Official "the new iPad" Thread...
dangonay

It's that time of the year again. Although iPad 3 rumors have been going on for months now, we're actually getting close to the usual time Apple announces its next iPad, with many rumors pointing to March 7th as a possible announcement date.
There seem to be far too many leaks this year with MacRumors actually getting their hands on a display panel and pictures of various parts including the logic board leaking out. Here are the two biggest ones so far...
Retina Display (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/23/ifixit-takes-a-closer-look-at-the-ipad-3-retina-display/)
A5X Processor (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/19/photo-of-ipad-3-logic-board-with-a5x-system-on-a-chip/)
So will we see a quad core processor? An upgraded version of the dual core the A5 now uses (maybe a die shrink and higher clock)? A dual core A15? The PS Vita uses the quad core version of the SGX543 in the A5, so will Apple also use the same quad core GPU?

03-07-2012, 09:34 AM
Well, it's official:
- Retina Display at 2,048 x 1,536 pixels.
- 44% greater color saturation.
- A5X Processor with new quad core GPU.
Keynote is still on-going so there may be a few more additions, but the Retina Display is the biggest news by far.

- Siri is confirmed, but looks like dictation only for now (WTF?).
- 4G LTE (Rogers, Bell, Telus)
- 1080P recording.
- New 5MP camera with ISP built into processor (they say same design as 4S so I guess they mean the lens and so on).
- Same battery life as before.
- Same pricing as iPad 2, available March 16th in Canada.

^ It's extremely impressive. For shits & giggles you should visit the liveblogs and read the comments. Basically the display is "yawn" or "unimpressive". I wonder what their point of reference is to call this display "unimpressive".
the display is impressive. everything else was just 1 notch above the old ipad which was expected.

Not at 2048x1536 resolution, but doesn't the Asus' Transformer already use retina display for their past few models?
transformer prime only has a 1280 x 800 display.
you can be sure that the next tabs will step it up greatly from here on.

so technically you can get the current one and do a software update right now to get the Apple TV third gen features

well it is in chip form, different. Interesting indeed
Looking at getting a new iPad, ipad 2 or 3?
IMO, unless you can get an iPad2 with heavy discount (maybe 200 for mint condition).. I wouldn't get iPad2.
The iPad2 16GB is $100 less than the new iPad. And that $100 gives you a screen that's 4X the resolution, more graphic power, 1MP (plain simple) vs. 5MP (backlit, image stabilization, autofocus... so on)... and more... the value is way more than 100.
I don't get Apple strategy anymore. I thought it would be great if they discount iPad2 down to $200 (with 8GB maybe) and clears the competition in low-end tablets... but at $400... the new Asus tablets or even Kindle offers much much more than iPad2 for cheaper price.

sooo...should we expect the usual? i.e long lineups, no stock for weeks, etc?
I doubt it. iPad launches are different then iPhone launches. With iPhone people take a long time becasue they're doing a hardware upgrade or whatever and that can take 30-90 minutes a person. With the iPad, lineup should move fast since you just go in, buy it, and leave. Shouldn't take more then 5-10 minutes. I'm sure there will be enough stock for everyone who wants one. I don't know anyone who currently has an iPad1 or iPad2 wanting to upgrade to a iPad3.

I don't know anyone who currently has an iPad1 or iPad2 wanting to upgrade to a iPad3.
I had the iPad 1. Sold it last week because I'm one of those people who are upgrading. The miniscule amount of memory on the 1st generation iPad was causing application crashes more often than I would like. The speed improvement alone is enough to justify the purchase. The Retina Display makes it even better.
Pre-ordered online, shipping to my workplace. By the time I get off work, I'm pretty sure the stock will be gone at the local Apple Store. Hope I get it on launch day!

What I am curious about is, if they quadrupled the resolution of the screen, they would also need to quadruple the fillrate specs of the GPU. And should probably quadruple the RAM as well. Did they do that?
^
Doubt that.
I don't think anything beyond 2D graphics would actually use the full resolution. From the experience of iPhone4, Apple would simply scale most of the stuff. Everything becomes crisper in a sense that they use more pixels to accomplish in the same area (in dimension, not pixels).

