AFP: US bargain-hunting turns violent on Black Friday (http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5g43D8-lihVzhex61pWkwR2C1k0ZQ?docId=CNG.fd45b16bab5be5f2e 8a7f73314307c59.1c1)
LOS ANGELES — Shootings, fights and a pepper spray attack marred the Black Friday stampede of bargain hunters that traditionally kicks off the US holiday shopping season after the Thanksgiving holiday.
In the most sensational incident, a woman pepper-sprayed other shoppers at a Los Angeles area Wal-Mart store to beat out fierce competition for sought-after electronics merchandise during a "doorbuster" sale.
The woman, an unidentified Hispanic in her 30s, was "trying to get advantage over the items being sold on sale," when she turned a can of mace on the other customers, Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant J. Valle said.
He said at least 10 customers, including children, were injured during the incident at a Wal-Mart store in the Porter Ranch neighborhood and had filed police complaints.
A fire department spokesman told the Los Angeles Times that 20 people were treated for injuries from the incident, many complaining of burning in their throats and skin and eye irritations.
"People started screaming, pulling and pushing each other, and then the whole area filled up with pepper spray," Alejandra Seminario told the Times.
"I did not want to get involved. I was too scared. I just stayed in the toy aisle."
The woman slipped out of the store before police arrived, and authorities were still trying to identify her, Valle said.
"It was chaotic, just crowded and we're trying to see whether this person was on the (surveillance) video or whether she made any purchases," he said.
He said the woman would face felony battery charges, with jail time and fines, if she's caught.
In another Black Friday incident, a shopper was in "critical but stable" condition after would-be robbers shot him in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in San Leandro, California, police Sergeant Mike Sobek told AFP.
The man and his shopping companions were approached by "several" assailants after 1:00 am as they walked to their car.
One suspect was arrested but it was unclear whether he was the shooter, and the gun was not recovered.
A pair of attackers shot a 55-year-old woman in the foot at a parking lot near a Wal-Mart in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, during another apparent robbery attempt, Sergeant Janet Hardee said. They also hit her son over the head with a gun as he tried to defend his mother.
The attackers were driven off by the woman's sister, who fired shots into the air from her own gun.
Police also were looking for at least two suspects who unleashed chaos after firing shots at a Fayetteville, North Carolina mall, The Fayetteville Observer reported.
"It's scary because I have young children and my niece was with me so what if one of those bullets had hit her or someone who had nothing at all to do with that," shopper Eddrena Wiggins told ABC11-WTVD television. "And it's like, they didn't think about the other people that were here.
And in Kissimmee, Florida, the Orlando Sentinel said a man was arrested after taking a swing at police officers as they wrestled him to the ground to stop a fight at a Wal-Mart jewelry counter.
A brawl also broke out in the electronics department of a Wal-Mart in Rome, New York, shortly after midnight, WSYR television reported. Two people were taken to hospital.

Look these people are straight pathetic. It's not like they're fighting over FOOD...it's MATERIAL goods...LUXURIES...if you have to fight like this to get them, maybe you shouldn't have them. I'm sympathetic to those who want nice things but are on a budget for whatever financial setbacks they have experienced in their lives, but for people to behave this way, it's BARBARIC. When I used to work at Future Shop during Boxing Days, if anyone got out of line, I'd make them leave the store. People are welcome to come and shop but they have to abide by rules of the store and simply rules of society.
These big box brands should have some sort of responsibility in this making sure the sales are being conducted properly and efficiently. Why the fuck do you let customers open up garbage bags of goods themselves!? It's to create hype and make it seam like it's better than it is. The stores and managers should have some responsibility in making sure everything runs smoothly AND safely. You let in a certain number of people in first, then the next, or you have your employees delegate which items consumers can pick up themselves and which items need to be given to them by an employee. This is straight crazy.

The sick thing is, its totally about "being there". Most of these people just want to be apart of it like it is some sort of competition...its not about saying "hey, i got a waffle maker for $2", its about saying, "I punched this fat bitch in the gut and jumps over another one to rip a $2 waffle maker out of the hand of some dude!".

This is just fucking stupid. Plain and simple.
Most of the people that do lineup for the sales are the ones complaining about the economy and having no job, but turn around and spend $200 on a TV they do not need. It's ridiculous how some people think when it comes to needs and wants. Sure it may be a good deal now but as trends follow, everything will be cheaper in time. (well electronics at least with the newest and best coming out every couple months) I understand people want to save money when ever possible, but if you have to resort to act like an untamed animal, it's not worth it.

Last time I lined up for a deal was boxing day of last year where I lined up at 5am outside Best Buy to buy a 4 in 1 printer for ~$100. It was packed like in the second video except that the employees didn't let everyone in at once so in the end everyone was all civil. Got the last printer and saved $100. Best feeling ever. It's all about the experience and being able to snag something at an amazing price.

