Shaw Wifi Access Points (Trial)

So since Shaw decided to opt out of the wireless provider scene, they have started building wifi access points around Canada instead. They turned on about 9 access points recently in the Lower Mainland and plan to push out thousands more over the next three years in malls and restaurants to compete with Robelus' data plans.

Right now the trial is limited to Shaw internet customers with a @shaw.ca email account. You can see the locations in the map in the link below along with instructions to connect to the Shaw access point.

Say there was city wide wifi and you were connected to a Shaw access point at one place and walking towards another location that also has a Shaw access point. Would your device be able to automatically switch to the new access point with the stronger signal? Is that possible?

It's free for now. They didn't say anything about that right now. I have a feeling that they're going to link this with their internet services as a perk since they're requiring a shaw email address for their trial. So possibly free with shaw internet? Maybe extra on top?

Nope I don't think so. If you are downloading a file and you go out of range of the access point you were using the download stops.

I wonder what the range is of these access points and what's happening with Wimax.

it would probably remain connected until the connection drops then it would latch onto the the next signal. There'd be a disconnect.

There's about 11 in Richmond now and quite a few around the Lower Mainland especially in Downtown. They're mostly in Waves and A&W's. I thought there would be more outdoor ones but there's only a few.

Edit: The access point is called ShawOpen and you need to sign in when you are connected to it.

the bandwidth used will count towards your monthly internet service bandwidth. i don't understand why they didn't blanket the city and charge extra for it. without a seamless feed of data between my house and outside, there's still no way i'd lower or give up my cellphone data plan

It will count towards your monthly bandwidth later on. Not during the trial right now.

Any data used while connected to the Shaw Exo WiFi Trial will contribute to the data included with the Internet package you subscribe to at home (i.e. Broadband 50). However, during the trial period, data usage will not count towards the data associated with your home Internet package.

If you're talking about moving between two different access points without ever dropping the signal, then yes, the transfer should be seamless.
If you go completely out of coverage between APs, then of course there would be a drop..
