Ya picked up one for about $86. About 6.5 pounds .... But for that price, and work I think it maybe worth it to go to a restaurant?

yeah totally true...I'd pay the extra so I dont have to do all the work....
Its nice to have it at home, but T&T king crab are usually fucked up in some sort of way....get it from a wholesaler...much better quality stuff.

a guy who used to be on these forums said that most restaurants will scam you at minimum, 3lbs. so you'd pay for a 10lb crab and they'd give you a 6.5.
10lb @ 10.99 at a restaurant (when crab is at its cheapest), is $110 + taxes, tips, etc...
really depends how you like to enjoy it imo. if you like it steamed and with just drawn butter, then buy it and do it at home. if you like it done 2-3 ways then go to a restaurant and pay the extra.

Ya, also hearing some scary stuff about T&T tanks being filled with some chemicals to make the seafood stay alive, and feel crunchy fresh when eating.. I'd love to find a wholesaler and get it direct... just don't know any.

That's true, we just steamed it with garlic, butter and lemons.. it was great, but I think I need better scissors to pre-open the shells before steaming. Almost busted the hand clamping down..
And true that about the scamming, just count the legs and make sure you get 6!
its not that they give you less legs, they cook you a smaller crab after they show you a big one.

exactly.. and also there are lots of other parts other than the legs you will know what I mean if you make it yourself. the other night I made it I had to split it into 4 big plates to steam. It was a 8 lb crab and it felt like it was as much as what i had at restaurants that claimed theirs was 12lbs. also i heard they swap some parts of the crab with cheap dead ones to create more plates to sell.

I bought a 12 pounder one year from the lobster man on Granville Island and it was 12 pounds when it was alive... I asked them to gut it for me because I didn't know how... the parts I was taking home weighed about 7 pounds so I don't think restaurants are ripping people off.

i think the point is that they will serve you a crab that has a lower total weight...

Yeah, I got your point earlier. I was saying that people would think that they're getting a smaller crab because what ends up on the plates doesn't equate to the whole crab. When you think of the logistics of a scam like this, it's very unlikely to be true... especially when you're serving the type of people who can smell a scam a mile away.
If you're really worried, take a picture of yourself holding the crab when they show it to you and compare the cooked crab with the one in the picture. Unless the crab is actually different, they're just rumors you're spreading.

unit is right...my family owns a restaurant, since they are into that business they've made friends with alot of other restaurant owners the past decade. its one of the most common tricks/scams pulled. the good ole switch-a-roo. dont be surprised if you get a dead one as well
my info comes from bigrig, who works in distributing seafood for higher end restaurants.
whether you choose to believe him is up to you, but he offered a lot of insider information which i dont really doubt.

I know a few restaurant owners as well and they tell me otherwise which is why I'm defending them. Not only do the logistics make something like this difficult, the math doesn't add up.
Using your example, let's say they swap out my 10 pounder for a 6.5 pounder... after gutting it, you're left with maybe 4.5 pounds... the cooking process pulls moisture out so the meat shrinks... what ends up on the table is maybe 3.5 pounds. Does that sound like enough to feed a table of 6ish people?
If i go out with my family of 4, we typically get a 5 pounder as it's enough to feed us all. So your informant says I'll get scammed minimum 3 pounds, I should've got a 2 pounder which I don't even think could be legally caught.
Not saying it doesn't happen but if this was as big a scam as people make it out to be, it'd be all over the news in a hurry.

I don't think it would apply to ALL cases (i.e. no profit would be made from scamming a dinky 5lb crab), but in cases where someone wanted a 12-14 lb crab, or two 12 lb crabs (let's say it's a big party), the resturant could get away with serving a 9 lb crab in leiu, and you could not tell the difference.

you are so right. buying a live crab from him is equal to paying for a crab at a restaurant that is cooked and served to you because lord knows everyone who buys a live crab has the know how and ability to cook it like that.
ive bought from him, and find him to be a trustworthy, and knowledgeable guy.
ps. after reading a few of his posts, he wasnt "pushing" his products. it was more like ppl here asking him about his product. also, im sure if he supplied that many places, which im sure he is because ive heard his company name within the chinese restaurant industry, a few sales from RS wouldnt benefit him that much. it sounds like he was offering his services and products as more of a favour to us here

Believe it or not, Chinese restaurants will scam you. Even if they don't do a switch-a-roo, they may tell you its a 12lb crab but realistically it may only be 10lbs. They may also weigh it in a tub with water, etc. There are lots of way to get you without you knowing, and if every restaurant is doing it to some extent, you won't know. Its harder to scam with smaller crabs, and I don't think that many sell 5lb crabs, they don't make profit that way.
Of course, there are restaurants that are more legit than others, and there are ones who are known to scam big time. If you want, you can go to a place where you know a manager well, they will wring out all the water THEN weigh it giving you a true weight of the crab.

godwin

Kirin etc are selling at 18ish a pound. So ymmv.
For Chinese restaurants, I think it is better to have at least 4-6 people to share a 12-15 pound crab?

Serious question,
Does anyone know what's the status of these crabs, are there an abundance or are they running out and being overfished? I just want check about this ethics wise before I chow down on a couple of these motherfuckers.
was just at dynasty on broadway, crab was $22/lb and the few they had were all reserved

i haven't heard of them being on the endangered list, and i see "alaskan king crab" being sold in normal grocery stores, so i don't think it would be an issue?

Dont go to Victory Seafood in Crystal Mall....total scam
I asked for a 10lb crab, there was only 4 of us, the waiter brings out a 13.5 lb crab and we go we want smaller, he goes smallest they have is 12.8...which is total total BS! I had King Crab 2 the week before in Richmond at Excelsior and the largest crab they had was 11.5. This place goes smallest they have is 12.8?!?!?!??!?
But I had a friend from out of town here so we went with it and of course I knew what they served me was less than 12.8....probably just around 10lbs.
Also when looking for where to go, the places that charge a really cheap price usually make you add more money to have it cooked 2, 3 or 4 ways.

The majority are red king crab are Paralithodes camtschaticus, the blue ones are Paralithodes platypus however the fisheries of that one has collapsed. I think the rest of the year are just Opies / spider crabs / Chionoecetes, which is not the same family as King Crabs. You can tell the difference by the shell.
