What kind of education do you have? If you can only offer labouring work, that is probably what you will be doing but it's not easy to acquire such a position. The money is crazy though. Probably make a lot more than most "educated" people. But can be quite intense and fast pace labour. Pick up lots of heavy things and super dirty job.

Most of the work is done during the winter because the swamps freeze over, so it's really fucking cold. A lot of the people who work on the rigs are newfies or drug addicts. I think it's safe to say that 90% of them are one or both of those. The hours are super long. You can go weeks without work until they call you in. This is how most rigpigs end up getting into hard drugs. Living in a boring ass oil town with nothing to do but snort lines and fuck hookers.

If you live in a camp then it is it a bit better. you will probably be working 14-16 hours a day and sleeping the rest, so you will be too busy to waste your money on drugs, alcohol or really big trucks and a dozen snowmobiles.

If you can withstand the cold, stay away from the drugs, and manage to save 90% of your earning with a plan to eventually get out of the lifestyle. A buddy of mine worked up in grande prairie(where I'm from) for 6 months. Made about $60,000 so he could go to school in san fransisco. He tricked himself into thinking that all of his money was gone by the time he got paid so he wouldn't spend it, it worked.

I'd say road construction or long haul trucking is probably the easiest method into getting into the oil industry. The certification to work on a rig are pretty god damn easy to obtain and all you need to get a job on a rig is just some prior outdoor labor experience or experience working long hours...

I'd say go for it, but for the love of god, don't spend more time then you need to up there. Get your money, save every last penny you can, then get the hell out and survive off that cash for as long as you can. Being a rigpig is not what you would call a permanent career. You wouldn't want to have a family and be working that shit. See your kids 2 times a month then blow all your money on a lift kit for your brand new truck which you will doubtfully never have time to use.

I thought you were going to take over the family business?

Or start a business with 1 million?

Maybe you should just ask your parents for money.

I have a piece of advice for you, listen to Everymans, if you're serious about going to work on the oil rigs then make a firm five year life plan first. Better yet, sign up for school and begin apprenticing in a trade locally. You won't make pennies, and you'll actually be progressing towards a long term career that doesn't leave you a cocaine addict who fucks hookers.

Then again, you could live the dream, hookers and blow every Friday till you suffer a premature death.

be prepared to get anally raped (not literally) no1s in physical shape to handle that type of work you just cope through it

and get ready for mental degradation to the point you'll be considering drugs and there's lots of drugs there for you, lots

if you have energy left @ the end of the day you'll be looking to the prostitutes to drain that last bit of energy but since they're working overtime i hope you have no issues with herpes etc

other than that you'll make a nice amount of cash but was it worth it? very few survive but those that do are still forever changed

ask Penner
