CBS is reporting that local police are investigating the beating of an Asian teen in an alley. The video shows several masked teens beating someone while hurling profanities.

The comments posted at Youtube claimed that the people behind the masks were already identified and their names were posted on the Internet for all to see.

The problem of bullying - online and off - is a serious problem across the nation. While the exact specifics of the beating are not known, the Asian teenager tries to protect himself as other teens repeatedly punch and kick him.

At one point an attacker takes off their shoe and hits the Asian boy in his face while another holds him down.

The videotaped assault happened shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday in the 2800 hundred block of South Princeton Avenue, Chicago police told CBS 2.

They also reported that the victim was treated and released at Mercy Hospital.

Definitely on a different scale in terms of numbers but the aftermath of these incidents is blatantly similar.

Is it necessary to ruin these people's lives? No, especially if they were innocent. The thing is, they are guilty of what they did. Research names? Yes, it was necessary if someone who knew them wasn't willing to come to the police. If any incidents of jumping/violence was recorded and stupidly uploaded to the Internet, I damn well hope that people will be want to bring the incidents to light and find out information about it. These kids are not young. When I was 17, I sure knew that beating up people was wrong and it would eventually bite me in the back; such as the video of the topic. Wesley and his buddies knew what they were doing because they made a choice to perform their action. Especially with the information about Wesley specifically beating people up, he deserved what he got coming to him. Why? People in his area are more aware of him and his buddies, he will be shamed by the public, he will be fucked for a very long time if not for his lifetime in terms of obtaining any successful career (unless he manages to start his own business or someone is willing to take him in). Is this unnecessary? Nope. Why? Awareness of perpetrators.

I agree with you that their parents should be left out. They do influence how their children behave but ultimately, they can't control what their children do.

Also, I agree with you, beatings happen everywhere and there is no need to promote awareness for that. Yet, there is a huge need to promote awareness for specific people who dish out beatings, who go on violent runs, who rape, who steal, who murder. The police are only a handful of people in the world and they can only do so much. This is where citizens come in with the Internet as their tool.

Answer this yourself. If your girlfriend/wife was raped and someone managed to snap a picture of the rapist while he was running away (video would be unrealistic), would you leave it up to the police or would you allow others to help you find information on the rapist ASAP? If you had video surveillance set up in your house and a robber came in and murdered your family, would you only want the police to help or would you allow the Internet to help find the perpetrator?

If your answer is no, I hope you're at least a person willing to help a friend or family member to identify a perpetrator rather than solely directing them to the police.

i think i'm mainly fed up in the fact that such a huge deal is being made of this despite it happening on a daily basis. but as you stated, so do murders, rape, kidnapping, the list goes on. and i know if the kid getting jumped in the video was my friend, brother or son, i'd want special attention paid to his case despite it happening everyday to other people

does anybody else think this is the stupidest shit on the internet right now? raising awareness? for fucking what? i don't even care what the story is anymore, 7v1, 20v2, 90v3, whatever. the blatant truth is that this shit happens every single day, multiple times, all around the world. i don't care whether you live in vancouver, toronto, chicago, new york, hong kong, japan, australia. you know of somebody who has been jumped, have been jumped yourself, or have been a part of jumping somebody. the SOLE reason this has blown up to the proportion that it has is because it was posted on youtube, and not only that, the right people found it and blew it up via facebook, twitter, whatever and it just spidered from there

and with that being said, i'm in no way saying that just because this happens everyday, it's okay and should be disregarded. sure, use those 7 kids as poster boys to idiots all around the world who walk around beating the shit out of random people for no reason. but reading some comments on some newspaper articles, it seems like people think that this is a one time occurrence, and in catching these kids, the world has suddenly been rid of all it's random beatings

seriously, people need to just let sleeping dogs lie. the authorities have been notified, arrests have been made, simple as that. there's no need for all these internet police to research names, addresses, phone numbers, contact info of parents, whatever. these kid's are young as fuck and their lives are being ruined when some of them (ie the uhhmm girl who posted the explanation) weren't even involved. same goes for their parents

america has this big movement of anti-bullying (like the recent string of commercials with hollywood actors) and they've had a history of trying to stop racism in the public eye

If this was your typical schoolyard fight like we used to have back in the days; which pretty much amounted to nothing more than an overglorified wrestling match, then yeah... neighborhood scraps like this would probably get little sensationalization. However, this was not anywhere near that.


BTW, Reena Virk died from a gang beating too. Should we shrug that incident as well? Or should we suddenly care because Reena died and Leo did not?

also what i'm getting at. i've heard of far too many firsthand cases where people have been assaulted by a group much greater than our helpless asian companion was. however, one more recent case, upon going to the police with a list of names and schools of attackers, my friend was told he had no proof and therefore there was nothing that could be done. upon explaining to police that he saw security cameras where the attack took place and was sure the attack was caught on at least one of the feeds, he was again told that there was nothing that could be done

which is what i'm getting at. why is leo's case so special? it was caught on camera? so are many other cases. the MAIN reason is that it went viral. the right people spread it out to the right people, and it blew up. secondly, like you said, the police have a reputation to uphold. look at the harsh penalties the attackers were dealt. had there not been video and such a widespread outrage, i can almost promise you the consequences would not have nearly been as harsh

Sorry to hear about your friend's situation. I'm usually a very understanding person, but those cops are just lazy douches. I have zero respect for cops like that. You chose a career path to help people, so do it. They should've at least point your friend in the right direction of telling him what to do next.

I just had a very long debate with my company in a meeting about this security camera topic just yesterday. I was against it 100%, but it's not my choice to make.

The company I work for owns a lot of buildings downtown. And the protocol for my company (and most other security companies, property management companies, or property investment companies) is that they will not release any security footage without a court order. And more often than not, obtaining that court order is more trouble than it's worth. Some sort of legal privacy loophole or some BS.

Basically, you can get jumped in an alley right under a security camera. You can call the cops, contact the building owners, and WATCH THE FOOTAGE OF YOU GETTING ATTACKED WITH THE POLICE, but they still cannot do anything until you have a court order.

Also if you're parking in a parking lot RIGHT UNDER A CAMERA and YOU SEE someone take a baseball bat to your windshield.. You bet your ass you'll need a court order to get that footage.

Ridiculous. But that's our legal system for you. This "privacy loophole" is probably why the cops said there's nothing that can be done.

unfortunately this is the truth, i am desensitized to violence as a result of some of the things i've seen and heard about. with all these 16 year old "hardcore thugs" running around with nothing better to do, that's what happens to your mindset. and that's the exact description of the 7 guys who jumped that 1 kid. kids with nothing better to do, and feel like they have something to prove
