HELP! how do i reset security / permissions on external drive - Win7

OK..so i thought i'd try to be a hero and tried setting up streaming from my external drive (connected to PC) to my WDTV Live via wifi.

So i set up all this bogus sharing and permissions / security...then i realized..blah..not gonna bother. streaming of blurays was kinda choppy.

BUT..now am stuck with this drive that has all these 'locks' on it and i cant get access...i can go in there dir by dir and setup myself as the user but theres a ton of files on it. what a pain... secondly, if i take this drive and connect it to my laptop upstairs (also win7), it doesnt even recognize the drive and wants to format it~~~!!!

HELP! all i wanna do is reset the user access and remove all those locks! ARGH~!!!!

It is a WD 2tb external formatted NTFS.

Have you tried going to the properties for the root of the drive? You should be able to set the permission in there, and then it will propagate to all the subfolders.

Yeah you have to take ownership of the folders in the properties. I don't remember how to do it off the top of my head.

to take ownership

right click root drive and select properties.
then select security tab>advance
Owners tab then select edit
select owner and check replace owner on subcontainers and objects
