: My odd project....

Hey, figured I might as well put this on here. It started out as a rusty Volvo amazon, and a sh!t kicked gross SC400. I cut them both in half, and turned them into one.

Why? I like vintage style, I like modern performance, and I like race cars.

Here goes:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/sc400.jpg

Sick smoke show:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/sicklexus.jpg

turned that into this in a couple days:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/sc400minimized.jpg

cut out the whole rear drive train and floor pan:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5165.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5167.jpg

Built a little subframe to match the width of the inside of the volvo rockers and to keep everything together.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5173.jpg

Had to shorten the lexus 3" to get the wheelbase perfect:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5175.jpg

More trimming and now they are one!

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5178.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5184.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5179.jpg

I am going to get the body dropped even more and build some fender flares sort of like this guy:

http://www.volvoadventures.com/122race3.jpg

Mini update, had a few hours on it.... managed to get it about 2.5" lower with dropping the body more. Next up is levelling, squaring, and basically making sure the body is back where it belongs.

I had some help :

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5191.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5195.jpg

After a couple week delay I got to here:

I have been really debating what to do for flares etc, and i hate the super high positive offset wheels on there.

These are some wheels I bought years ago that are doing nothing....

18x9.5 and 18x8.5 both +35 offset....If I have to get flares....I might as well get flares and build this thing to fit some tires. rears are 265 vs the stock lexus 205 or 225 whatever they were. Plus if I go this wide there is still room on the inside of the wheel to go in so I could in the future get some 11" wide wheels and some really fat tires if required as well as letting me fit almost any wheel style, the previous method only allowed me tuner type wheels.

Keep in mind this car is still jacked up like a 4x4 and it will be coming down 2" lower with coilovers and the flares will tuck the wheels nicely. So in total I have to cut 4" of the fender out to allow for 2" uptravel at its destined ride height.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5211.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5208.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5203.jpg

Onto the fenders, I went with pulled fenders, i just tacked the factory arch on to see what it would look like. I will find an arch off of some car at an auto wrecker that is about 2" wide and a bit bigger diameter.

I am going to alter both the curve of the pulled fender and the remaining curve on the body to make one gentle curve and blend it right in.

Im pretty excited about how its going to look.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5218.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5213.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5212.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5215.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5216.jpg

I ended up shaping a piece of plywood to make a mold to hold the sheet metal where i wanted it and forced it into position with various lengths of 2x4's on the back side. It worked really well.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_5221.jpg

the joys of sheet metal work:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/BWWelding.jpg

Rear end lowered to proper ride height, I just cut the springs for a quicky lower job, trimmed the fenders and now I can start on the wheel tubs. :)

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/lowered.jpg

Starting to look like a car again, and made some coilover adapters to ditch the stock strut things.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/246ffb06.jpg

Coilover adapters to fit the lexus rear lower control arm:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/5d0f50fd.jpg

First coat of blue stuff! Finally! Not looking forward to sanding most of it off.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/beaca849.jpg

Wheel tubs started:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/ab266c69.jpg

Figuring out where to mount the fuel cell:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/eda0598c.jpg

Once I'm happy with all the body and structural aspects it's moving to Independent Speed Shop to let Bill wire, plumb and make it run.

Yay Parts!!!

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/793bff0e.jpg

Did a bit of sanding to see what its gonna look like:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6247.jpg

Trunk done other than where the coilover mounts go...waiting for my DOM to come in:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6249.jpg

Ewwwwww, guess I have to build new rockers, and make them out of tube to make a perimeter frame now.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6269.jpg

Out with the old rusty sh!t:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6275.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6285.jpg

In with the new structural sh!t:

2x4 .120 wall, it will become my outer frame rail and something really solid to attach a cage too.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6282.jpg

Made new coilover mounts:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/IMG_6323.jpg

Then on to the pedal assembly,
This...

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/IMG_6311.jpg

to this...

to this...

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/IMG_6320.jpg

Oh and best find of the week, these zip disks are by far the best I've ever used. 7" costs only $4.14 at Raider. They cut FAST!!! and last a long ass time. Great value.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/IMG_6309.jpg

Pedals hung....

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6327.jpg

New plan for the crap I cut off:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6324.jpg

Yay paint.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6330.jpg

Ok....it has finally rolled out of the shop sprung on its own springs. F*ck what a great feeling. ;)

Some of Bill at Independent Speed shops work....making me nice brake lines, plumbing and wiring everything. Dash is not installed so all the switches and buttons are just dangling.

Hydraulic Hand Brake, I need to make the lever next:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6435.jpg

Got a bit of a start on the cage today, all 1.75" .095 wall DOM to be legal for CACC GT class. And yes that is Flux Core....I'm just tacking it with a lil welder cuz mines to big to drag into this part of the shop.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6481.jpg

Got it to fit ultra tight.

Good eye, it will be a multi purpose car.

Track stuff, solo, auto-x and lapping days at the various tracks in the PNW
Street legal and mostly daily driver
Casual drift car

I didn't want to be limited, it may not be the best at any of them, but I will be able to have fun at all of them.

I have to give a HUGE thanks to the man that made it Run, go, and stop.

Bill at Independent Speed Shop in Langley. He wired the 1UZ, wired the whole car beautifully, plumbed all the brake lines, the hydraulic hand brake, and basically made everything work.

If not for Bill, this project would be WAY behind, and lacking a ton of motivation. The guy is definitely one of the best around. He makes it look easy.

Thanks Bill!

Hey 616racing,

Could you please tell us a little about yourself if you wouldn't mind sharing? I am particularly interested in how to acquired the skills required to perform such a complicated job.

616racing
03-18-2012, 11:11 AM
I build ponds and waterfalls....drive machines....and use the power of the internets to learn stuff. I've been playing with metal for quite a while, learning as I go. Start off welding unimportant stuff....then when you know your welds don't break.... weld stuff like this:
http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/truck-jump.jpg

Because eventually you're going to end up like this:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/racephotocopy-2.jpg

And that sh!t better not break.

Little more detail in the glass fender creation:

Started with styrofoam and spray foam:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6500.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6498.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6499.jpg

Then many many layers of body filler to get the profile perfect.....then many coats of primer which gave me this plug:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6502.jpg

Wax it 10 times, add PVA mold release, then gel coat....then start laying glass and resin:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc202/Poopy62/Volvo%20122s/IMG_6505.jpg

after a few days of pissing around....its time to pop the mold:

Cuz I don't even know what plan i'm going with....

Ok, so I have this idea that if I go drifting in this car, I don't want to rebuild the 1/4 panels if I tap a wall.....

So I took what I know about building bumpers that survive short course racing....My truck bumpers are original, and I have personally destroyed or bent at least 3-4 rear bumpers from people in front of me

And applied it to this car, with a touch of hot rod, and a dash of concealment....

450hp /415ftlbs Toyota 2UZ out of a desert race truck. This one is fresh, the class it was in was a spec class, so it has a low compression ratio, and they had a rev limit of 6000rpm. The motor builder said there is lots more power if you could spin it to 7000. :) :) These motors were $20,000 each when new.....I got 2.5 of them for a song....

I will change it back to EFI and run a Haltech on it. Should be fun!!!
