shit! decided to wiki icq
didnt know AOL purchased the company for 407million
it is russian owned now

ICQ is an instant messaging computer program, which was first developed and popularized by the Israeli company Mirabilis, then bought by America Online, and since April 2010 owned by Mail.ru Group. The name ICQ is a homophone for the phrase "I seek you". This is an adaptation of the Morse code callout "CQ", which means "calling any station".
The first version of the program was released in November 1996 and ICQ became the first Internet-wide instant messaging service, later patenting the technology.[1] AOL acquired Mirabilis on June 8, 1998, for US$407 million.
In April 2010, AOL sold ICQ to Digital Sky Technologies for $187.5 million.[2] According to Time Warner, ICQ has over 100 million accounts registered.[3]

Best part about Icq was the ability to resume file transfers later on.

Why did people switch to msn anyway? Especially during that time where there wasn't even a history option for your chats.

What's the point? There's too many of these messaging apps now that are all the same. I use Whatsapp with most of my friends but still...I think that if there was a killer app, we'd move. The resurrection of ICQ doesn't seem to have anything we don't already have elsewhere...so what's the point?

Started ICQ when I had a 14.4...didn't work for shit, had to upgrade to a 33.6, then it was WICKED.

What was it? *78 or *80 to disable call waiting (so that you wouldn't get disconnected when someone called)? And anyone else remember netzero?

oh god. netzero. i used it before. Downloading a 300mb game file took the whole afternoon......

Telus cell phone plan was $30 for like 30 minutes.
Parents got pissed when 56K dialup blocked the home phone line and they had to call using cell phone.

then Rogers@home came out, 70kb/s was like lighting speed. Downloading songs from Napster was like :fuckyea:

if you guys think the 33.6k modem was bad, wait til you use those 14.4k one.. lol..

I hated the dial up noise... to freaking loud..

obviously you never had a 2.4k modem... :)

Wish I remembered my ICQ number or even the email address it was attached to. I actually met my pen pal in Australia through ICQ. Cute girl, too.

ICQ makes me feel so nostalgic.
Remembered my username and password.. It's sorta fun sifting through the people and trying to remember who the heck they were....

I started with a 9600 baud modem. Back in the day before websites existed, and we used BBS instead :D

Helped a friend run one, and also met a gf through her dads bbs :o

I remember when US robotics was the shit. That solid steel 2400 baud modem was a brick. At least it's better than installing Kings Quest 5 on 14 High Density disks....and having disk 13 unreadable.:yuno:

Could have backed up that up before Geocities closed down for good... I did that for my wife's Geocities site that had her random anime MIDI files on it. :haha:
