Guildford Rec Centre
Fleetwood Sports & Leisure Centre

pay $30.25 for monthly pass which you can use at any gym in surrey parks, for basketball, swimming, etc. as well

year passes are available for around ~$220

What I like about Guildford: not much to like about it, 2 floors, has an upstairs for cardio machines and a circle running track, dumbbells to 100, 1 squat rack, 1 bench press, 2 smith machines, around 10 benches, some of them adjustable, total 4 olympic bars (45lb), gets pretty crowded

Fleetwood: 1 big level, dumbbells to 110, some are missing tho like 50s and some others, 2 power racks, 1 smith machine, 4 or 5 bench presses -flat/incline/decline, around 12 benches some adjustable, total around 8 olympic bars (45lb) treadmills/cardio stuff, what I like is it has more olympic bars and power racks, dislike how crowded it gets.

Saanich Commonwealth Place (Victoria)

Student rate $296 + 12% HST = $331.52 = $27.63 per month Pass is good for 4 rec centres in Saanich.

Been going there 2 years now and is very convenient for me since I live next door. 530am-10pm M-F. Pool, hot tub, sauna, drop in badminton etc. included. Gym is on the 2nd floor with a view of the pool.

JD13 can attest to how old the equipment is though. Needs updating and can get very busy at peak times as there is no limit to how many passes they sell. Dumbells up to 110lbs, 2 squat racks, 2 bench press, 1 incline bench, 1 decline, 5 olympic bars, 1 smith, incline leg press etc. Cables go up to 130lbs so I am close to maxing them out.

Once my one year is up next Fall I am thinking of switching to Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE) http://www.piseworld.com/

This area where I live between Elk Lake, Commonwealth Pool, PISE is expected to produce 1/3 of the medals at the 2012 London Summer Olympics :D

Richmond Oval

$50 tax in

Pros:
- 6 power racks
- tons of cardio machines
- fitness centre is on the third floor balcony, open area so you dont feel like you're trapped in a room with sweaty people
- rubber plates and platforms on 5/6 racks for quieter deadlifting and power cleaning
- 6 full-size basketball courts
- full track with 100M straight on the side
- indoor soccer
- volleyball
- badminton
- ping pong tables (8 i think)
- ice skating

Con:
- not enough adjustable benches
- not enough EZ bars (only 2 i think)
- for the beasts, DB's only got up to 110lb

im prob missing sth, other oval members chime in

TF Gym (http://www.tfgym.com/?lang=en) in Mong Kok

About $35 a month

-Good location
-Clean facilities, they are constantly wiping down all equipment and mats
-All rubber plates and DBs which I hear is a good thing. Plenty of plates to go around
-Everything I need can be found - dip belt, different lat pull grips, swiss balls, etc
-Everything is in very good condition
-Not very busy when I go, everyone is friendly
-Plenty of space to relax, shower, etc. Balcony for tanning (though I have a rooftop now)

Cons

-Only one power rack. Tons of space wasted on useless machines - 2 of the 3 smith machines should be replaced by power racks. 4 of the 5 curl machines should be replaced (although to be honest, those are the most frequently used)
-If the training room has a class going, you can't go in there even if there would be room, so there is nowhere else to do my stretches or mobility warmups
-Had to pay 2 years cash to get a decent price. I can put it on 'hold' if need be, for a fee
-They don't let me leave my bag in a locker to go out even for a reasonably short time

Other than the goofy machines, I like that it is a very 'no frills' gym. Very hard to find in HK, most are overpriced 'trendy' gyms (http://www.pure-fitness.com/en/hongkong/) or under equipped roidmonkey gyms (http://francosgym.com/HTML/), or overcrowded 'low price high volume' gyms (http://www.physical.com.hk/fitness/eng/index.html).

