| GOOD news for the new entrants in the wireless section Wireless market in Canada opens to new carriers - thestar.com
1 - Canadian Government sets cap on the new 700mhz spectrum and also for the 2500mhz spectrum.. which is good new for Wind, Mobi and Public. Canada's telecom sector now open to foreign cash
2 - Canadian Government opens foreign investment rules for new compants with less then 10% market revenue..
This is very exciting news... which means better service from Wind, Mobi and Public mobile and LOWER prices..
Looks like Winds LTE service will be coming SOOON...

I'm not really sure if this means better service and better pricing or simply more opportunities for small companies to like Wind to attract customers. These companies have cheap price plans but that is because they know that joining Wind comes at a cost; poor service. Increased service will likely result in increased price plans.
And in all honestly, we complain about our price plans here in Canada but if we look south of the border, it's clear that we've surpassed our American neighbours in coverage and affordability. No longer in the states can you get unlimited plans that are inexpensive unless you join a company like Cricket (their equivalent of Wind Mobile) which has an equal amount of network/service problems :S

even so, i think it'll definitely help with pricing because now the big 3 really do have to worry about competition

From the looks of it wind will probably be the only other provider besides TELUS, Bell and Rogers to be able to buy into the 700Mhz spectrum.
The article states "The changes to the auction rules will let at least four companies obtain spectrum in each of Canada’s 14 licence areas, effectively making one block available for one of the smaller players."
I dont think this news impacts the big three really at all.

It will make a difference in a variety of environments:
With these new foreign restrictions lifted, any player can come up in and scoop up all of the allocated 25% of spectrum, and compete against the big 3 for the other 75% in the "open" market, provided that it makes economic sense for the new entrant. China Telecom, China's state-owned telecommunication company has long set their eyes on Public Mobile and for global expansion. I will not be surprised if they try to set foot in the door considering that their capital is limitless.
With only 25% of the spectrum available for new carriers, there is only enough spectrum for 1 entrant to become a national carrier with LTE 700MHz, in addition to joining alliance with other regional carriers like MTS, Videotron, and SaskTel.
As much as Mobilicity and Wind had previously said that they won't bid unless there is a spectrum set-aside. They must and will bid, though one may possibly be merged with the other or hypothetically speaking, both may be acquired by a foreign company, and still don't make up 10% of the market share. A lot of possible outcomes can result from yesterday's announcement up to the auction. It will definitely be interesting to say the least.

The 700mhz spectrum is the money ball.. if Wind can take all of what they can, they can give the big 3 a run for the money... Mobi doesnt seem to have such a big investor backing them yet but Im sure there is something in the works... Quote:

I doubt they can compete on a national carrier level.. even they bough some 700mhz, it be difficult to cover canada.. thats if Wind/Mobi doesnt buy any 700mhz, but they be killing themselves if they dont bid...
It make more sense if China Telecom invested in Mobi or even have a dual partnership with the Egyptian owner and bring up Winds capital...

It make more sense if China Telecom invested in Mobi or even have a dual partnership with the Egyptian owner and bring up Winds capital... | I was only making a point that China Telecom was interested in Public Mobile, and that source was from last year. With the current rules in place, it changes EVERYTHING. If I were China Telecom, I'd buy out BOTH Wind and Mobilicity, then compete with Big 3. There's no point in acquiring a smaller player first then take on WindiCity. On the flipside, WIND might be able to get lots of investment from foreign players to buy out most of the 25% of spectrum. Who knows, it's like trying to forecast the weather, there are currently too many variables at play. Quote:

wouldn't be awesome if Wind received a capital infusion and outbid the big 3. that for sure would signal some serious price war coming up.
one can only dream.

What does foreign investment have to do with how well they do as a competitor to the market, especially up against the Big 3?
How does the 700Mhz spectrum determine whether or not it will help Wind or the other players? How does it help the consumer in the long run? | When Wind started, the big 3 were filing complaints that Winds mayor ownership was not of Canadian origin.. so for the the majority of their first year was lagging because they were also battling CRTC for this reason..
Winds source of income came from an Egyptian telecom giant.
the 700mhz spectrum is sought as the best spectrum as its a low frequency that can penetrate buildings better.. the main reason why the big 3 has good coverage is their 850/900 mhz spectrum while Wind/Mobi runs it on 1700mhz...
If Mobi doesnt come up with a big investor, im sure Wind will grab as much as they can...

The new rules restricts a foreign player from acquiring a company that exceed 10% market share. It doesn't say the foreign-acquired business cannot organically grow over 10% market share.
