I'm looking for a 1-2TB HDD for under $120ish. I've picked and found 3. Dont know which one would be best bang for the buck atm.

So is WD better than seagate? Cuz there is a 1TB the same price as a seagate 2TB. both 7200 RPM

Many will swear by the WD Black. Personally, WD is sketchy because of all the weird-ass noises they make (loud clicking, whirring down, etc), but for some reason, my 2 infamous Hitachi 'Deathstars' haven't been a problem at all.


Try to get a Samsung Spinpoint F3 if you can.

WD parks it's head frequently and the whirring down is the power save. I've used nothing but WD for the past 10 years and haven't had any issues. Before that it was Seagate but I had a few problems with them. I'd skip the 1tb's if you're looking for lots of storage.

WD only for my NAS and external HD, I think it is silly to buy a HD at this moment unless it is necessary.

The Seagates are the cheapest large 7200 RPM drive out there now. The Transfer speeds benchmark very high (155MBps) but the seek times are slow (13ms). The Seagates are now made in China, so you will be getting the 1st goods from a new plant. The reviews at Newegg show the Seagate to have a bit higher failures. I installed and tested one of these drives, an I heard some noises that I've never heard before. The drives are still running fine.

Also, when would HDD prices be back to the price prior to the flood? I am only running on a 120GB SSD right now and dont know how much longer before it will fill up.

Seagate and Hitachi are cheaper ATM because theyre mfd. in China while everyone else is in Thailand

Estimates for the price to return to normal range from something like summer this yr to well into 2013. :(

for storage, go with a hitachi 3TB 5400rpm, or a WD green 2-3TB. but for the WD, turn off the head parking. i have 2x WD2TB and 1x HIT3TB and a SSD.

Articles say it will be at least end of this year. they are saying existing stocks (manufactured before the flood) are running low quickly even at this price level.

1TB of storage should be fine, but for the price would the 2tb one be better?

This is what I read from PC reports, WD plant in Thai resumed on 3rd week of January, Q1 supplies dropped 45% to 28.5million units. On Mar 6, WD made an agreement with Toshiba, WD will supply parts to Hitachi, sooner or later WD will complete the acquisition.

I don't think it matters or not the HD is made in China, as long as they are not putting parts together with human hands.
