Hey guys,

Anyone have any idea what material most OEM parts are made out of???

Sorry for the rather dumb question but I'm pretty curious about this and I can't find the answer anywhere.
From what I've gathered the three main materials are carbon fiber, fiberglass, and poly urethane.
Can anyone fill me in?
I'm pretty new to RS btw haha.

It's probably important to say what part you are referring to....

I don't see any OEM thermostats or alternators made of carbon fiber or fiberglass.

What parts are you looking for? And for your information, most parts won't be made out of carbon fiber....

well, to start off with, I don't think any OEM parts would be made of fibreglass...

In many cases, the same materials most aftermarket parts are made of...

If you're referring to interior parts, I'd say mainly PVC (and maybe PET?) plastic.

For mechanical parts and body, I'd say different grades of aluminum, steel, and other alloys as they see fit.

Depends on the car, if it's an import, the bodies are usually made from already rusting metal.

thanks... = =

I should have been more specific to the materials used in the body work for Japanese cars like Toyota, Honda and Nissan...

It's obvs a lot lighter than a full metal body. And I've actually read a thread that porsches use a high grade poly urathane material.

I don't think there are any OEM body parts made of fiberglass because it simply just cracks/breaks when under stress.

Corvettes used to be made of fiberglass composite.
