the day. Fantastic if the director is a genius, bad news if the anointed one leads you down the wrong path.

Had a company phone at my last job, and a bb too. Hated it. Turned it off the moment I was done my shift. I found it to be more of a hassle than a benefit.

I work for a huge canadian company, i do cellular network infrastructure engineering, we can modify anything on our cell phones and laptops as long as we dont mess with the functionality of the device.

I got a company phone as-well,
if I was in your situation I would just say you do not have a cell phone.
doesnt hurt anyones feelings, and you dont have to incur the costs of someone elses business.
I had an issue with a supervisor constantly calling me on my personal phone after I missed a call on my work phone, it got so bad that he eventually just started calling me on my personal phone all the time, I had to download iBlacklist just to block him.
it is now my firm belief that everyone should have 2 phones, one for business, one for personal.
I hate mixing the 2, I never want anyone from my work calling me on my personal phone.
when you have an alternate, you can just chose to turn it off and not haveto deal with work, or whatever

It sounds like you work for a cheap small business..
I've never heard of anyone having to pay for a cell phone that they have to use for work..
I have a company cellphone provided, but they ask that we keep our personal calls/texts/e-mails seperate.. I feel like such a douchebag carrying around 2 phones.
