Abbotsford teen dies after taking ecstasy [Archive]

Tragedy has hit an Abbotsford family just a few days before Christmas.

Seventeen-year-old Cheryl McCormack died on Dec. 22 after taking ecstasy. She and three other teenage girls were at a sleepover a few nights earlier, where all four friends took an ecstasy pill to lose or manage their weight, said Abbotsford police.

At around 3 a.m., however, McCormack became unresponsive and was taken to the hospital, where she remained in critical condition. She died just three days before Christmas.

“How can anybody be prepared to deal with this when you’ve got Christmas decorations up and lights throughout the city?” said Abbotsford police spokesperson, Const. Ian MacDonald. “This young girl thought [ecstasy] was the gateway to weight management, and unfortunately sacrificed her life.”

MacDonald said the other three girls were fine, even though they all took the same pill. Investigators are still waiting for tox screen results to determine the exact cause of McCormack’s death.

“I think what’s important to remember is ecstasy or any illicit drug is not manufactured in a pharmaceutical plant,” MacDonald said. “There is no quality control, there is no guarantee that what you think you’re ingesting is in fact what you’re ingesting. It’s quite possible the drug could have been in varying amounts.”

MacDonald also said this is not the first time the four girls took ecstasy in order to lose weight, though police are still trying to find out where they got the drug. He believes there may be more teens out there doing the same thing.

The family have requested privacy, but have indicated that they want the story of Cheryl’s tragic death to be told accurately.

“The family, despite obviously struggling and still coming to terms with this, has been extremely courageous,” said MacDonald. “They want to warn parents like themselves and teens like their daughter from having the same fate befall them.”

Abbotsford Police Department is seeking to identify the supplier and source of the ecstasy. Anyone with information should call APD at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

ive never heard of people doing this on purpose, but anyone i know thats done a lot of E has lost a ton of weight.
no appetite, increased heart rate, plus if they go partying they sweat several pounds of water weight in one night.

Now was it pure happenstance that she died after taking the pill or did she actually die from it? Considering the tox screen hasn't come back yet, it's sorta silly to assume what caused her to pass away, especially if none of the other girls reported any unusual side effects (apart from the usual ones, I suppose lol).

Not trying to diminish her death, keep in mind. I had a friend who was hard into E and actually OD'ed a couple times a few years back. Not good...

I was hanging out at a friends house and his little brother who is still in highschool was joking about trying E with his friends. My friend delivered a haymaker to his little brother and started yelling at him. I don't agree with hitting a family member but I've never had a younger sibling so it may be different. The little brother isn't the rebellious type and is a good kid. My friend isn't anti-drug himself and we have all had our share of experiences in highschool.

It's scary how highschooler's are now a day. Smoking weed and drinking aren't breaking news but to think they're poppin' E like it's nothing, that's scary. I've seen a friend overdose after taking E and start foaming out her mouth and that was messed up.

E is MDMA mixed with speed (meth). it's the meth that gets you super pumped up and wanting to dance. 100% pure MDMA is mellow and just makes you feel euphoric. That shit used to be a clinical drug for depression in some countries.

MDMA is methylenedioxymethamphetamine (true ecstasy) they're different things, of the same family though.

I hated E when I took it the one time. Probably due to the amphetamines... It was fun at first, but the eurphoria wore off after the party, then I just felt like I was tweaking. Never bothered with it or any drugs besides weed and alcohol after that.

Yep I'm the same way did E in the summer for the first time in 7 or so years and the come fown feeling totally feels like you are tweaking and can't stand it at all. Tried MDMA a couple weeks after and its hella chill but not my style at all. Weed a booze is the only way to go

I always thought that E was almost always cut with meth because meth is cheaper to make, and that if you could get pure E it does almost no damage to the body, but pure E is expensive so short of making it yourself it's always cut with some other junk that is hard on the body.

Building muscle increases your metabolism. You need to find a balance between it obviously. It's not about losing weight. It's about how good you look and feel imo.

It's more likely where she died because she had a bad reaction to what she took. In rare cases some people's liver aren't able to properly break down the drug causing liver failure.

There's been another ecstasy overdose in Abbotsford.

Constable Ian MacDonald says a 24-year old woman took the drug with some friends at a New Year's Eve party, and fell unconscious.

He says when people take illicit drugs, they can't predict what the outcome is, and certainly in this instance the other three people also taking the drug are fortunate they didn't have the same reaction.

The woman was rushed to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The incident comes just over a week after 17-year old Cheryl McCormack died from taking the drug in an attempt to lose weight.

everyone in life makes choices. Every choice we make have consequences which or negative or positive. I'm sure when people speed (choice) they know they can get a ticket (consequence) and for some, the consquence is justifiable (money aint a thing). Now, if you decide to take a drug that you don't know how is manufactured let alone know the chemical base of it or what it does to you, you are making a stupid choice nonetheless, YOU are making the choice. Not knowing the consequences is even stupider. I'm sure all the weed smokers know what happens when they smoke and know that the chronic could be laced if buying from someone you don't know but, for some, it's worth the consequences. At the end of the day, it is our choice to make and theses children need to learn from all of this instead of always thinking "it can't happen to me" or "i cool like the rappers in the videos" or even "i now look skinny and sexy like the girls on tv."
What i'm trying to say is, it's sad that this has happened but maybe the benefit of it is that all these dumbass kids will get a wake up call and realize the things they do have consequences...

Not surprised they're finding another drug as the source of the problem. MDMA is one of the safest drugs out there.

Deaths or even hospital trips from it alone are almost unheard of.

There are some pretty serious side effects to MDMA.
The long term side effects as documented in numerous studies are pretty profound. The biggest in my opinion being the remodelling of your neurons, more specifically the Axons which are used as "highways" to transfer electrical impulses and signals through your central nervous system.

Mind you, these results were for people who have ingested more than 50 MDMA caps over their lifetime.

I've read eight studies so far. And albeit the short term side effects aren't that profound (nausea, vomiting , depression, etc). Taking MDMA once in awhile doesn't seem to be a big deal. It's only when you do a lot there will be differences.

So MDMA is definitely not one of the safest drugs out there.

MDMA itself might be 'safe' but it is being made by fuckheads in dirty hidden basement labs, using who knows what to combine it together.

So if you were able to get prescription MDMA, fine, it's safe. But you aren't. You are counting on disgusting criminals to provide for you, ones who don't give a fuck if what they sell you will kill you.

Anyway, these people aren't taking MDMA, they're taking "ecstasy" which is "MDMA and whatever the fuck else is in there". In this case, it's MDMA and PMMA. 5 deaths in Calgary, 3 in Vancouver, 12 in Norway, all in a short time. Yeah you should be giving these guys your money.

You have a source? I'm interested, since I would qualify for over 50 through my lifetime.

I remember a study like that but the results were pretty inconclusive. For example, they had used poly drug users for data.

Lisa Lapointe with the BC Coroners Service says he was rushed to hospital just a few hours after taking the drug.

"It was in an unoccupied home in Langley. When his friends heard him collapse he investigated, they found him unresponsive," she says. "They called 911 and he was rushed to hospital by ambulance, but he didn't survive."

Police are investigating whether the teen's friends were also taking the pills.

This is the third ecstasy-related death this year. Police and the Coroners Service have issued repeated warnings to the public about the illicit drug, which is often cut with a variety of dangerous chemicals.

Last week the Coroners Service announced it will start screening in all ecstasy-related autopsies for the rare chemical PMMA (paramethoxy-metamphetamine), which has been linked to five ecstasy-related deaths in BC in the last six months.

But Lapointe stresses there have also been plenty of ecstasy fatalities where PMMA was not present.

"According to our toxicologist, who has reviewed all these findings extensively, there is no safe dose," she says, "because it's so dependent on the individual and what else they might be taking, or their underlying health conditions. There are just so many risk factors."

Lapointe adds that the spike in recent deaths could be turning into disturbing trend.

"We've had three deaths in the first two weeks of this year," she says. "If this carries on, we will see a significant increase in the number of people dying after taking ecstasy."
