B.C.'s first Lego store to open at Oakridge Centre

The home of the toy building brick is coming to Vancouver.
The Lego Group is reportedly opening its first B.C. Lego store in this spring at Oakridge Centre.
Located in the West Galleria by Safeway, the store is scheduled to open on April 15.
“We have a lot of families that shop here and we haven’t always had a ton of offerings for them,” said Karina Perkins, marketing director of Oakridge Centre. “Lego is one of those stores that have universal appeal to anyone.”
The Lego Group would not confirm the opening of the store on Monday. However, on Dec. 12 it released a job posting on the company website for a store manager in Vancouver.
According to the posting, this one-stop shop for Lego lovers will include free monthly mini builds, in-store play and Lego club meetings, according to the posting.
Perkins noted the store will be similar to those in other Canadian cities which offer Pick A Brick walls featuring Lego elements in a variety of colours and shapes in bulk and an interactive play area designed for hands-on play.
Lego has one store in Calgary and two in Toronto.

Cool - Metro's article is the first source I've seen with an opening date stated.
For the longest time, Vancouver LEGO fans wondered if we'd see a store in Vancouver, given the fact that US prices are cheaper, and there's a LEGO Store in Bellevue, WA (approx 2 hours south).
I was at the Lego Store in NY this summer - totally awesome. I had no idea Toronto and other Canadian cites have them, too. Hopefully, it isn't some dinky store.
Mindstorms, FTW!
:awwyeah:
I bought two tubs of legos for my little cousin from a garage sale for $20. There are literally thousands of pieces (aunt and uncle were like..:heckno:)
I would never sell my kids' Lego. Those things are meant to be handed down to grandchildren. I've been seen playing with them from time to time, LOL.

While everyone is generally a fan and loves to gaze in awe at fantastic displays, I really wonder if this store will be profitable. If its the spot in the mall that I'm thinking of, a lot of stores have come and gone there. There aren't many big toy stores that are alive these days. If you're not buying a gift for kid/teen, would any of you go with the intent of getting something for yourself?
I'm just curious in a business point of view.

I had Lego Bionicle as a kid, picked up three complete sets of them, and then the toy line just got too big. Lost track of all of it though, it's sitting in my attic somewhere.
I did love to make lego guns with the regular pieces though.

yeah it's a pretty decent mall that's generally a nice place to be now, not too busy but with a good selection of higher end products. Only issue IMO is that oakridge seems to have a lot more business types/elderly and a store like LEGO would be more suitable in a mall like metro which has a lot more kids and stores catered to youth.

Thus my post above. But right by the store will be that playground that I see deranged kids always running around and Purdy's ...and kids love their icecream bars. I think Oakridge has a daycare too. Next door is Safeway so families pulling their kids along will be walking by right infront of the store. I usualy see alot of people in highschool walking about. Though.. mostly girls. Kids are around but not sure if there's enough of them.

I have a feeling those kids who use iPads over Lego are not gonna have a grasp of fixing or building things when they're older. They'll know how to un-freeze an iPod, but probably will crawl into the fetal position when they have to build a table or change a tire.

I don't remember them being that expensive back in my day, yet I'll ask my mom. The Stars Wars lego sets are stupid expensive.

The majority of my 30yo friends that are like that today.
Its cause we're children of the 80s, when our parents made money hand over fist and just bought us stuff rather than show us how to do things.

Yeah, I see that all the time. I take value out of the fact that my family was old school. We were never without anything, and some of our neighbors had less but we certainly weren't "rich" by any means. We had a nice house, but it was a result of one project at a time. My father built a show car in the garage, but it took him 5 years to do it. He'd rebuild engines for fishermen to make money to do the next thing for the car and instead of ordering up everything through a catalog, it was build it the old school way. My favorite was seeing the ads for Mustang II front ends in Hot Rod Magazine. It was all shiny and pretty and new.
"Hey Dad, why don't you just buy one of these, it looks awesome!"
"Yeah, you know where else they carry the Mustang II front ends? The ford Pinto at the junk yard. You coming?"
Hell vegetables came from the garden, and beef came from the large angry cow in the field. Truck came and took cow. Truck came back with beef. I remember having to help clean turkeys when I was 12. That one is christmas dinner.
Dino is into watching Little House on the Prairie these days. For her, its a different world. For me, its what summer used to be. Once I was old enough to have my own animals, it was all me. I had all the birds.
It was a lot of work, compared to going to save-on, but so rewarding as well. I started having them sit on eggs, and watching as this tiny creature pecks its way through the egg-well, there is nothing quite like it. The day that something that could have been an omelette is walking behind its mother is amazing.
I think the children now, are going to grow up to be some of the most creative people, by virtue that they have had a world's supply of information, knowledge and some of the best tools in their hands from birth, and yet some of the most disconnected from the human race.
Be interesting to see.

