I realized it may be considered "spam" after I posted. I hope not, but if so I will edit my post asap so it does not include info about donations.

Not to be rude or anything but I always give money towards to help out a local family. In the past I have bought a goat for a African family and all that but being local you actually know where your money goes and when you have those people thank you it just means so much.
If the internet scams this day and age I don't trust my money going anywhere.

If the internet scams this day and age I don't trust my money going anywhere. | That is understandable, if there are any questions people are welcome to contact me personally. Also, there is an option on the website to start your own project to raise 10k!

dont want to sound like im thread crapping... but, why Kenya?
Its a prosperous country compared to its neighbours; its gdp has skyrocketed since independence, they're the economic hub for Africa basically (well east/central tbe)
and there's supposedly over 12,000 schools there already
although its a great cause it just seems like it would be better suited to be put elsewhere
but i dont really know the situation well hence the question

^Why you gotta crap on my thread? jkjk
Kenya is often chosen for projects like this because their government is much easier to deal with than other countries in the region. School staff and maintenance workers will be paid by the Kenyan government.
Believe me, the areas that the schools go into are all in desperate need of facilities. Kenya may be prosperous, but there are many people living in poverty. One could make the same argument for almost any region.. "Vancouver is a wealthy city, why should we help the downtown eastside?".

i know a group of buddies of mine heading to Eastern Botswana for 2-3 weeks to build an outreach centre for kids who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. They prepped for 8 months or so and took a sh*t load of shots to protect themselves from 'diseases' over there .
Amazing initiative tho.

So your going to spend $300 per person on the school and $2000 per person to fly out there? Instead of flying out there why not use the airfare money to build more schools?

Wait until you see the list of administration cost.
1) flight ticket for each co-ordinator
2) accommodation for them
3) dirty money to the corrupt officials
4) insurance
5) research fee
6) hiring gunmen to keep the group safe
7) more dirty money to the gunmen leader
8) staff entertainment fee (probably some kenya hookers)
It will end up 90% of the donation is gone to the admin cost. $1,000 should be the actual amount spent on building the school (that's why they chose Free the Child). Sorry. bad experience in the past, you can refer to my post below. http://www.revscene.net/forums/53134...light=donation |

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but we are dealing with a different organization here. You cannot assume that all charitable organizations do things the same way(providing your post is even remotely accurate in the first place).
I don't know if you are just trolling or actually serious with your list of administration costs, but I find it completely disrespectful to come into a thread like this and say that kind of shit. If you feel so strongly about your opinion then your are welcome to make another thread about it, no need to do it here.
None of the 10k goes to flight tickets, coordinators already live in Kenya. Most of them are volunteers btw. There are no bribes for a project like this..despite what you may think you know about the Kenyan people they actually want schools to be built the same as we do. There is no research fee, location is chosen by locals who know the area and are employed by government. There are no gunmen -_-, and certainly no hookers.
I'm surprised at the negative attitude here..I can assume those of you criticizing must really do a lot of philanthropy work, right? Sure all the donors could donate their flight tickets to other projects but people want to enjoy their lives, and if this is how they choose to do that who are you to criticize? Most people use up their vacation time or take time off work to do this. They could spend that $2k on a trip to Vegas or a new LV bag for their gf, or a new titanium exhaust or rims or some shit, but they choose to fly to fucking Africa and build a school for kids. Also, the project actually creates jobs - 8 of them.

I don't understand why people come to threads like this just to complain. Isn't ignoring this thread by its title easier?
To the OP:
This year I am participating in the ride to conquer cancer, riding my bike from Vancouver to Seattle. I've raised $1,800 within last month and counting.
Here is what I've experienced so far.
-Fundraising efforts should be targeted to people you know. I've had most luck asking for support from my friends.
-Emails are easy to ignore, a phone call is far better (with an email follow up)
-You'd be surprised as to who can donate and how much, so ask everyone you know.

They fly down and find an empty lot

It's like buying a light bulb for $2 and then paying someone $100 to watch you screw it in.

People are not required to go to Kenya, I would say most donors will probably not go. Those who choose to go, travel at their own expense because they want to go.
It's like saying to someone "oh you donated $300 to Africa, then took a vacation to Vegas? Why don't you give up your vacation to vegas so you can donate more money?" I'm quite sure you personally don't commit all of your disposable income to charity, am I right? You could look at this like a vacation with some awesome humanitarian work built into the itinerary(although it is def more work than vacation). How much time did you take from your last vacation to help other people?
Bottom line is these people are helping to make a difference in the lives of others. On top of that, some of them are choosing to give up other vacations/purchases so they can personally go to Kenya to help even further.
You are welcome to have your opinion, but I disagree with your analogy because at the end of the day these people choose to go, they are not paid to do so.

A would hate to give to an organization that provides education, but not purpose. Most people who become educated don't also become moral, since human greed is more powerful than whatever western ideals are intended to be taught.

I agree with you that education alone does not teach morals. However, I believe any good teacher will impart ethics and morals in addition to the abc's. In my opinion, we can still teach solid core values without religion.
