I've never gotten the hang of studying in libraries.
It's a closed space with tons of people who are just waiting to jump into your seat the moment you stand up, and the ventilation is fucking horrible compared to the abundance of open spaces you can find around campus (if you know where to look). On top of that, you feel like you're under constant surveillance to not eat, drink, or even talk.

If anything, libraries put me under more stress than I already am studying for finals.

I used to go there too, but nowadays every floor on the library is packed.
There are areas around 6th floor AQ that are relatively quiet other than the occasional TA walking by. That's where I do most of my studying now if I need to be at school.

i don't have the will power to study at home, seriously I'm like a fucking child,

unless i go out of my way and force myself to go somewhere i can't study.

it's too easy for me to turn on my tv/ps3/whatever the fuck else i have at home to procrastinate or jump into bed.

i also try not to drive when i go studying to force myself to stay longer.

just study at home. Never understand why people study outside.

some people can not study at home due to other distractions and the feel you get being unmotivated.

I love studying in the library as I can stay there for hours and get work done. If i do homework at home, it stimulates me and I all of a sudden get a sensation to vomit

...you feel like you're under constant surveillance to not eat, drink, or even talk.

I think this is key. When I study in the library, I'm a lot less likely to be fucking around. Like you said, the ventilation sucks, space is cramped, and lighting is shit, but at least you know shit's gonna get done. Go anywhere else, you'd have friends dropping by and shooting the shit and before you know it, it's 4 hours later and you've made no progress.

Some courses require a high GPA to remain in the faculty or be able to get into post-graduate studies (ie. med school). I am not surprised to see some people just crack under pressure.

I wouldn't be surprised if the girl was getting a degree in pharmacy or trying to get into med school and was stressed out, while the people who were talking loudly are going to graduate with a minor in basket-weaving to get a job at starbucks.

I did some studying in the Library and some at home, but like many before have pointed out...there are a lot of distractions at home.

I found some days at the library were GREAT for studying, but others were horrible. When I was at Kwantlen, I would try and book a study room b/c as Geoc pointed out....some were just there for a bullshit degree, while I was not.

At SFU, I never really dug the library atmosphere....a little creppy, kinda dark, and smelly. Plus, it was always packed. My dept.'s common room in the Education building was AWESOME! So quiet and had no walk-thru traffic.

Though this chick seems straight-up crazy, I get her frustration. Who the fuck goes to the library to socialize?

I had to tell a dude once to get the fuck off the phone or leave...and those people who BLAST their music on shitty earphones?! who does that?

GabAlmighty

See, it's the way she acted. There's much better ways of getting people to shut up. Although I don't have this problem because I don't go to the library. I bet if she had just called out "shut the fuuuuuuck up" it may have worked and would have probably caused a couple chuckles, win win.

For some people home is not an ideal place to study or work. I jump straight into bed when I get home.

6th floor SFU library is kind of creepy and dirty. But that's where I hide from everyone a few hours before exam time, even when I had a TA office. Now that I have graduated... UBC's Irving library is not too bad for studying since it's 24/7 during exam times. I just don't like the lack of food availability within walking distance at UBC.

I think that goes for both UBC and SFU. Then again, I try not to get up and move about (other than the occasional stretch and whatnot) when I study, it breaks concentration when I really get into the groove. I just bring my own food if I need to study for long periods of time at school.

Lack of food availability? Isn't the McDonald's at Village still 24/7? Back in the day when I'd pull all-nighters with friends at the Chem/BioEng building, we'd draw cards and one fellow would have to run to McDicks at like 3AM and come back with like 15 Big Xtras and apple pies lol.

In today's generation, too many people with university educations and high expectations for white collar careers.

Many of these students were C and B students to start with, but were expected to pursue higher learning at university. Some forced upon by their parents or friends. But truth is blue collar jobs and trades can offer better futures to many people. Let's face it, lots of people go to university who aren't really that academically inclined to begin with. Do yourself a favour and go sign up for community college or an apprenticeship instead. Pursue university later on as a mature adult student if you wish.

Too many university degrees out there cheapens their value, especially for those academically-inclined A students who can't find jobs and are competing with the C and B students who also happen to have degrees now. University should not be seen as accessible or desirable for all. It's for those wanting to pursue academic credentials or professions that require university training (doctor, dentist, school teacher, lawyer, engineer etc.), not arts degrees.

There needs to be more kids that are willing to get their hands "dirty" and do skilled labour jobs.