^ That's running Honeycomb not ICS which is faster. On paper the Tegra 3 should be about 2X as fast as an A5, however so far it's only testing about 1.5x as fast even with ICS. I think they need to come up with some better optimizations because it's not being utilized fully yet. And what good is a processor if the software isn't using all of it?

Looking at the specs its what people have leaked and what not so a lot of people are "wow"-ed by it, but look at it which tablet out there will have a better camera? better screen? yea I know android tab lets you do a whole bunch of stuff to it, root apps etc etc but ipad is for simple people who wanna play games, work and just have a "fun" device

Agreed. The Apple smart cover is useful. It's certainly not protective that's not what I bought it for.
The new iPad is a pretty decent upgrade. Who cares if the speed boost isn't significant enough. The screen alone is going to be worth it. Once you switched to an iPhone with Retina Display, it's so hard to look at a lower res screen. I just looked at my friend's iPhone 3G and oh my god. No way.

How many times have you looked at cell phones on display and thought "wow that screen looks great" only to realize it was a printed decal on the screen?
I bet the new iPad screen looks just like that - it'll look so good that people might think it's fake (decal) until they find out it's the actual screen.
The only good thing for the competition is that Apple displays in stores like Best Buy are separate from the other tablets. If you put it side-by-side with anything else, it would be like the 3G compared to the 4 (except even worse).

There are some iPad benchmarks leaking out, but nothing official so comparisons are going to be difficult until reviewers get their hands on them Friday. The processor should post similar numbers since it's clocked the same as the iPad 2. However, there appears to be 1GB RAM in this version. The GPU will be the one to watch.

We've just confirmed that although the new iPad has incredibly fast download and upload speeds over LTE, FaceTime video chat still won't work directly on the 4G network. As you can see in the positively vexing screenshot above, attempting to initiate a FaceTime call over LTE fails out with a message exhorting you to connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Like switching back and forth between apps. Every time I try to be productive with it, it ends up being frustrating. For instance I was helping someone proofread a presentation, so I was switching between the pdf file and the email. Every time I switched to the pdf, it would have to load the whole file over again. So that's like 5 seconds of lag for every app switch. Same thing happened to me while trying to switch between a stopwatch app and data entry.
The extra ram will help for sure. This stuff would have been literally impossible with the first iPad. The second can do it, but not productively. The third might be "better" due to finally having enough memory, but the fact is that the os is not intended for productivity, it's made to goof around with $1 apps.

It is VERY awesome at that. I have no problem saying that, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to do that! I use it for that all the time. My wife loves playing with it.

Here's my video of my 4S (as promised) and instead of switching between e-mail and a PDF I also threw in a third program, Keynote. Pay attention to the horrible load times for the second PDF and switching. It's unbearable to use.

What exactly are you confused about, Skinny? You said the iPad was useless for large documents, dangonay posted that it works fine for him, you failed him, then posted that he was basically making that up. He has now posted a video proving his point and basically told you to STFU, which seems reasonable given the evidence.

You complained it took 5 seconds to load the PDF every time you switched. I simply provided a sample that showed a PDF that was available instantly, along with an e-mail and Keynote that were also available instantly when task switching.
I suppose I could have composed an e-mail, edited the Keynote and stopped to proofread the PDF but that would have had no effect on the switching speed. Unless, of course, I waited for an hour or more and the App was purged from memory to do another task, but that's not really what you were talking about, right?

