Anyone else get sleep paralysis?

This is a new thread, started from discussion in another thread.
Sleep paralysis is a relatively common (apparently) phenomenon in which a person becomes physically unable to move while half awake and half asleep.
It's often a pretty terrifying experience, and people report seeing shadowy figures and hearing noises.
I personally have had it happen quite a few times. Anyone else?

Happened to me a couple of times when I was extremely stressed/lack of sleep, but instead of seeing shadowing ghosts I was fully awake but could not move. For those few seconds I felt like those people who were operated on fully away but could not move.

Happened to me once, and luckily i had read about it somewhere so i kinda knew what was happening. I didnt panic, just waited a minute and it subsided. I did not see shadows or shapes and i do not envy those that do.

happened to me a bunch of times before. worst feeling ever when u cant FUCKING move a single muscle and all u do is struggle
my brother's friends and I know these as spirit holds. we believe them to be spirits/demons that are fucking with you, doesn't help that it's happened to all of us between 3am and 4am.
i cried the first time i got it, maybe i was 16? now i go through the motions of terror, anger and defiance. just gotta be brave and stand up to whatever you may believe it is, and it'll usually back off.
i figure it must be related to when Alpha_v2 talks about astral planing. possibly you're doing it but haven't fully separated yourself from your body yet... would explain the shadows and such. i have yet to organize my thoughts on this subject though, don't really know too much about it yet.

A few years back I had one of these figures touch me. I have noticed a trend that they only appear when my bedroom door is completely shut. The event was so vivid I still remember it to this day. In the middle of the night, perhaps around 3 or 4am, I was sudden awaken to sleep paralysis, can't move, can't scream, can't open my eyes. I felt these long prickly fingers (like tree branch) running up from the side of my back up all the way to the side of my cheeks. I woke up sweating and my heart was racing. Needless to say many bricks were shat. Other encounters includes the buzzing noise of locust (this one is reoccurring) and dark figure walking out of my room. Because of these pants shitting events, I have more or less trained myself to force my way out of sleep paralysis. First thing I do is to do not panic, because when fear takes over, you are fucked. Next, really try hard and concentrate on moving your finger or toes, once you have any of them moved you are free. The most fucked up thing with these dark figures is that they slowly fade away when I am about to break out of the sleep paralysis, as opposed to suddenly disappearing.
repost my experience from fucked up shit thread.
Another time when I was trying to let myself fall into sleep paralysis, I felt my body floating upwards, perhaps half a meter away from my body, then I didn't like that feeling I felt myself sinking back into the bed again. Some whacky stuff.
What the fuck spirits and demons. I dont remember seeing any dark shadowy figures and dont think i want to remember...

just had sleep paralysis 3 times on monday. i either had a one day cold or it was just really bad allergies but that night i could not sleep and was sniffling all over the place in my bed. all of a sudden i stop breathing and can't move a muscle. fought so hard to break out of it. went to go blow my nose and went back to bed. happened again. so scary!

Not so much spirits or dark figure as your brain playing mind tricks. The fear manifests in to such, i guess.

i'm thinking these shadows may be associated by the fact that when you wake up during this rem stage a part of the brain that is connected to fear kicks in..
but what makes it interesting is that some people see these even after they're out of sp, and it's kind of the same experience to people

HAHA yeah you will try talking or yelling but you wont be able to make a sound i tried it, you just have to close your eyes and stay calm and youll wake up.
there are times where i take a nap and like 1 min in i feel like i went into SP..
im awake but i cant move i can feel something watching me sometimes i see it. but i nvr nvr hear sounds...
for those of you who hear shit what do you hear? i just see dark figures...
i also believe in that curse demon stuff ,.. thats why i have protection tattoos.
im curious to know what made you believe? is there proof of demonic possession? do you believe in the board game ouji? iv played it many times but i think its either my friends moving it or the nerves of everyone moving it
it used to happen to me quite frequently back home. I started experiencing SP after my friend told me about her experiences. I was like "lol ok der" but then it began to happen to me. She heard voices of some woman but fortunately I never have.
1st time it happened I remember seeing a static screen from a TV or something with the noise (I don't have a tv in my room). Another time I saw some sort of figure, which at the time didn't scare me as much as it does now just thinking about it. It feels like something huge is sitting on you rendering completely immobile. If I snap out of it and fall asleep in the same position, it happens again so I usually roll over to the other side.

It's happened to me quite a bit, my psychology professor said it was something to do with your spine not connecting with your brain which is why you become paralyzed. I don't really remember the exact term used since it was about 4 years ago.

Been happening to me every night for months.
I'd fall asleep and notice that I'm dreaming and that's when the nightmare starts. I'd get an eerie vibe in my dream and sooner than I'd imagine it's a full blown nightmare. A few moments later I'd wake up but can't move I used to try breaking free but I can only jolt my body.. and whenever I do move it feels like I'm being pulled down and like someone's shaking whatever I'm trying to move.
I remember my first time having sleep paralysis, when I was 15, I woke up while sleeping on my side and I remember seeing the back of a cut and beat up girl on my bed, and she turned around and it looked like the girl from the exorcist. Scared me shitless.
Lately I've been trying to fall back asleep when in SP, even trying to control my thoughts. I've never been able to fall asleep until I burst my way out of it. What I try to think about whenever I'm in SP is my pet fish. It works sometimes, but sometimes you just can't kick the fear :(

Very easy fix for this. Sleep on your sides only. Don't sleep facing up. Use to get it all the time when I was younger but I read online that if you sleep on your sides it will go away..and it did.

