: The Phone Stack

Ever had the problem with meetups with groups of friends and everyone's on their phone, texting, facebooking, generally doing the opposite of what you're supposed to be doing in a 'social' gathering?

Solution:
Kempt - The Phone Stack (http://www.getkempt.com/the-code/the-phone-stack.php)

We usually take a pretty hard line against phones at dinner, but a new trick just popped up that gives us hope for the future.
It’s called a phone stack, and it’s a buzzing, flashing reminder of every phone-etiquette rule the world seems to have forgotten.
It works like this: as you arrive, each person places their phone facedown in the center of the table. (If you’re feeling theatrical, you can go for a stack like this one, but it’s not required.) As the meal goes on, you’ll hear various texts and emails arriving… and you’ll do absolutely nothing. You’ll face temptation—maybe even a few involuntary reaches toward the middle of the table—but you’ll be bound by the single, all-important rule of the phone stack.

http://www.getkempt.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/phonestack_crop.jpg

Whoever picks up their phone is footing the bill.

It’s a brilliant piece of social engineering, masquerading as a bar game. It takes the phone out of the pocket—where you can sneak a glance and hope nobody notices—and places it in the center of attention at all times. Suddenly, picking up your phone is the big deal you always secretly knew it was. And more importantly, it comes with consequences.
But if, after the third ring, you decide your call is more important than your lunch tab, we’re sure your friends won’t object.

So doing this the next time there's dinner w/ friends.

Haha that's actually a pretty good idea. Too many people now spend too much time on phones during dinners and other gatherings.

Will work well until someone walks by and grabs all the phones lol

Pretty good idea. Going to have to give it a try.

One thing my friends and I do is when there's an even number of people at a meal (say 6), total up the bill, throw all credit cards in a hat and let the waiter pick 3. Those 3 people have to split the bill. Works pretty good when it's all couples until both people in a couple get picked..haha.

my friends and I do this when we study.

we all throw our phones in the middle and whoever answers their phone or "checks the score" has to do a coffee run.

this isn't really new, my friends have been doing this forever
every time we go drinking at my buddy's house he just has a big metal bin where everybody drops all of their shit in and we just lock it up

he tried to make it a money jar (where if you need to grab something you need to drop some money for the next beer run), but that never flew

you dont need a hat and the # of people dont really matter. all you need to do is fan the card in your hand and let the cashier pick however many you want to split it into. usually amongst 3 friends we do 1 card LOL.
and normally we do it at after meal thing such as dessert/bbt/etc since it can really be shitty if u lose to big meal

We usually do it for moderately priced meals (Boathouse, Cactus, Milestones, etc., not cheap, not super expensive). The best was when there were 6 of us, 3 couples, during the playoffs. Most of us were drinking with dinner, except 1 couple where the husband doesn't really drink and the wife was pregnant. Her sister convinced them to participate. The waitress pulled the preggo couple's cards and my friend's (he was going to pay for his GF anyways). So my GF and I got free dinner and drinks, the guy basically broke even and the other couple went from a $130 meal to spending like $350. It was hilarious.

So.... does this phone stack game apply to texts only? What if someone calls you and it's a family emergency (someone dies or goes to hospital).

You won't even know about it till after dinner. :suspicious:

:seriously:

If someone calls you non stop, it would be common sense to see whos calling, then maybe pick it up. If it was a family emergency, your friends probably won't make you pay the bill anyways..

Speaking from personal experience, whether it's friends or girlfriends...

What gets me is not so much about phone calls and the occasional texts, its more of the constant checking of bbm and facebook and whatever other media site you use/have... :seriously:

just annoying as fuck when you're out in a social setting and trying to hold conversations with people you supposedly call friends but who seem more interested in socializing through a screen on their phone.

how about turning your phone off at a restaurant, and enjoying the company you have?

...because really, I'm setting next to you and I'm going to kill some people someday. Nobody has any class anymore.
