A True Testament to Honda Reliability

So my wife has a 98 V6 Honda Accord with over 268,000 KM. Last night she called me from work saying that her car won't start. I am thinking worst case scenario here. That its finally time for this car to give in! With a baby on the way a new car expense was not something I was looking forward to. So I call BCAA for her to have it towed from her work to a mechanic but it turns out that her battery was the issue. Not a biggie issue that's a cheap replacement.
The amazing part here is that its the freaking original battery from when the car first rolled off the dealership lot! I was completely in shock! This car is 14 years old and the battery has lasted that long! Crazy!!

GO HONDA GO!... unfortunately i dont think they build cars like they used to ...while keeping costs down to compete, i'm sure there's been some cut corners.

I love Honda's.. but really in this case you should be praising the manufacturer of the battery lol.
Co-worker's 89 civic has over 400,000 km on it :spin:

my roomates 91 has 443,000km on original motor.. he only puts about 400$ into the car every 2 years. only burns a liter a month. its rusty, dented and ugly but it runs like a beaut.

I disagree, I have a 2003 [MFY 2002] Honda Accord Coupe V6 and after 10 years it still looks/drives like brand new. The only thing that broke in these ten years was one of my power door locks and that only cost a few hundred bucks to fix.
And I still get compliments on my "new" car every now and then.
I love Honda! :D
PS. I'm also still on my original battery.

My coworker has a Honda Accord, I'm not sure what year, but around 2000.
He's never done an oil change on it. The car maybe has had one oil change in it's life.
All he's ever done is add oil and it has over 280,000KM. He says it runs fine.
to me tho....

Semi off-topic,
but couldn't / shouldn't BCAA have detected it was the battery problem, before it was towed?

Sorry should have phrased it better. BCAA came and I thought they would need to tow it but he just jumped it for us.

Alternator was replaced 2 yrs ago and at that time Honda said the battery didn't need to be replaced

That's awesome!
Not to steal your thunder, yet with our mild weather batteries should last a long time. 14 tears is exceptional, yet we should all expect to get at least 10 years. I just replaced the battery in my GF's Volvo, almost 11yo. My battery is almost 10yo and going strong despite freezing winters and scorching summers in Ontario.

No I did not say it was a lot. I just mentioned the km's the vehicle has. I know there are vehicles with way more than mine.

No, the odometer stopped at 999,999 km's but the trip meter is still working. He manually switched it to mph mode to show that the odometer is still working.

My dad's car is an '04 and is close to 480,000 clicks and runs fine. Of course there's wear and tear stuff but it's been a great car for its mileage.
It all depends on the owner's care for the car, and of course luck is involved as well

i've seen lots of european manufactureres like Mercedes and BMW that are still running their original batteries.
My 95' 5 series had the original battery until 4 years ago.
My friends 96' 3 series still has the original battery.
I'm actually quite surprised because while working at a shop, the most common battery replacements are honda's (some models use VERY small batteries).
Good to hear yours is still doing well, honda makes great cars.

Funny you should mention that. I actually got two compliments the past two days on my '03 Accord from random people (guys, sadly :okay:) lol
However, I've had a shit load of problems with it. Second gear grenaded and destroyed half the transmission when the broken shards damaged the syncros, radio/HVAC control unit replaced twice, door locks stopped working, serp belt snapped, clutch pedal squeals like a stuck pig even after lubrication, shocks blew at 90k (which, I suppose, is "normal"), etc.
The sad thing is that this is the first car that I've tried to keep mechanically stock for as long as possible. Usually shit goes wrong once I start modifying it... not this time, though.

2006 Honda Civic passing 1,000,000 km - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og6KeRkiRUg)
that was an expensive dyno project. I doubt that was on the road, since the cruise control was on, and zero fluctuation of RPM for 3 mins.
1,000,000 kms % 700kms per tank = 1428 tank fulls
1428 x $60 = 85,XXX $ in fuel
1,000,000 kms % 5000km oil changes = 200
200 x $45 = $9000
1,000,000 kms % 100kms/h = 10,000 hours of dynoing
10,000 hours of continuous driving on dyno without consideration for pauses to do maintenance.
416 days of straight dynoing.

His job requires him to drive long distances on the highway each day, so he's not dynoing. There is a thread about him/car somewhere.

Guys legit, he is delivers medical equipment across states, but his engine has been swapped once (trying to fix a problem that the engine swap didn't solve.) His tranny grenaded at 300,000km I think.

I would say that the mid-80s to the late 90s was more or less the peak for Honda in terms of reliability.
I had an early 90s Integra for 10 years and it was fairly solid aside from a main fuel relay and brake master cylinder. They're actually very hard to "kill" unless you fail to replace the timing belt - usually rust gets to them first.
