| PS3 sound problems
I have my ps3 connected to tv via hdmi cable and optical to my reciever.
Everything works from games to movies but there have been 2 movies now that don't have any sound unless I change from bitstream to linear pcm.
Does anyone know why?
I had the box set of transformers and the 1st and 3rd one would work with bitstream but not the 2nd. I thought the disc was damaged or something at first but it happened again today with another movie. I played around with it and it worked when I changed to linear PCM on the sound settings. Also when I change the sound to French DD 5.1, the sound works. But in english, I get nothing.
Anybody know why?

Why are you running optical? HDMI does both video and sound.

My receiver doesn't have hdmi. It's old school.
I actually bought a new receiver a couple months ago and had it hooked up through hdmi but I was losing video signal. So I just returned it and used my old one. But that's not the point. Hdmi would work but not with a amp without hdmi inputs and outputs. Posted via RS Mobile | |

When you send the audio bitstream it is not being processed by your ps3 at all, whatever is being sent out probably can not be processed by your receiver. When you change the ps3 to pcm it processes the signal internally and outputs something that will work with any receiver.
There should be more than one English audio track on a Blue Ray, most have Dolby True HD or DTS MA now as well as just the regular Dolby 5.1 or DTS, make sure that they are not selected as the audio track as they can not be output over spdif, only HDMI can support the bandwidth required.

transformers 1 and 3 are dolby true HD and works fine through optical cable. It also seems like theres only 1 sound for english. I don't see it in the settings on the main menu. I'v also switched through all the sounds while the movie is playing and the other "english" sound is commentary, some has sound but not just watching the movie.

Just putting this here for everyone with a PS3: Dolby TrueHD, Dolby DTS-HD MA and Dolby Digital Plus audio encoding does not go through optical output, it only passes through HDMI 1.3. Do you have the "fat" PS3 or the slim one? The fat one cannot bitstream dts-MA or TrueHD to a receiver. "Lossless" bitstream can only be done on the slim PS3. Salesman: Some blu-ray discs have their English track encoded in DTS-HD Master Audio and thus will not pass through optical cables unless the PS3 is in LPCM mode. To get full enjoyment of your BDs, I would upgrade at some point to a AVR with HDMI inputs and can process Dolby TrueHD, etc. Most entry-level ones will do that for ~$400. Pioneer's VSX-921 get good reviews and is on sale right now @ BestBuy for $399.

I believe that the PS3 audio connected thru optical defaults to send regular DD 5.1 audio from the BD. Do you have multichannel audio "on" or "off" for your PS3? If you have it on, the BD could think your HDMI is connected to your AVR and could be sending audio down your HDMI, but since your TV cannot decode any audio, nothing gets sent out thru your TV speakers. Just a thought. However, I still stand by my previous statement that DD 5.1 just automatically sent out via optical...which is why all your other BDs work. If you try this on a "TrueHD" receiver via optical, the light which tells you the "TrueHD" processor is running won't be on.
As long as all the music, dialogue and commentary are all encoded in DD 5.1, then you'll be fine with just optical output.

Another thing to check for is under your PS3 Audio Settings -> Optical Digital -> 
You'll need to have DD 5.1 enabled and defaulted.

dont mean to thread jack but i have an old AVR that doesn't support HD audio either..now I watch blu-rays a lot so if I just upgrade to a new one that supports HD audio with HDMI connections, will it be a huge improvement for BD with lossy/lossless audio without upgrading my old 7 satellite speakers/bass? Or do I need to get new speakers to actually notice the improvement?
I have a slim ps3 but wouldn't it make more sense to let the receiver decode rather than the PS3 as it's already tasked with the video processing?

I have a Denon that i have ran over both SPDIF and HDMI and the HD audio sounds much better, with better channel separation as well.

I have some B&W DM640 which are about 15 years old and they sound amazing.
Upgrade the receiver if you have to have the truehd.
I did buy the Pioneer vsx 521 but I had problems with it and didn't notice the sound being that much better. It is an entry level though compared to yamahas flagship reciever back in the day. So I returned it.