I just replicated the work I was trying to do, and put it on video. The pauses are not 5 seconds, they are 3 seconds going to email, and about 2 seconds when switching to the PDF. Doesn't sound like a lot, but when you are constantly switching back and forth trying to proofread, it is REALLY annoying. I will put it on youtube right now.
It is bad enough to be annoying, otherwise why would I have brought it up? You think I have something against the ipad or something? lol
It just isn't good for productivity, that's all I ever said. It is a toy. A really fucking cool toy, but a toy.
Will edit with video
Found your offer to make a video. Page 2 of the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 thread.
And regarding that quote, it wasn't an OFFER to make a video. I said I COULD if I WANTED. Obviously I didn't WANT to waste time making a video showing the ipad lagging while switching between browsing and reading, etc.
But since you made a video, and people are responding to it with thanks and stupid memes, I have to at least replicate the scenario I was discussing, since it was very specific, frustrating, and REAL unlike your stupid switching back and forth between apps, doing nothing else.
Here's the video, I tried to replicate the work I was doing, using the email app and the same PDF file. You can clearly see the 3 second pause going to email, and about 2 second pause going to the PDF. Imagine dealing with that about 20-30 times over an hour under a deadline. Not fun

^ First off, why were you doing something with a "one hour deadline" on an iPad instead of a PC?
Which iPad are you using? Which iOS version? JB'd or not? Would that PDF file be something I could download from a website somewhere, or is it confidential? I'm quite sure I know the reasons why your iPad is lagging (based on what I see in the video). I'm just not sure why it didn't occur to you.
I work with PDF's (technical PDF's mostly filled with drawings and wiring diagrams) all day long on my iPad at work. I also routinely switch to e-mail to send/receive e-mails regarding progress on jobs I'm doing along with a couple other Apps. I never experience anything like what you are showing.
So If I come on a forum and say the iPad is good for reading PDF's and sending e-mails, and someone else (you) comes on saying it's useless for that, who should they believe? The person who does the exact task your describing every single day, or the one who admits what they were doing was "very specific" (your words, not mine)?
This is the problem people have with your original post. You found a specific situation that didn't work for you and made a blanket statement that the iPad is useless for anything based on your example.

This is the problem people have with your original post. You found a specific situation that didn't work for you and made a blanket statement that the iPad is useless for anything based on your example.
I was traveling at the time, and didn't have time to do the work until the last minute before their deadline. It was just a favour, so I just stopped by at a coffee shop and did the proofreading for them on the ipad.
Specs, ipad 2, ios 5.1 (would have been 5 when I first did the work, in fact the OS upgrade may have helped eliminate a touch of lag, because it seemed like 5 seconds before, not 3 like in the video), not JB'd. The PDF is confidential...
The lagging is not unique to this file or my ipad. It happens on the device because there isn't enough memory, and the OS is not designed for quick task switching. It is what I have been saying all along since the ipad 1 (which was a LOT worse, and practically unusable). It is not something I made up to "bash" the ipad or you. I have NOTHING against the ipad or you. It is A PIECE OF HARDWARE. This is my OBJECTIVE opinion, based on EXPERIENCE. I know it is laggy, can demonstrate the lag, and most importantly, I know WHY it is laggy.
Yes, you can flip through apps quickly when everything is loaded in the 512MB of ram, and make it look fast. But when you try DOING STUFF at the same time, you WILL run into lag. It is not a subjective opinion, it is not "just me" it is based on the design of the hardware. It is a TOY. And like I keep saying so as not to offend people who for some reason take a personal stake in a brand or product, it does THAT THING quite well.
The lag is not "very specific" but in this case I can exactly recall what I was doing, and replicate it, because the task was specific. There are many other instances you can bring up where it is laggy due to hardware and software design, but I am not going to make a video about everything. You can try some things out for yourself, for instance try scrolling a half loaded web page or document. You can't do it, because 100% of the processor is used for the task of making scrolling seem smooth.
I make a blanket statement that the ipad 2 doesn't have enough RAM to be useful for general productivity. It might be fun to play around with games and watch videos, but try doing WORK on it, you will run into problem after problem due to lag. Whether it is this specific instance, or others (such as data entry). The more you TRY to do with it, the more you will run into problems.
If you don't run into these problems GREAT! FANTASTIC! You are using it how it is designed to be used - as a toy that is fun to play with. Even though they market it as a productivity tool, I bet less than 5% of the users actually use it for such things. And if they do, they will be unsatisfied as they run into issues with RAM, laggy OS, etc, as I have each time I try to be productive with it.

