Vancouver cyclist sued by driver after collision - British Columbia - CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2012/03/10/bc-cyclist-sued-by-driver.html)

And the best part is... it's eco-weenie, cycle-nazi Geoff Meggs on the receiving end.

Vancouver city councillor and cycling advocate Geoff Meggs is being sued by a motorist for $5,000 after a collision that took place two years ago.

Meggs was hospitalized with damaged veterbrae after his bicycle collided with a Mercedes car near 51st and Granville in 2010. According to court documents filed by CBC, the car sustained damage to its front end and windshield.

The driver, Ruey-Ying Isabel Chen, is now accusing Meggs of being negligent and causing the accident.

Good, hope it sends a clear message out to all those other arrogant asshole cyclists they don't own the road.

I am a avid cyclist btw,I just can't stand assholes like these that give the good ones a bad name.

I don't have anything against cyclists that follow the rules of the road. But the ones I do have a problem with are:
-don't wear helmets
-run stop signs/rolling stops
-going faster than speed limit in 30 zones
-rides in the pedestrian walkways instead of waiting to turn left
-rings their bell so pedestrian need to GTFO of their way

Oh my wildest orgasm if icbc would be forced onto cyclists, more people would sue these fuckheads, some of them may even have to take a test and learn the right of way. Instead of setting up speed traps they could set up insurance checks at the next critical mass! I think I just blew my biggest load ever!

For me,my wildest orgasm would be hearing about a certain city council member get hit by a automobile while riding his bike.

One can only fream.

Or cyslists who ride in the middle of the sidewalk. I walk formt he skytrain to work and constantly there are cyclists who ride ont he sidewalk. They don't even slow down or stop when theyf ully saw I am walking towards them and look annoyed when i don't move out and make the stop or avoid my way.

Sorry but sidewalks are walking, not for riding on, ESPEICALLY whent here are bilke lanes on the other side of the road.

I cycle and I drive and motorists are, by far, the bigger assholes. Cyclists shouldn't ride on sidewalks but the ones that do often do it because being on the roadway is too scary for them.

I'd be interested in the specifics of this incident though.

I get pissed off when people are cycling down the road when there's a perfectly good street set up for bikes (with bike crossings/lights) just a block away running parallel.

One of the things I find most interesting is at the end of the article it says

“Personal injury lawyer Robyn Wishart says cyclists are rarely sued by drivers, but advised cyclists to carry homeowner's insurance”

Yet when the subject of having cyclists have insurance on bikes to protect themselves and those sharing the road with them comes up, cyclists freaks the fuck out.

As more cyclists are held accountable for their actions on the road, insurance seems like the next logical step. As cyclists themselves say “we are traffic too”. And they are right, and with being traffic on the road comes being properly insured in case of accidents.

^THIS.

A lot of them seem to assume that they only harm that could come to them is being hit by a car, and that the driver's insurance would then take care of them, especially because the driver is obviously the one at fault!

They don't consider the possibility of them hitting a pedestrian (and being caught)... or another bike... or being hit by another bike... or falling off a curb... or swerving into a building... any manner of things that can damaged bike and/or rider with nobody else to soak for coverage.

Insurance pays if you drive your car into a tree, doesn't it? Pays if you burn down your house. In both cases, of course, provided you didn't do it on purpose. Same would apply to running your bike into a solid object.

finally someone suing the cyclists, i too am fed up, especially when sometimes in downtown i get those "messenger" looking cyclists putting there hand against my car to rest. i even had a cyclist ride on the sidewalk with those side bags on the back and he did a turn and his bag hit my arm hard enough for me to turn my body 90 degrees, he was the one to say "watch it"

the only thing i am wondering is how will the asian lady win if there are no witnesses?

...on another note, is mindbomber on a rage fail or something? i see him failing half the posts on here

I can see what you mean but where does the line get drawn? Is a 5 year old whos learning how to bike going to have to get his bike insured?

^Bingo

If it's a kid farting around their block or at the park; or even adults farting around their block or park, then insurance or licensing shouldn't be required.
But if you're going to ride with CARS on busy city center roads, then we better be able to hold you accountable for when you don't follow the rules of the road or hit cars/people/things.

Ok, what about a 12 year old? Or a 15year old? I can tell you I was rippin around town on my bike when I was 12-15 years old. Insuring bikes just doesn't make sense in the big picture, plain and simple.

It does not matter if the person is cheap, generous, rich, poor, black, yellow, white, brown, male or female,if my vehicle sustained $5000 in damage due to a nazi cyclist and ICBC would not cover the damages,I would sue too.

Yes they are..., people can just jump out of the way, or the biker can well easily swerve around them.

Making them go beside a 70 km/h car is the dumbest idea ever.

While I agree it's the fact that people want the "right" to wander/walk around free as farts without a care in the world on a sidewalk. They want their kids to be able to run around like retards, old people to sleep walk and the average person to walk around with their eyes texting on their phone all while not being hit by cyclists!

It's funny because Sidewalks are meant for people. People who are standing on a sidewalk waiting for the bus shouldn't have to look both ways to see if a bike is coming at them.

I'm sure a lot of people will agree that having bikes on the road with cars isn't the safest thing I'm sure.... so Vancouver installs bike lanes - and everybody complains..... hahaha.
