I met either a server or manager from there when I was super blackout drunk(as was he). Really nice dude. Heard many good things. Really cool looking location too. Menu looks SUPER old school italian though. I dig it, but seems it could be a little more exciting considering the prices.

Nice place, cool decor, definitely more of an old-school style of fare. Had my wedding there.
Make sure to have the white chocolate phyllo dessert...I hoarded them at my reception, lol.

If water street cafe is the same as it was 3 years back. :heckno:
Long wait times for your entrees' (seriously, a long wait) if its' moderately busy, due to sheer kitchen size (one person - app and 2 ppl entree/fry)
Not to mention, food quality standards. I'd stay away if its' the same owner. A heads up.

You get to see the menu a few days ahead of the public release date of Jan 9th.
You can make a reservation for a day that falls during dine out at the place you want to go before the menus are out, lots of people do this when they know that the menu will be similar to last year's, e.g. Chambar
Peanut Butter Jelly Time!

La Terrazza, use to come here for work parties and did dine out here once. Great atmosphere but food is average IMO
Water St Cafe, terrible terrible service and quality of food. Will never go back.

Fuck dine out. Fucking shit dick fuck cock ass. I'm tired, and its snowing hard in whistler, and I want pizza, but none of that will happen, because I work from 10am-12 am every day of dine out, basically butchering sirloin and deboning sablefish the whole goddamn time. Oh and yelling at servers. :okay: We should have a revscene chefs and cooks end of dine out celebration meet in 2 weeks.

^ I know what you mean. I worked in the restaurant industry for 3 years on and off and Dine Out was a trip.
Too many wannabe "foodies" and bloggers in Metro Vancouver who doesn't want to spend another 20% on a regular day at the restaurants.

Because 20%+12% HST is 32% of your friggin bill.
I know it sucks in the restaurant industry and the servers and cooks depend on the tips but why not find another job elsewhere then?
You go to Asia and there is no tipping. I just do it cause society tells me to and I do tip 15% for good service 10% for asian places and 20% for exceptional service.

You betcha, i'm going tonight so I'll keep you posted.
Tried Chambar last night and although I wasn't thrilled with the menu to begin with the food itself was decent overall. Like some places do during DOV they offered a couple items you could get instead if you add extra $.
For appy you could get fois gras for an extra $8. For entree you could add $10 and get a ribeye which I got but wasn't impressed at all. I'm on my way out so won't go into a full fledge review right now. Hitting Salmon House tonight.

Tried Salmon House last night and our party of 4 all thought it was decent especially only being $28.
First Course we actually all got the Lobster Bisque and it definitely wasn't the best I've had but it wasn't too bad.
2nd course 3 of us got the pasta and we enjoyed it. It has shrimp, mussels, and salmon in it and the pasta itself was cooked fairly nice. Taste of the sauce was also tasty.
Desert most people got the cake but I got the apple crisp. If you don't like ginger then don't get the apple crips because there's some ginger taste in there. The cake was not too shabby either.
Sorry for the brief review but I'm way too lazy right now so wanted to make it very brief. Overall we were pretty happy with our meal. The view is nice so try to get a window seat if possible. They didn't offer options like some places where you can add extra money to upgrade which can be a good thing because it just means spending more and at $28 we thought it was good value. Yes, when you work it out it still just ends up like your getting a free desert but to each their own.
Black+Blue all booked up :okay:
Went to Bistro Sakana in Yaletown.
Drinks are overpriced. Girlfriend ordered a cocktail, it was pretty much grapefruit juice and a shot of whatever sweet fruity liquor for $10.75
$38 gets you a miso soup, 4 pieces of sushi, 3 pieces of cheap tempura, a few slices of two different kinds of fish, and a green tea creme brulee.
Now the food was actually very good, but I'm not one for pretentious fancy foods. I was still very hungry afterwards. Seriously, after a ~$150 bill, it felt like I just ate a salad.
The girlfriend really liked the place and the food. I guess that's all that really matters.
Will probably not go back.

^ did you left behind a 40% tips or something??
$38 x 2 = $76 + ~$20 in drinks = roughly $96 before tax.
How did you rack up the bill to ~$150?

Went to Suika. They had two options per dish (appy/main/dessert) so the GF and I both picked one type each.
The salmon carpaccio was good, better than the angus carpaccio. The short rib was quite good as well, but the sauce was a little sweet. Worked better on the mushroom. The mango ice cream was quite good, but I liked the cheesecake better.
Not bad for $18 each.

Could mean 1 of 2 things. Either it's better this year or our taste is different which is also quite often the truth when it comes to opinions on things like food. I'm not sure if it matters but my gf and I typically don't eat fois gras because we don't really like it but found this one to our liking.

Dined at Five Sails last Saturday.
Service was friendly and through the roof. (They offered to take my coat! and put it on me as I was about to leave) New plates/cutlery depending on the food you ordered. I felt like royalty at this place.
Quality of food was exceptional. Everything had a blast of flavour.
Small portions though. Which you would expect from a high end restaurant. I'm pretty sure you pay more for the view than the food. Was still hungry at the end of the night.
But I had an overall great experience at this restaurant.

I agree with italian kitchen being a bit of a waste though. They have basically the same food at trattoria for about 3/4 the price. Although, its glowbal, and they usually share a common trait. The menu always looks impressive, but the food always is just fine.

Yeah, I went to West too. Saw they had an insane list of openings on Opentable. Their food was not worth $38. The first entree was just Italian "dumplings". The third entree was just a small piece of pork cheek with a not-so-generous cous cous on the bottom.
The ginger and carrot appy soup was good though, and same goes with the trout salad. Dessert is a typical apple pie placed in a fancy way, or the buttermilk cake which isn't much at all.
The drinks are phenomal as always. I love West's drinks. I highly recommend the Old Fashion.
Overall, DOV at West is not that good. It may even make you think West does not have good food. You're much better off going to the regular menu.

Bistro Sakana is probably one of my least fave sushi restos I've ever been to. Great patio during the summer, but so not worth the price. I can't believe it was named one of the best sushi restos in Vancouver by...Erin Ireland? whoever it was that did the piece for the Vancouver Sun.

Did Joe Fortes on the weekend and it was great! We were there for dins in November and I had a terrible time due to the service and my food was ice cold but I decided to have one of our DOV's there since it was a good deal and I really do love this place. Glad I decided to give them another chance because they totally made up for it.
We ordered off the menu for some extra appies but the DOV choices were quite nice. He ordered the salad, I got the prawn cocktail (SO good and SO fresh), steak for both (cooked to a perfect medium rare), he got the lava cake and I got the tiramisu.
Got the Keg this Saturday (can't wait for my BILLY MINERS PIE--GAHHH SO GOOD), Cork and Fin on Tuesday and Sip on Saturday.

Salmon House on the Hill
Ambiance and view was spectacular...definitely go take a date there
however food was so-so
Had the lobster bisque which was good but not great
Ordered the New York steak medium rare and it came out medium well and wasnt juicy at all
came with jumbo fries..
for dessert i had the apple crisp...which was good
however the chocolate mousse cake i didnt really like
with that being said..this is just their DOV menu
i havent tried the regular menu so it could be different
and they say never judge a restaurant from their dineouts
i wouldnt go back for the food but for the ambiance 100 percent

Kind of like my experience than except I probably had a better time b/c my entreee wasn't too bad and sounds like the NY sucked. Agreed though, probably won't return for the food because although it wasn't too bad it wasn't GOOD but the view is nice so might give it another go sometime with the girl.

Just got back from coast, food was 3/10 at best but service was good.
Hand to god, the fries that came with the mussels were some of the worst fries I have tried. Chewy and bland, I told this to my server and he brought me another one, I didn't want to be a nuissance so I told him the second freshly made ones were a lot better. They were just as bad tbh.
The dine out chowder is reminiscent of cafeteria food, not terrible but there are so many better options in this city, especially for this kind of money.
Lobster Mac & cheese was good, $10 for a decent portion, not bad as a side to share.
Dine out entree snapper came overcooked and disgusting at first, brought that to the attention of the server and he came back with an alright snapper.
Kinda want to cry having to pay $38 + tips for this crap. My advice is to skip the dineout menu and order from their comically sized regular menu.

Went to Cork and Fin today with a few friends.
The Oysters were good, after that, the food was bland and tasteless. Would never go back there. If you have a reso there, cancel it, it's not even worth the discounted Dine Out price.

Why would you guys do DOV keg to save $5-8 bucks?
My thougts exactly! Keg is so not worth it anymore. I remember YEARS ago (like 10) when the keg was actually really great and cheaper (not that it is not affordable now).
Everytime I eat there now, I always leave disappointed and annoyed.
Food is rather bland and not excited. Also, I can not count the amount of times my dinner has come out cold.
Service is usually shitty and slow.
Cost is over-priced for what you get.
In the past, I did C (so good) and Gotham (also really good).
Not really interested on DOV this year for so reason...

I don't think Keg serves low quality food. It's just that a classic NY dinner is priced at $32.95, which include salad and sauteed mushrooms (as entree side). I would eat a NY anyday than eating their sirloin or prime rib that's offered with DOV. Steak at Keg is generally pretty good - at Yaletown Burnaby and Richmond.

holy sht 40% off DOV?
Went to L'abattoir last week and I would say the food for the most part was pretty good, 8/10
The best dishes that night would have to be Poached egg with potato gnocchi (appy) and Pasta stuffed with braised lamb shoulder and Roast tenderloin (main). The Earl grey pot de creme pineapple upside down cake were both really good too. the other appy i had were Country style pork pate (meh) and main Duck breast and leg meat sausage (not bad). I did finish the meal stuffed tho.
oh and attentive service as well, each time a dish came out the server explained and listed all the ingredients in it
All in all a good dineout considering i haven't done dineout for 2 years cause they usually suck

Yea, friend works at the Keg one of the perks is he can get 40% off the meal for him and his friends and it even applies to DOV. Can't pass up a deal like that.

Went to The Boathouse in Kits on Friday and ordered from their $28 DOV menu.
Appy: Firecracker Shrimp - Decent sized shrimp in a mildly spicy broth accompanied by 2 slices of bread.
Entree: 7oz. Sirloin Steak with Lobster Thermidor - Steak was cooked to my liking (medium-rare) and the lobster thermidor was good. The portions of the sides (mashed potatoes, string beans, and something that resembled asparagus) were less than expected though.
Dessert: Espresso Creme Brulee - Never had creme brulee before so, can't compare with others but I found it to be a little too sweet.
Ambiance was nice and the staff were attentive. Good experience overall :)

went to cobre on saturday. good ambience/music and service was top notch.
had the rockfish for appetizer and bison for main. the fish was good but i've had better but the bison was delish! the meal came a tad late so they gave us discount on the total bill.

fanny bay oysters were kinda mushy. The duck confit was deep fried, and the cheesecake was spongy.

Did the Dine-out at the Keg with a few buddies after class.
Service was terrible, but it's to be expected since alot of people are doing the Dine-outs.
The mashed-patatos were overly dry and quite bland, while my steak was rather tough to chew and over-cooked even though I had asked for a medium rare.
No need to post photos, but the food were all really mediocre. The Keg used to be really good, but IMO, their quality is sagging. :okay:
Food 6/10
Service 5/10

We kept our resos at cork and fin and maybe I should thanks everyone for making it seem like crap cause I had super low expectations which in turn made it seem not as terrible. Food was average, service was a zero (waitress even stepped on my bag handle when she was pointing out that my bag had fell...was kinda pissed bout that) but not as bad as I imagined! LOL!!
Oysters were good..but then again how can you fuck up something like raw seafood?

Went to Glowbal last night.
Appy: Grilled Beef Tataki - Four strips of lightly seared beef flavoured with sweet soy sauce.
Entree: Beef Tenderloin - The 7oz (I'm assuming) tenderloin was cooked to my liking (medium-rare) and was very tender. The bed of whipped potato was good but I wasn't a fan of the confit shallot (variety of onion).
Dessert: Chocolate Creme Brulee - Not a big chocolate fan so didn't really enjoy the creme brulee but it was good nonetheless. I did enjoy the pear compote and the almond biscotti that came with it though.
Was somewhat surprised to see that their patio was in service, given that it was a chilly day, but they had several heaters on to keep the patrons warm.
