Moved because of many reasons. Mostly I just like it here since visiting in 03. Also because I felt like something different, wanted to visit different countries in asia, thought it would help with my work (it didn't, but other opportunities came up), weather, crime, other little things

Haven't been back since 2008. Don't miss it too much except after the 3rd month of summer or so. I'd love to be able to go back every summer for 2 months!

Moved to Maryland, USA for about 2 years, back to Vancouver for few months while waiting for my job in Vietnam and now been here for about 4. Since being in Vietnam I have been back for a total of about 4 weeks and honestly do not miss that much about Vancouver.

I travel enough in Asia that anything I miss about Vancouver I can get here.

My parents, grandparents, cousins, brothers, friends, etc... have visited me a lot in Vietnam so I usually see someone at least every 4-6 months.

It was the right decision to move back to Vancouver, but I literally miss California every day.

I left to go to HK for about 2.5 years. First little while was kinda lonely to be completely honest but I started making a lot of friends out there and after that, I couldn't imagine leaving. After constant nagging from my mom and a job that wasn't rewarding enough, I came back to study and to be closer to my family and not one day goes by when I don't think about being back there. I'll probably try to visit once a year and possibly move back when I finish my degree.

The things that make me love Vancouver and be special -at least for me- are the natural attractions such as parks, lakes, beaches, mountains etc but the thing is, I can't be there everyday and unless you incorporate a hobby into it such as riding, fishing, hiking,(in which can be done in other countries just as easy) its does get boring. Like how goign to a rocky mt. tour can get boring if you go twice. It does get boring especially the sub-urb where the entertainment places are really lacking.
Vancouver also has a shitty night life if at all imo.

Imo, in vancouver, majority of the time you have to "miss" something and then "plan" to do that with other people who are 'down'. one "main event" in a day.

This is a pretty subjective topic. I sure as hell would never move back to Vancouver if I can help it. The only things I really miss are the local mountains and Mission Raceway.

Pros of Vancouver:
-Clean air, laid-back pace, lots of oriental food at very cheap prices.

Cons of Vancouver:
-Aforementioned laid-back pace = very, very little higher career options compared to bigger cities.
-Laid-back pace = (usually) also makes you slower/less driven on self-improvement etc. When you're in a huge city, just by looking at the people around you on the street/subway, everyone is stressed and you can tell they have 10+ things on their to-do list. In Van everyone moves at a snail's pace.
-Housing costs -- because Van is so gorgeous, the richest people in the world who've made their money in said "faster cities" come here and buy it up. To them, Vancouver is still hella cheap as the property on the other is still far more expensive. Thus, unless you have a great paying job, your own business, or you stand to get hella help from family, you're truly screwed regarding buying a detached house.
-Taxes. In Vancouver I'd be paying 40% effective tax. In the US I'll be paying about 25%.

RE: expats in other cities.
-I went to UBC, and after graduation, about 3/4ths of my graduating friends left Van immediately. Some to Asia, London, States, etc. So when you're going to that city, you tell your friends and somehow someone always knows some Van person who headed there as well. Since we're foreigners in another city, there's always that loose network in case something happens.
EDIT: In support of below statement -- Van people are NOT friendly -- not just the women. This coming from a Vancouverite.

Its probably easier in other cities than here. As someone new to this city, I find people very cliquey - while most cities in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes are far friendlier.

I've done exchange in South Korea, lived in Ottawa for a year. And I'm heading to Australia (Sydney) with a one way ticket in a couple months.

I was born and raised in Vancouver but I've always yearned to live in other cities since I was really young. After living out east for a year, I realized I missed a lot of things about Vancouver. However, despite my greater appreciation for its beauty and the fact that all my family and friends are here, I know that I won't feel content living in Vancouver, at least at this point of my life.

I visit Vancouver twice a year, and I'm counting the seconds until my 4 year contract here runs out and I can go home.

From Holland, it's really easy to travel anywhere in Europe. I never imagined I could I have dinner in Paris and be home before 12. But considering everything, Vancouver is a great place to live, especially when you consider the kind of life your kids will have. Asia is fun as hell and when you're there, you can live above your class at home. But I don't want my kids going to school for 16 hours a day, only to graduate from a good university and work for 18 hours a day!

Vancouver is great if you are wealthy and looking for a comfortable place to settle down, but if you are young and looking to reach great heights rather than a comfortable salary and mediocre title in your desired career, Vancouver is not really the place to be. Of course there are exceptions but I'm speaking from my personal and the experiences of the people around me.

To answer your question from a few months ago, my car is paid for by my work. I could have "leased" a 323/328i like every other poseur in Vancouver, but this car provides everything that I need, and still provides a net +ve difference to my earnings.