Gold's Gym Gilmore

$42 a month

Pros:
-Good location
-Lots of parking
-Olympic plates and a crash pad
-Heavy bag area
-Weights go up to 150lbs
-Tons of machines
-Tons of Cardio Equipment
-Good fitness/yoga studio
-Steam room
-Lots of body builders train here, so good place for advice

Cons:
-Only two power racks
-Too many training classes in the studio, so often times can't be used for whatever
-Gyms has cooling issues in the summer
-You have to pay for towels
-The gym doesn't ever re-negotiate contracts
-They play shit music

Gold's in Richmond

$44 / month

Everything is always clean which is one thing I like about this place. The place is never busy when I go so there is never a wait for machines or weights. People at the gym are really friendly so the enviroment is really nice.

The only issue I have with golds is as mentioned above the contract agreements. Certain friends of mine have gotten better rates than me. When I try to talk to the manager to match on prices and so on so forth no negotiations was considered.

For students it costs $137.25/1 year

I love that in the mornings there is barely anyone there so everything I want to use is free to use.

What I dislike are the days I can't make it in the morning, I'll go at night and its usually packed and filled with people young high school students who are standing around blocking everything.

It's not that bad of a gym.

Signed up for GoodLife Fitness a few years ago, and stuck with it as I travel/move a lot and they are everywhere (Especially Ontario).

great crowd, no douche bags or juice monkeys
finally got a real squat rack
lots of free weight area with about 8 adjustable benches and lots of mirrors

cons:

My pass at my community centre is about to expire I was considering Sport Central since its 24 hours and the cost is about the same even with the added fees. I drove past and the place doesn't look well maintained, does the outside pretty much match the inside?

Meh... guess it can't be any worse then a community centre gym full of high school kids that just stand around talking, or leave weights everywhere and expect their mom to clean it up. I'm just looking for a gym with more then two benches and a variety of free weights, I rarely use machines except for cables so I could care less if their always out of order. Thanks!

i went to sports central fore 3-4 months a while ago. I went around 11pm - 12am and place was a shithole. Smells like shit and brown jerks everywhere who they think they are big (but they aint) and pinner hongers/fobs who wear flip flops :seriously:

if u still want to go to a community centre gym, go find an empty one that has updated equipment and is not located near any high school.

edit: hillcrest is surprisingly not as packed as i thought it would be in the recent times i went there. I go to creekside near science world as well but place is small but has two olympic platforms for DL and very very very few people was :alone: once with everything to myself at 6pm :lawl:

The reason why SC smells like shit is a broken sewage line by the squat racks, next to the emergency exit there's an open sewage line. It's been like that since I started going there lol. On days that it rains it smells like shit otherwise its not so bad.

Wow surrey has it good.

All the community center gyms in richmond are either packed, or too small or just lack amenities.

I use to work out at the oval, but after I lost the motivation to hit the gym and cancelled my membership back in january. Now that I'm motivated again, I signed up for thompson.

I loved the ymca at langara (pool, had everything I need for working out) but I ran into too many issues

1) distance
2) Size
3) kids
4) marpole jacks

Why can't I just have a nice sized gym, with everything and a god damn pool that doesn't have clueless people walking around doing shit.

I'm sorry, but I know gym's are there to make money, but I borderline feel like it's such a profitable business that most owners don't care simply becuase once the initial costs are in, you never have to upgrade the shit.

But I hate hate hate the idea of paying 50 dollars a month (I have to do monthly, it may be cheaper to do long term, but my money is going elsewhere at the moment, and I wont be financially free till september)

The worst part is, there is no discount for low income/students and if I want to go to another gym in the community, I have to pay 1 dollar.

Why?!?!?!

Ehh I've been there for a few years. I use to praise it just as much...

But honestly, all the equipment they have, I've never used.

When it comes down to a gym I just expect solid dumbbells, enough plates, squat rack, bench and good people.

Naw man they have new rates. I went back a month or so ago.

If I froze my account which I was paying around $36/month then I would have came back but I didn't think at the time to freeze my account.