I just checked out the new iPad in a store, at least I think I did. I couldn't tell at all, except it heavier*. Though that could have been in my head, I am pretty sure it was the new one. You can't really notice a difference unless you stare at it really close. But as more apps make use of the higher resolution, that has to change.
*They had this cheap matte screen protector installed on it, which is certainly why I couldn't tell the difference immediately. I never understood why someone would want to ruin their awesome display with a screen protector, and that is especially the case here.

The screen protector always degrade the quality of the screen, especially those $5 for 2 film from china. I also checked out the new iPad at "Ultimate" in HK. The new iPad is slightly heavier, the weight just like an iPad2 with a smart cover, hands get tired easily compared to my TF201. They are showing a demo with some so-call super HD video, it is sick and smooth. I'd buy one if I had a iPad1.

Samsung Semi should thank Apple for the $11 billion in component sales this year alone. They should also thank Sharp for allowing them to use the patents so they would even be allowed to manufacture this screen (one patent is credited to Apples LCD engineer who developed it while at Sharp and was also the person who solved the yield issues).

This could not be truer. Considering how tough the glass is, putting a screen protector on the surface is just dumb.
I could instantly notice the heavier iPad, not so much the thickness. However the big differencne I could notice is the heat, the model was so warm. My iPad 2 never gets that warm.

Fuck, how fucking stupid are you? you can still sell it anywhere in China with mark up.
And if you're talking about NA, theirs still mark up for idiots, learn your shit before you talk.
ppl marking up the price doesn't mean ppl can sell it... hey i can mark up my iphone for $1000 does that mean i'll make a profit off it? just cause ppl mark up you'll assume there's a market for it.. most store u can still walk in and buy it.. sure there's still a "SMALL MARKET" in china, but with the abundance of stock and the lack of ppl actually buying it for themselves.. whatever profit you make off it isn't even worth the time.
Walked into rc apple store and picked one up today at around 2.30pm (still had quite a few at the back according to the guy that served me). After spending 2+ hours with it I got a stinky feeling I might return it. Was expecting to be completely blow away like the transition from ip3->ip4 but was not. To make matters worse its heavier and gets hot a lot quicker. Guess I'll stick with my 1/2 till 4 comes out.

Why would you expect to be blown away? It's basically the same thing with a higher DPI screen, which at the viewing distance of a tablet, means quite little...

"blown away" lol. The only way that could happen if it was half as thin as the iPad 2.

Their's still a small mark up regardless. Mr. Resident Bullshitter is claiming their is no mark up since "everywhere" still has stock. Not saying that theirs a HUGE HUGE market but mark-ups are there(regardless if it's $1 CAD or 3000+ RMB)and you will earn profit in China but is it worth the time?
If I had a flight back to China within 24hr of release date, I'd bring back a few iPad 3's with me, why not? I'm 100% sure I'd get more than what I paid for it and I was going back anyways, no extra effort or cost.

I wish you really did bring back some new ipads. So I could laugh how retarded you were!
there would be no way you'd get more than what you paid for. it cost at least $4500HKD to buy the cheapest ipad in canada, and the buy back price for a 16GB Wifi is at best at $3900.
yea, losing $600 per unit is great profit! :heckno:

Uhhh...$519 * 1.13 tax = $587 *6 = 3520 RMB
A quick search on TaoBao shows ALL iPad3's are selling above 3520 RMB..I really don't know where you're getting your info buddy...

^ our tax is only 12% :joy:
and the exchange rate is more near 1:6.4
I'm not sure how to use this TaoBao website...but you're looking at least $3750+ RMB as your raw cost.
SkinnyPupp
03-18-2012, 09:41 PM
6.4 is the middle rate. Buying or selling RMB would be more like 6.65 or so.
So 519 * 1.12 = 581 * 6.65 = $3865 COST
And they are selling in China for "above $3520" as you claim, which is still a significant LOSS on each item. Even if you were selling for $4000, it would hardly be worth the trouble of buying, transporting, taking the effort to sell...
They are in the $4400-4600 HKD range right now, which is around $3600 RMB. That is in stores... how much are they paying for them? Probably not much
The whole idea is stupid, Hyde is right this time.

LOL lowest price on TaoBao is 3900 RMB but alright guys. Let's drop this topic since the China resell market doesn't effect most of us. :)

Apple released sales figures. 3 million new iPads sold in the first week. I wonder how many iPad 2's they sold?

estimates for the ipad2 i read were only 500k-1million since apple didnt release them
my cousin helped his friend order 10 ipads (they arrived on friday)
when he dropped them off he says his buddy has 128 of them............. :rukidding: (the 64gb lte one) he's going to sell them in Russia says he makes around $100 from each one (although i read some articles saying they sell for far higher there)
but i dont know the new ipad doesnt seem to be in short supply wonder how he'll make out
SkinnyPupp
03-19-2012, 07:03 PM
Edit: Apple specifically stated that the number does not include pre orders. I guess there are a lot of people like this (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-57399321-64/some-people-dont-have-a-clue-as-to-why-they-need-the-new-ipad/) out there :fulloffuck:
I wonder if this boost will do a lot to slow down the loss of market share to Android tablets over a period of time. It is predicted that Android will hold over 50% market share by 2016, but for some reason that doesn't seem to consider Windows 8 tablets. Once Windows 8 tablets come out, things will be very interesting, because the gap between PC and tablet may finally start to be bridged.
Smart marketing, even though the only people who should give a damn are shareholders.

if someone makes an x86 win8 tablet with respectable specs im all over it
hopefully nokia or vaio does but i doubt it (nok seems to be stuck with mobile cpus and sonys stuck making android tablets)
as for apple sales not including pre-orders that seems doubtful doesnt it? 1million units a day for 3 days?:crazy2:
why dont they list sales including pre-orders then? (since pre-orders weren't shipped and CCs weren't charged until friday the 16th they probably counted pre-orders as sales for that day)
SkinnyPupp

There will be an ARM version of Win8 so you won't need x86 hardware to run it. this will be useful for the tab version
Here's the article (http://news.cnet.com/8301-27076_3-57400231-248/apple-3-million-ipads-sold-since-launch/) where Apple specifically states that the 3 million figure doesn't include preorders. It is mind blowing, considering that anecdotally the reaction doesn't seem as big as other launches.

Actually I just realized that the new ipad 3 launched in 10 countries this time, compared to the US only launch of the old ipad 2.. so it's somewhat believable that they sold 3 million "since launch"
but still... :fulloffuck:

Three million sales are not so hard to believe. Apple launched the iPad 2 while they were ramping up production which is why there were long waits. Estimates are it took them almost a month to hit one million iPad 2's.
They obviously learned their lesson and made sure to have plenty of stock on hand this time around.
All I can say is I'm feeling pretty good about betting the farm (time & money developing an App) on the iPad last year. Nothing like having tens of millions of potential customers.
Humm 3 Million sold....
Lines of Resellers Returning New iPads at Fifth Avenue Apple Store
Friday March 23, 2012 11:09 am PDT by Jordan Golson
A tipster sends us this tale of a trip to the Fifth Avenue Apple Store last night.
Went to the Fifth Ave store near midnight today, and saw that Apple was setting up a separate line just to handle the volume of iPad returns from Chinese resellers. The manager kept the separate line to ensure that regular customer's experience wasn't affected. Some people were returning up to 30.

Right now I'm using the OEM Apple Smart Cover and its working well for me. I've been looking for a case that similar to my OEM Blackberry Playbook Convertible case and recently found one. It called the Switcheasy Canvas case.

I bought this one - it looks pretty similar to what you posted:

Granted, you'll need to have it shipped to the US. I bought mine when they had it on sale for $10.

Got a case that looks exactly look like that at crystal today for $25! Pretty sweet.
Just one questions do you guys actually turn your IPad/Iphone off at all? Coz ever since I got my IPad I just left it on 24/7 same with my iphone lol(I had the phone for almost 2years lol). The reason I ask is that I notice the battery life of the iphone is getting shorter and shorter...... I basically have to charge it everyday now........