I like how usually boxing day sales are a lot more controled up here. Like you said, only letting in a few people at a time. Way nicer that way.
Unlike London Drugs last year. Waited in line for a couple hours, only to have them rip open the doors when they opened. People who weren't waiting in line and showed up 5min before opening, rushed into the store before most of the people waiting in line. Thankfully I got what I went for, but still. It's just stupid when it's a free for all.

Not trying to be rude, but isn't your time worth any money?? I mean, I feel good when I get a deal but if I worked equally hard to receive that promotion, it's not really a deal then is it? If you're sitting outside early morning in the freezing cold, to get access to a building that has products in it...I mean really, you're putting some effort into it. Not to mention it's the day after Christmas so you must've had some late night Christmas dinner the night before so either you're a trooper and had little to no sleep (again, more agony) or you went to bed early and missed out on some of your Christmas celebrations.
MAJORITY of boxing day specials are available online and days before boxing day even starts. The only people that REALLY cash in on boxing day are those first 10-15 people in line. They'll get access to door crashers which are usually limited, rare sale items. The rest of the people are simply getting deals that will last throughout the weeks. Literally, until January these products last! They're on sale at Boxing Day because they're about to go on Clearance and moving out that invetory fast and cheap is better than waiting on it at regular price!
In the end, to each their own but I don't see the rewarding feeling of running through a store trying to get a product (most of who don't even know what they're looking for.)

It really depends on what you're buying and what kind of deal you're getting. I don't think I've ever gone for TVs or anything like that where each store only had like 10 max.
I've also never lined up overnight. Usually 5am the earliest so my time was definitely worth waking up a few hours early to save $100 on a printer.
Yes, a lot of sales last til January, but some items run out faster than others. For my printer example, that was only available starting on Boxing Day, not before. I believe I also got the last one because another lady came up to the rep while I was paying and the rep said it was the last one. I didn't care to find out if it were true. I only know that if you want a good deal, you better act fast.

For some, it's the experience of saying "I've done that." I sat in a lineup with a buddy for the midnight release of BF3. Sure, we could have simply walked into almost any store a few hours later once they opened up for normal business hours and bought it without the pain of sitting in a line up out in the cold, but it was one of those things we wanted to simply cross off our list of things to do.
I've lined up a couple times in the past for Boxing Day door crashers, once at Future Shop and once at NCIX. Again, it was partially down to the experience. Yes, we were up late drinking the night before and gave ourselves a couple hours to sober up, and yes, we were dead tired, but we wanted to be able to cross off buying a door crasher on Boxing Day off of our bucket lists, no matter how low down on the list it was. lol.
I probably wont do it again unless there's something I really want that's only available in store. Standing and sitting in one spot for hours on end in the snow kinda sucks. :lol
People waiting in line aren't the problem. It's the assholes that think its an all out playground when the doors open that are an issue.
I've lined up for boxing sales before and there's always some assholes that come 30 minutes before the store opens and try to budge into the front of the line. I understand the frustration of standing in the cold for x amount of hours but if you're with a couple friends, it's not a big deal.
Just because the store is having a sale doesn't mean the rules change. All the fighting and childish antics are not an excuse, you've waited a few hours and full of excitement, Big Deal!
All it really takes is one person to start shoving to start the domino effect.

I see your point but in my opinion, some people like to go to seattle just to get away from the usual spots in Vancouver. There are plenty of products that are available in the states, which we do not have access to in Canada. I would never go to Seattle just for shopping and to save a couple bucks. My usual trips down to the states involve red lobster or black angus (which we do not have up here) or when your in the mood for a small road trip with some family or friends. But since we're here anyways, why not just buy somethings that we need.
You could make the same argument about people going to Point Roberts or Blaine to get gas. These people aren't necessarily cheap, instead enjoy going for a longer ride with the bonus to get gas for cheaper.
btw notice most of the videos being posted or watched involves people acting like retards. The people who choose to wait in line properly and follow protocol aren't to blame.

You do understand that you are making an assumption when you say "you're going down to Seattle for stuff to save money."
I head out to the States to shop for clothing several times a year, and it's certainly NOT to SAVE. I end up spending just as much as I would here. It's for the SELECTION. The American's have a bigger and better selection than we do for almost all of the stores I shop at. Not to mention, their return policies are more flexible than our Canadian ones.
I also fill up my gas tank before I come back home...for a CHEAPER price than I would've if I had filled my tank in Canada. I guess the "spend more money on gas" argument doesn't really work. If anything, there will be a difference of a few dollars which is hardly a cost at all to find better selection of sizes, variety in products and better choice of fast food restaurants while I'm down there!
Did I mention that the fat American's buy all the XXL's so the small sizes are always available down South whereas here, us Asians are always buying the smalls and mediums leaving nothing left for others to buy! :fullofwin:
