Steam hacked

Quote:
Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Gabe.

Just a heads up to watch your CC statements a bit closer...

No, your first time was due to installing a bad crack or other piracy attempt. This is only the forum. So unless you use the same username and password on Steam and the Steam forum, you have nothing to worry about.

Oh, I think what SP meant was that their main concern was the id and passwords of the steam forums, and that you may be in trouble if your steam id and your steam forum id is the same.

I've bought all steam games through paypal and my paypal isn't connected with my bank account or credit card, so I'm safe... for now. I hope.

But have you or anyone else ever used a keygen or cracked exe on your computer? That's usually how you get your account "hacked"

^^ ah i c then most likely

what was weird though was i got a password change confirmation email from steam that i didn't request but the thing was the email i got from steam just confirmed that the pw and email were changed there was no "did you request this change" button to click

after the account was restored though and i got the subsequent password change attempts you would have to click a link within the email and enter a captcha code found in the email

anyway so far so good from this latest issue

^ watch out for fake account change e-mails. I've seen those before, they look pretty good and take you to a decent looking site, but it's not actually the real company/game/service.

^ I've been getting multiple junk e-mails for these kinds of sites, but for Blizzard games. I don't recall ever playing WoW or Starcraft though .

I get those all the time, esp for WoW. I usually visit the site and put in a fake, but real sounding user/pass just to fuck with them a little.

I let my kids play WoW before on trial accounts just so they could fool around a bit. I've entered those user/pass details on fake sites before. I'd love to see the look on their faces when they enter in the login details, find out they're valid, and then see the account is just a trial.
