: University Application Thread

Hey guys, I didn't find any threads which dealt with university applications so I figured I should start one. We can help each other out with essay applications, admissions, questions, etc.

I can start off..

So anywho, last year I didn't get into the program I wanted to because of my GPA. However, there was a question last year which asked me about an "ethical dilemma" I faced, what I did, and what I learned from it. I wrote how a couple of the members of a grad club tried to steal money and I prevented it etc..

Then this year they're asking a "similar" question which asks " Explain how you responded to a significant challenge that you have encountered and what you learned in the process." but I'm not sure if I should use the ethical dilemma again. Would it make sense? Thoughts?

I have no friends so I can't ask them :alone:

How can you not have friends? Perhaps you meant you don't have friends who are knowledgeable enough to help you.

But if it didn't work last year, chances are, it won't work this year. If it didn't get you by last year, thats a big enough sign to let you know that you weren't able to get your point across. There must have been something within that experience they didn't find appealing enough, so try something else.

Or it might not even have to do with the experience, but rather, the way you described that experience. Simply describing the experience won't be enough. You have to go the extra mile to relate these experiences to your character traits to solidify your image to the admissions officers.

Your writing might not have been convincing enough, so try getting people of different backgrounds to give you an edit/evaluation of your essay. It was what worked well for me. In the end, I ended up incorporating all the comments/criticisms that these people gave me to build up a top-notch application.

Thanks for the input man. Much is appreciated and I'll take everything you said into account for my application. I actually figured that I should just change the whole thing.

If anyone else has any questions regarding university applications here's the thread to ask! :D

No problem. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me as I've gone through many university applications last year myself as a grade 12 student.

just apply/pay your fees/ and submit the personal profile for now.

for langara, i think, so long as you pass everything they'll accept you. this means they'll check the marks for you. Thats how it happened when i applied last year.

for ubc, you'll do a self-report of your marks later on in the year (march-ish?). ubc will then compare your self-reported marks with the ministry's files in may.

Not sure if things have changed from 2 years ago when I applied but:

You have Langara mail the official transcript and other documents (if applicable) to them because you're already in college. The online grade submission is only for high school students. Better check the dates you don't want to miss them.

yeah im going to call them tmr just incase. From what i read, its always different for different programs. The jan 31 deadline is only for the application. They will email you when the documents are due from what i can gather. If anyone can confirm Thanks.

Just for anyone curious. Called and they said the application and fees are due at jan 31. Not the transcripts. They will email you or contact you thru the site for the transcript deadline, which should be around end of feb

Applying to university is probably one of the most important things in your guys' lives right now and you left it to literally the last day/minute? Really?

I'm certain it wouldn't have hurt to submit your application at least two days before the deadline and avoid this stress and confusion.

Good luck to everyone, though.

If you were the person applying and you needed to perfect your application to the point where it shows your best work, you'd want that extra time to perfect your supplmentary. That's the reason why most people submit it on the day of the deadline, and also the reason why I myself did that. Its the same reason why people double check, triple check, quadruple check on exams/tests; it's because they care and its because they want perfection so bad they believe that extra time they have will allow them to reach that. There are times when you end up fucking up your essay because you get too paranoid and overedit your work... but hey, better to do that than to submit your essay "2 days earlier" and fret over a mistake you could have spotted and edited with 2 extra days you would've had.

You're right. I spotted a mistake in my reference (I wrote "Youh" Director instead of "Youth" Director), but overall there are no other mistakes whatsoever, and I feel like my essays and extra-curricular activities are strong with results (6+ years). Do you think it would really hinder my chances? I have an average from mid to high eighties trying to get into third year Sauder.

I am a person who applied and am content with what I submitted a week earlier than you did.
We had months to do this, come off it.

I know UBC lowered the english mark to 75%(final mark) to be exempt from taking LPI this year; anybody know if SFU is still up at 80% or if it's lowered as well?

I know last year SFU was 75%. Take the LPI just incase. If you do, make sure you study for it.

just a question from a college student. Is it possible to just redo grade 12 courses via adult ed so i can transfer into arts rather than going through 1-2 years of college to transfer into arts? I plan to take bio chem.. so arts > science

will universities care if they see my marks from college and not take my high grade 12 marks?

^ depends on how many credits you have, and which university you are going to. UBC and SFU has different limits on the amount of college credits you have.

rocksforsale
02-21-2012, 01:41 AM
i think the limit for ubc is like 3 courses (which should be 9 credits) or maybe it was 12. my friend stopped taking langara courses after 9 credits because he wants to use his high school grades to apply to ubc. they consider you officially a post secondary student after that--which disqualifies you from applying with grade 12 grades

For those who have applied to UBC, just out of curiosity what are your averages? I have a 84% avg, and I want to get into Arts..

^ Make sure you submit your broad based admissions. 84 isn't really there yet.

What is that?
The personal profile?

rageguy

Also called "Supplemental Applications". It's in SSC, under Admissions. You put in your School Service, School Activity, Community Service, Community Activity, and Employment.

Oh right. That. UBC made the personal profile mandatory this year, and I filled it out. I put in 3 activities, the only thing is I have no clue if the activities I wrote are strong or not. =.=

The personal profile is basically the supplemental part of the application. I applied for engineering with 89.5%-91% average; way better than my 1st term. My average for term one was 87.5% (the mark I submitted for SFU), but will update once my second term marks are confirmed.

Since admittance is based on 2nd term grades, you still have roughly three weeks to boost that 84% to at least an A average.

Good luck!

I got a question, whats a "Letter of Professional reference"?
Do I need to get it from a prof or something? I was never really close to any of my profs to ask them for one.

I need two of those for my application. :okay:

rageguy
02-21-2012, 05:23 PM
There are different types of reference letters: letter of professional reference and letter of academic reference. Professional is usually job related, such as from a manager who you worked for recently. Academic is just that - a prof.

hmmm what if i failed one course... (fucking stats LOL) and i am going to have 10 credits by the end of this semester. (4 because of science). I am thinking about taking adult ed and just take grade 12 courses for SFU, will my failed stats course overshadow my application?

Just wondering, Fcukedd, did you get early acceptance to sfu with your first term average?

Fcukedd
02-22-2012, 10:32 PM
Yes I did, although the email did not state whether I got accepted into my first or second choice. I'm not too concerned though, because "early admittance" is only conditional.

Edit: sorry my average is actually 88.5%, not 87.5%. The cutoff average for engineering is 88, so I was confused why I still got the conditional offer.

Hey, I'm just wondering if anyone received any admission update from sauder for a college transfer yet? Thanks

JordanLee
02-28-2012, 07:36 PM
I've heard through the grapevine that some of the college transfer students that are considered to be "New" and not "Re-Admissions" have been receiving acceptance letters to Sauder.

I applied as a re-admission to Science to which mine says they received my interim transcript and they have everything they need until the final transcript arrives.

BillyBishop
02-28-2012, 08:28 PM
On the SSC it doesn't say that they've received my interim transcript from Langara yet.
The deadline was today; does it take a while to update the status?

Selanne_200
02-29-2012, 04:44 PM
I don't think it matters on when they received it, as long as it is post dated before the deadline

I hope I hear the good news soon then, since i would be considered a new student trying to be admitted into Sauder and they have my final transcript and everything already

So I pretty much sealed myself an entrance scholarship (at least 91% average)! Problem is, I don't know if I need to maintain my average of above 91% until final because I have doubts about my ability to do so. Does anyone know how it works? SFU btw.

Thanks