I'm just curious in a business point of view.
LEGO retail stores have been around since the early 2000s, but mostly in the US and Europe. They do a lot of market research in determining where to open their stores, and only opened their first Canadian store in Calgary in the summer of 2010. Since then, two more were opened in Toronto, and now one finally in vancouver.
I dunno about weekdays, but the one in Bellevue, WA is jam packed during the weekends!
And look at all the people in this thread alone who have said they will visit the Oakridge store for sure! Also, don't underestimate the number of adults who are into LEGO.
Can you get this set locally ?

Well you will be able to get the exclusive sets at Oakridge's LEGO store!
Anyone here been to Legoland in California? I have driven past it a few times and really want to go this spring when I do a road trip :D
Unfortunately, the LEGOLAND theme parks are geared for kids... you might appreciate the Miniland section (where the model builders recreate entire cities), but you won't enjoy the rides. So the price of admission won't be worth it.
You can however ask for a shopper's pass, which allows you to spend 1 hour in their store. As long as you exit within 1 hour, they won't charge you admission, and if you spend $20 you will get your parking reimbursed. But nothing stops you from visiting other parts of the park in that 60 minutes... ;)

Those fucking slim pieces where you can't get any grip on either piece separately (or at least I couldn't cause my fingers were/are fat). They also always seemed to fit VERY tightly with the other pieces.
And then they had the flat top slim pieces, used for the wings of the F1 cars in this set 6335 Indy Transport - Brickipedia, the LEGO Wiki (http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/6335_Indy_Transport) (first set ever at age 6!) that had a little section at the bottom of them that you could dig your nails into. :accepted: (but they never introduced this concept to the other pieces)
And then one day my dad invited relatives over, stuffed the little kids in my room while I was at school and all my lego sets never had a chance of survival. Fort Legoredo was destroyed within minutes. I could never ever rebuild it. :tears:

Yeah, same here, until I realized I was leaving teethmarks in pieces. Couldn't stand that so I kept patiently digging at them with nails. My nails got all sorts of fucked up when I was a kid. Good times.

I think Lego has fallen out of favour with today's youth compared to when we were young. I went in to the one in Bellevue, and I felt like a kid again :lol
I'm not sure about that, my 5 year old loves it and gets my mom and his aunts to buy it for him. I sure a hell didn't sway him to get into it I hate stepping on it when he leaves pieces laying around.

To be honest, I was much more excited when the LEGO store opened up in Bellevue, WA. Now that we have a local store, I'm like "whatever"... For small sets, I might buy locally, but for the large sets, there's a big price difference in CDN vs US pricing. I'll head south for those purchases!
Then again, I'm in the process of moving so all of my stuff is in storage. Plus, I'm looking to downsize cuz I have way too much!

I went there on wednesday and I didn't experience any lengthy wait times. Was it all because of the grand building thing? The store itself is incredible. I love that they have displays and they have a really awesome selection. I also love the individual brick sales. Reminds me of a candy store. I grew up without lego(mom bought me a shitty mega blocks set, the pieces never fitted properly) So it was quite nostalgic and a bit of a downer aswell to witness what could have been...

is your "fake lego" just a different brand..becuz they are not SUPPOSE TO FIT...
if its FAKE like cheap knockoffs... then really, thats just... common sense. U get what you pay for
Purchasing Lego in Canada is expensive..especially for those Modular Sets... the VIP points dont really do much, u get $5 for every $100 on it. Unless you are looking for the big ticket/hard to find stuff. I think I can use my Lego VIP card in the US as well..not as many "points" but i rather save $50 ahah
ToysRUs, Zellers, Walmart and RCSS will have sales.
