: Local Ghost Towns

So we're all familiar with Britannia, Three Valley Gap and Barkerville, but do we have any sort of ghost towns in BC (island included) that are basically just abandoned towns that aren't set up as a tourist destination?

I've done a quick search and looked briefly through Wiki's BC Ghost Town directory (List of ghost towns in British Columbia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ghost_towns_in_British_Columbia)) but I didn't really find anything i was looking for.

Any suggestions on places to check out?

im interested too.. sounds like it could be fun...

the one in maple ridge Webster's Corner, isnt really a ghost town, Googles street view shows an elementry school, so its not really a ghost town as its still have residents.. it just has some abandoned shops..

Do you want easily accessible or 4x4 only? Kettle Valley Railroad is quite interesting and easily accessible. There are a lot of abandoned settlements along the way eg Brookmere.

If you are interested in ghost towns in BC, do take a look into BC's mining and railway history. You will be able to find what you are looking for ;)

My general recommendation is bring supplies like harness, rope, first aid kits (do practice how to use them). Nothing is more frustrating than spending hours bush-wacking then figure out you can't get a good shot because you didn't bring proper supplies.

I used to live in a mining area south of nanaimo, and while traversing through the forest around my house I found an old school and some other stuff.. that was fascinating and kind of got me interested in history

Leechtown on the island isn't much more than a clearing now, there's no structures left.

I'd hardly consider Tulameen a ghost town either, people live there year round and the population gets huge in the summer.

That's a nice area for exploring. Nearby, you'll find an almost ghost town, Coalmont. Near that, there's a few ghost towns, like Granite City, and Blakeburn.

I wish we had a place like Salton City close by. seems like the coolest/eeriest place to take pictures.

+1 for the kettle valley railroad.

You guys talking about these ghost towns have me intriged. How off-road equipped does my truck need to be?
It sounds like it would be a neet trip to take the wife on in the summer.

In most cases no much on the automotive side.. however you should bring along decent amount of equipment like harness etc in case you want to scale things... CB radio is handy especially since a lot of these places won't have cell service... pretty much be prepared to extract yourself if you get stuck so a winch etc would be handy. I can't stress enough.. learn and practise how to use the equipment before you venture out to the boonies.

Recovery straps will be your friend, winches are cool but straps work just fine in most scenarios. That being said, the use of any sort of recovery equipment is all preventable. My driving style when I'm alone and when I'm with another truck are so completely different.

Most of the ghost towns for what I've seen are pretty much easily accessible off logging roads, the worst obstacles being cross ditches and over grown bushes (leading to custom pinstriping). Worst case being a wash out.

Ideally Im looking for a place that's relatively accessible by car, though I do have access to a 4x4 if necessary. I've been to Coalmont and Tullameen, but it was summer time and they were absolutely packed. I'll definitely check out the mining and railroad history for little known locations. Thanks everyone. :)

slightly unrelated but does anyone know of some cool local places for urban explorations? Abandoned factories, deserted schools etc. I found this page on wikipedia while readin about the skytrain tunnels downtown. Apparently back in the day when false creek was an industrial area the train yard on terminal went through a tunnel under downtown and connected with the railyard near the seabus. When they created the skytrain they used the old tunnel as a guideway. This is the old entrance which is now behind costco

how well do you know brittania?

I know of a lot of slightly less known stuff up there, not a chance of getting to most of it right now, but in the summer you can get there with a 2wd pick up (went last year with a 2wd titan)

i'll post some stuff, if you guys ever want someone to show you around a bit i'd be down to show you some things :)

hah this reminds me of highschool way back, couple of my friends and i had to make a video project for school which we needed an abandoned house for. We heard from people that there was a ghost town one right by womens corrections deep in maple ridge, 249th area

it was here, although google street doesnt go further in, its where the gate starts

Maple Ridge, BC, Canada - Google Maps

the background setting for our movie had to be during night time, so we were there at 3am like rebels. Of course there was a gate, but again, we were highschool rebels and went pass the gate, saw a cougar, no joke LOL, was pretty scared to shit, and the fact that it was right beside womens corrections made it even more eery at 3am, only thing we had was a flashlight off a shitty flip cell phone as well haha

but yeah aside from my coolstory, the place was gnarly, a huge mantion with a gate sitting there on the left side of the trail abandoned, and further in was bunch of abandoned shops and public washrooms lol wtf. The teacher was amazed at our video because of the perfect location for what we were doing but told us not to go again haha

the entrance of the trail that leads to the place notes no trespassing.. but for some reason no one really cared lol, i even went for a walk there with a girl cuz there was a waterfall, river and a nice scenary, saw random workers in the middle of the trail and they didnt care either lol. some people went off roading there as well

but that was 5 years ago, i'm sure things have probably changed now.

Some of my family moved to Vancouver from Bralorne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bralorne,_British_Columbia) after the gold mine shut down in the 70's.

It's pretty much a ghost town now, there is a few retirees there and a museum. Been a few years since I was there, wouldn't mind going back and checking it out.

I know back home in Kamloops, there's Padova, which I believe served as both an elementary school and a mental institution. It's pretty beat up now because kids always break in and wander around... It's completely deserted except for the odd bit of security keeping kids and bears out. I know my friend was shot at before because they thought he was a bear. It's a really interesting place to see though.

I heard lots of terrible things happen to the mentally ill in that facility
nothing haunted but would creep the shit outta me if I tried trespassing it knowing its history.

100% would be a wasted trip right now. last year i went camping this time of year up there and we hit snow before any of the cool stuff, The snow level is so low up here right now that we couldn't make it up without snowmobiles.

unless you'd want to hike in from where you hit 4' of snow :)

Yes, find a place that is lowered car friendly.

Coalmont and Tullameen are lowered car friendly. There's a long ass gravel/dirt road, but I did it back when my Accord was maybe two inches off the ground. You need to hit them during the off-season, though. The lakes around there get very popular during summer.

last time we went up was feb i was just told, so we might be better off now.

we had the titan running pretty well, in light snow, but we hit a 4' wall of snow right before the fun stuff, so if you can handle that, it will be fun. the cool stuff is hidden away though so bring boots!

Quesnel Forks is pretty sweet, has a cemetary and about 12 buildings in tact. The access is a gravel road, but it's car friendly and you can still pan for gold on the river bank.
