Hi guys, I am leaving on vacation for 1 month to Hong Kong, ive never really left the country with a phone before so I am not sure what I should do....If I take my phone with me, can I still keep it on over there without getting any long distance roaming charges if i dont pick up/or make any calls?...for example i leave it on and someone from canada calls me, i can see whos calling but if i dont pick up i dont get charged right?...also regarding data, should i turn it off or leave it on as long as i dont use it i wont be charged for it?....because i know imessage and whatsapp is done through data/wifi so i dont know how much a txt msg would cost through those, i honestly dont mind paying some money for being able to txt people through one of those avenues for the month I am there...anyone have any advice? thanks! I have a iphone 4 if that matters

Go to any convenience store and get a prepaid sim card as soon as you get there. Do NOT use your roaming data plan, it will be expensive. Three has the cheapest prepaid data plans with a daily cap, last I checked.

You can send LD SMS or a better idea would be to use Whatsapp which most people with smartphones should have

Turn off data roaming but keep the phone on, then connect to WiFi and use iMessage. Don't use roaming data because it's very expensive.

Make sure your phone is unlocked so you can put in a 3 card from HK.

When you arrive in hk, go to the airport 7-11 and buy a prepaid data sim. IIRC its across from McDonalds.

your phone is locked, buy a shitty phone in hk while youre at it and get the prepaid simcard there as well unless you have a buddy with a shitty unlocked phone to lend you

boo...so it my only reason is to use the phone to communicate with people here in canada (just through imessage or whats app)...and my phone is locked...no point in buying a cheap phone and sim card right?

If your phone is locked, then you will not be able to get a pp sim for voice or data. You will be usingyour iphone like an itouch - wifi. You can also buy pccw wifi. They have hotspots almost everywhere. (just a thought - never tried that)
