Guess black and silver cars are pretty popular over there.

damn sad news, it's still statistically safer than most speed limited super highways, people there know how to drive.... it is nuts though, I drove through the whole thing from the northern german border down to the south few years back, autobahning the whole way....
most people think it's some sort of super highway with like 5+ lanes each direction, it isn't, mostly 3 or 4 lanes at times, pretty much the same thing as highway 1 to coquitlam, but the pavement is super super smooth, no bumps whatsoever for the most part..... i didnt even touch the far left lane that's reserved for pretty much super speeders, that was the only time i was a little scared driving, i had ferraris benzes and porsches blow past me in the far left lane going 150+ , had this one silver benz didnt even catch the exact model, just saw an AMG sticker, it blew past me i swear it must have been at least 180mph, cuz i was going roughly 140, and 15 minutes later i catch up and this mofo was in a fcking ditch upside down, ambulance already on the scene they work friggin fast

My rental car maxed out at 170km/h at redline in 5th gear. Going downhill, I could hit about 175km/h before hitting the fuel cutoff...
Needless to say, I didn't get great fuel mileage going from Amsterdam to Berlin. Next time - going to rent a car that can go faster.... and that has cruise control.

yeah everything is so precise on the highways there......you never see people change lanes without signaling/shoulder checking etc. EVERYONE follows the rules its unbelievable.

^ ya bro, and trucks, fcukin trucks actually stay in the right lane!
about my speed in my last post i was talking miles, years of gran turismo and i cant shake off always measuring speed in mph lol
the cars in the left lane by my estimation usually were going between 140mph and probably as high as 180mph, i mean just some ridiculous shit.... but it all felt safe in a strange way, like orderly.... now with that said, at these speeds i can easily see how this sort of pileup would occur, cars go fast easy, but have a hard time stopping....
this is what i was seeing driving an average of 120-140mph in the middle lane, cars were passing me this fast.... being a true car guy i won't front, it gave me a boner

Ya - I found it insane how much the follow the rules. Everybody can be going 200+km/h, but as soon as they hit the city, it's 50. Nobody goes over that - nobody going 60/65/70.

but every couple years there's a massive crash like this. that kinda cancels it out...

And how many small crashes do you see in Vancouver's highway system, consistently on a regular basis. Cars in the ditch, etc. Far more than once every couple of years.

I used to live in Austria. The autobahn was great if you had a good car, but my girlfriend at the time had a 1.3 Ford Fiesta diesel and needless to say could barely drive 150km/h.
This one time we were driving in the Ford going 150km/h and an Audi R8 drove by in the very left lane; I swear it must have been moving over 300. It was absolutely crazy.

So are there any details on what happened?
I can't really figure out exactly what went wrong here

They think one driver lost control in dense fog...I guess the other cars couldn't see...

Not my point, but I've never seen a 52 car crash here.

The Autobahn is statistically "safer" because the drivers are way better trained than we are in North America and are used to high speed driving. They pay attention and follow the rules to the letter. The road is desgined for high speed with many warning signs that activate in emergencies and they even have a radio system that updates you. They also know that when they get off the high speed section & move onto the side roads that they will go bankrupt to pay for a ticket even a couple of KMs over the limit. Loosing and regaining your DL in germany is very expensive and takes a long time.
Saying all that, when people loose control due to speed, which they often do, the resulting crashes are nuclear-spectacular to see. Ground zero videdos and pictures are all over the web. The laws of physics do not suffer fools or bad drivers, specially in 200,300 plus kmh crashes. The roads are only as safe as those driving on them and there is no such thing as a "safe" road, only ones with varying degrees of risk.
