Sucks that getting an oz of bullion at the bank is still way cheaper than this.

The purchase of these coins is not just for the metal. They are collector coins, and they are also legal tender. For $20 bucks (no taxes/shipping), you get a coin that's worth, at least, $20 CDN, when you receive it. Even if it doesn't appreciate in collector value, it's still worth 20 Canadian bucks. Buy it on your credit card and at least get some points!

what are you talking about? an oz is $33.50 spot right now.

Death2Theft

These coins are 7.98 grams if the math is right it's 1/4 oz.

godwin
01-30-2012, 09:53 AM
Yes it is that amount for an oz.. but the coin is not a full oz coin.

The mint is no longer a purely gov non profit operation and they are no dummy.. the silver coins of today are not as valuable in terms of metal than the coins of the past.

It cost them about $8 of silver to make a $20 tender coin.

what are you talking about? an oz is $33.50 spot right now.

Yeah, they're banking on people holding onto them.

I don't know why I keep buying these. LoL

These coins are 7.98 grams if the math is right it's 1/4 oz.

yeah but theres a face value of $20 what part of that dont you understand?
you're buying a $20 coin for $20.

a 1oz silver coin is face value $5, so lets say one day silver tanks, your coin may only be worth $5 while this coin will always be worth at least $20.
not saying its an investment coin but you're not losing anything by owning them either.

The good thing is that you didn't really spend anything on them. You just did a swap. You're not out any money, and you can spend your $20 coin anytime. Although legal tender, businesses may not take it, but you can always swap it at the bank. If you decide to keep it, it may appreciate in collector value.

+1 I don't think they care. Cause there's many more other products RCM sell that's beyond the price of legal tender / what its value at. If I'm not mistaken, I received points for the 3 x $20 I ordered last time.

I eneded up phoning in the order.

Found out the reason why some people get notification, while others don't. People who order more than $1000.00 in one calendar year become "Master Club" members. They get notices of new products before the general public. They also get codes for free shipping.

The shipping was $2.99, so it's not a big deal.

So, thanks, Sky_High , for the quick heads up....... another reason to be a happy RS member.

It's still legal tender, and when you're down and out (ya never know), you can get get back what you paid for. Being a collectible, you can probably get a bit more. I bet some RS'rs wouldn't mind having some, as all previous coins are completely sold out - even that fugly reindeer one, LOLOLOLOL.

how do you use this as face value?
I read that since it is "non circulating legal tender" (NCLT) bank will not exchange this and you can only exchange it at coin dealer or back to RCM

Presto
03-19-2013, 03:31 PM
Bank can exchange them:

All coins manufactured by the Mint are legal tender. However, unlike Canadian circulation coins, collector coins are non-circulating legal tender (NCLT). As such, these coins are not intended for daily commercial transactions and accepting them as payment or for redemption is at the discretion of businesses and financial institutions.

The Mint has a process in place to reimburse financial institutions the face value of redeemed NCLT coins, once they have accepted them from a customer and returned them to the Mint. In the event a bank branch is unaware of this procedure, customers are advised to contact the Mint with the coordinates of the bank branch, which will take steps to inform the branch of the redemption process.

As collector coins can only be redeemed at face value by businesses and financial institutions willing to accept them, it is recommended that individuals wishing to sell a collector coin first consult with a coin dealer, who is more likely to offer a price above face value.
http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/customer-service/faq-1100010#Q1a

If the bank doesn't take them. The Mint will send hired goons to the branch to straighten them out.

This reminds me of when I was young and collected odd looking coins. my parents rented our basement to this guy andy and he always had tons of change. He let me go through it and look for the cool stuff, I'd trade normal money for the cool shit. I remember I had a dozen of those dimes with the fish on them from 1967. Gave him a dime for them, they're worth about 1$ each at minimum. They can sell for up to 200$ if you get one with no wear, which was next to impossible. It can pay to look out for some of these coins and save them, especially the limited edition releases. Those month quarters are already gaining.

I got my $20 Wolf coins today.

The Purple Coneflower with Venetian Glass Butterfly - Mintage: 10000 (2013) is available soon but you gonna have to line up at the Mint store to get it since it's already sold out. Masterclub members who don't frequent coin forums didn't even get a chance to buy it. By the time MC members received the email it was already sold out.

As far as I know there has always been tax on all coins except precious metal coins that are 99% + or finer.

Well, the Mint has decided to take it to a whole new level, with a $100 for $100 silver coin.

This bison coin is part of a new series, so there are more to come :lawl:

I'd only get this one, since it's the first in the series. Despite it's price, it'll probably sell out fast. Personally, i think this is getting ridiculous. The mint is gettin' greedy.

Yup, getting ridiculous............. the same thing happened with stamps. I have been collecting stamps since I was 9 or 10 years old. Now, with so many commemorative stamps being issued every year, it doesn't make sense. The fun is taken out of it.

I actually prefer the $100 coin to the $20 coin because for one reason - you can rack up on credit cards rewards much quicker.

2% cash back on the the units I just order = free money from credit card company.

So... did you buy the "Subscription"? Or did you buy both? I only bought the subscription one, thinking it comes with the Iceberg coin already. I'm assuming the Santa coin will be sent out when it becomes available, and charge me automatically (since I subscribed).

Hi guys, not sure if you guys are still actively collecting these.

A while ago they had the 200 for 200 and some other ones that no one really posted about.

I've still been collecting these, and so far have them all I believe. Always buy 2 of each (one set for my dad).

Now they have a new 4 coin subscription, with the first coin as a 25 for 25 in COLOR! xD

2015 Canadian Silver Coin Subscription (http://www.mint.ca/store/coins/coin-prod2220078?lang=en_CA#.VGZaW8mnDF4)

Also really like the fact that they've been offering free shipping on all of these since a while ago now. So even without coupon codes etc, you're basically just trading money for exact value! No loss!

EDIT: added a photo of the current collection xD!
First 100 in the box at the top, with 3 other 100 coins below. Top right corner is the 200 coin, and below that is 2x 50 coins.
And the 14 at the bottom are the 20s. Sorry for crappy pic lol

There's a new $25 for $25 coin (http://www.mint.ca/store/coins/2015-canadian-silver-coin-subscription-prod2220078) coming out in 2015. It's going to be the Canadian Flag in full colour. You can't purchase it, yet, but you can pre-order through a subscription that includes that coin plus 3 upcoming $20 for $20 coins.

Anyways, this is the first of a new series (money grab), so it'll be worth the purchase. I just don't like that I have to subscribe to 3 more coins to pre-order it.