25/month

pros:
-24/7 - i work 16 hour days 6 days a week so I end up in the gym at like 2 am in the morning lol
-large facility

cons:
-might just be me, but a large percentage of equipment has some sort of defect
-for sugh a large facilty, i thought ventilation wouldn't be an issue..i was wrong

Im doing madcow 5x5, so almost all I need is a rack and those super rare 2.5-10 lb plates.
If you see some asian guy in sweats and a white t at night, hogging lots of small plates at the squat rack, thats probably me.

I use to go there. It's a really nice gym. Has a pool and steam room too. All the equipment is fairly new and the staff is friendly.

yeah interested to know the price as I will be moving to that area and looking for a gym. Not too keen on the Steve Nash or Goodlife on North Road.

Does it get as busy at fitness 2000 compared to those places during peak hours?

Well, sc is worse than before. Not even enough bars to go around.
I had to lug mine around doing squats, then bench, then rows

I paid around 40 a month. IMO it doesnt get as busy as the other places. I never really waited for anything during peak hours. I think u can try it for a free.

ps - 24/7 would be nice too.

went to fitness world today and signed up for a 12 month membership. total was a little less than $700 in 3 payments. after walking out i realize, that is quite expensive. i have 10 days to cancel for a full refund, which i think i'll cancel at 8 days seeing that fitness 2000 has 6 months for $199. all i'm looking for is a gym with a pool.

Thompson but I'm probably switching to the oval since its the same distance (I live in 4)

I've worked out at golds which is pretty good, but too many "buddy's" work out there

I've also been to sport central in 07 and that place blows.

South Arm blows.

All the community centers except for thompson blow.

Oval is your best bet. I just wish they had a pool.

I also wished I lived by a YMCA because they do have the best and I mean best facilities i've ever seen.

i worked out there for years just cause its close. Y is always jam packed in the evenings like from 5 all the way till 9. no decline bench and a while back they were missing one of the OLY bars (1 of 5 total) for like 6 weeks.

finally bit the bullet and joined platinum, way less busy, way more equipment way more room, sauna is included. Competitively priced supps in their store. its 19+ so no high school kids. open till midnight weekdays and fairly late weekends too. $35/motnh no contract and $5 off for anybody you refer (so if you do join and dont konw anybody PM me!).

also i checked out elevation too, but theyre pretty expensive, like ~$50+ i think and blelieve theyre contract, pricey for no pool or sauna. Pro is that hardly anyone goes there. its just south of hwy 10 off 152, where the fedex building is. if you go south on 152 its your first right after hwy 10

^^ i go to Good Life Fitness..its a great gym tbh, love the environment there, most ppl who are tehre dont fuck around cept your usual here n there, friendly as hell (even the guy who looks liek he's on roids)

pros (for me)

close to home
easy to find parking underground,
24hrs
AC
not TOO busy

cons

fucking expensive
international chest monday , its packed LOL
DB's only up to 100 (i aint close to it so i shudnt complain)

im paying bout 65$ per month right now and that was on a 2yr plan..pretty much done there though, moving to a diff gym dont know where too yet...prob steve nash ( but so much further to drive, cus i dont wanna go to the lougheed one )

Tried out the Brentwood Steve Nash, sales was a short Asian dude pushy as fuck, basically wanted to know how much money I had to my name and had the type of look that you just wanna punch off his face. Steve Nash Richmond is a good gym that is kept clean all the time. You will never really have any trouble finding weights but, as with any other gym, has its fair share of douche bags.

It also gets really busy around 5pm up until 730.

I paid upfront and got a pretty awesome deal which averaged out to about $30 a month.

Other than that it's a pretty decent gym.

I went to steve nash SC in downtown because I got a groupon pass before I knew I could extend my sport central pass.
They tried to get me to sign up there, but when the 2nd sales rep started talking to me and knew I went to SC, they basically gave up. $15/month vs $50/month.
I like SC more too, I dont know why. It has more of a "rocky" feel to it.
That, and nash only has one full rack. I cant do my squats low enough on the half rack.