Since I was a kid I've been getting this. It's usually one shadow, but sometimes there are more.
It starts by me waking up in the middle of the night - even if I sleep on my side (which I do), sometime during sleep I manage to flip onto my back. The feeling starts in my chest - if feels like i'm kind of stalling a car, like when you don't give enough gas when letting the clutch out. Then there's this sudden stillness, like the car has stalled, then a rushing sound in my ears. Thats usually when panic sets in.
The shadow dude crawls up the walls, and movements are very jerky and sped-up.
It always comes up to me, while I'm paralyzed and freaking the fuck out, and puts a really heavy hand on me and starts talking in my ear. It feels like lead. I have no idea what it says - it's never English.
As I got older I became more irritated with it - like if you want to fucking talk to me, lets talk. Don't just show up when I'm paralyzed you asshole.
I know it's not a 'demon,' but it is something. I get this odd feeling that I know it, like it's a part of me. But who knows. It's something I've been trying to figure out my whole life.

***RELIGIOUS/SPIRITUAL SPOILER: Don't even bother trying to get into a debate over this. I'm just sharing my experience.**
I don't know really where to begin with this, so forgive my rambling. My wife gets disturbed when she sleeps. More specifically, she gets harassed by demons. This has been happening her whole life, but it's been getting better since I met her, and hooked her back up with church. As a teenager, it got so bad, she even tried to kill her self by ODing on painkillers.
Her family thinks it's something medical/mental, and has tried to get her on anti-depressants. She thinks it's when her sister got her to play with the Ouija board, and that opened up a door. As soon as she slipped into sleep, that was when the craziness starts happening. Vile, perverted creatures attempt to tell her lies, and just make her feel like shit. Over the years, she's come to recognize their voices. It's usually a female demon trying to sexually harass her, or whisper falsehoods in her ear. She'd sleep on her stomach because being on her back makes her vulnerable to their attacks.
When first met my wife, she was getting into the new age bullshit, in an attempt to rid herself of these spirits. The new age stuff seemed nonthreatening to us as Christians. There would be references to the saints and angels, but it turns out that stuff is just trickery to make you think it's Good, when in actuality, it's evil as fuck.
Things seemed to get better, initially. She'd call upon the protection of the 'angels', when she was threatened in her sleep, and would be seemingly protected by an 'angel'. Nope, it was a masquerading demon. It got to a point where she was being clawed as she slept. She called me in a panic, one Sunday morning. I could sense the fear in her voice, and rushed out to pick her up. I didn't really have any plan, other than to get to church to see if we could get some help there.
We tried the big church in Langley, as it was closest, but we couldn't find anyone. So, I took her to my home church in Aldergrove. I knew the pastor, and he had similar, personal experiences with these attacks. He prayed for her, and gave her some tips on brushing away the evil spirits, like calling upon the name of Jesus. The demons hate that, so much. We destroyed all of her new age crap, which she spent almost 1000 bucks on.
About 2 years later, my wife is doing a lot better. She still gets harassed, but nothing near the magnitude she's experienced, before. Instead of fear, her reaction is annoyance at such pathetic attempts to threaten her. She even sleeps on her back. At this point, she is building up her faith and trust in God, and I am confident her sleep will, one day, be demon free. She gets impatient on the progress, from time to time, but I don't think 23 years of harassment can be smoothed over so easily.
TLDR: Demon problems? Call Jesus!

Presto: does it happen only in sleep? I'm certainly not knocking the fact that you went to your pastor, and I think that his suggestions as well as keeping up solid faith practice will be instrumental in helping your wife in the long run.
However, I would also consider speaking to a doctor, as this sounds like it could be schizophrenia. Not so that they can medicate it (the family already seems to have suggested or even pushed for this), but maybe a doctor can recommend a good counselor that is experienced with these kinds of episodes, and could help in addition to faith practice. Has your wife seen one for this?
Am I off base here?

Presto, I can believe this fully. I know of people who've seen inhuman hand marks that appear to be dragged along their mirrors/windows and even shadows standing over their bed staring down at them. My sister in law is friends with someone who has been clawed all over her legs and stomach in her sleep, while her husband is sleeping next to her.
Out of my friends/acquaintances, I find demons/evil spirits prey on those who are more likely to be fearful because it conveys the possibility of weakness. The faith and trust does help immensely and strengthens our resolves to fight this. I'm so happy to hear your wife is doing better!!

A good friend of mine has been seeing them since he was a child too. They always have red eyes for him (which is apparently relatively common when you see these kinds of shadow things).
He learned to live with it, but it's no doubt difficult.
I wonder what the level of harm aside from psychological these 'entities' - if indeed that's what they are - can do to a person.

It's not schizophrenia. It only happens when she sleeps. When she's awake, she's fine. It's not something that can be resolved with drugs or therapy. She's been down that route, and while it does dull things, it just attempts to quell the symptoms and not solve the actual problem.
Unfortunately, there's stuff in this world that can't be explained through cold, absolute science. I have had some experience with demonic attacks in my dreams, and there wasn't any doubt that this was something for my pastor to assist with.

I've had this too, the most fucked thing was sometimes when I'de snap out of it I'de be laying flat on my back, legs straight together with my arms crossed over my chest like I just got pulled out of a coffin. It started with shadowy figures, they'd just linger around as if they were staring at me.
The worst was when I woke from one of these episodes, calmed down I suppose I fell back asleep only to enter another one except this time I could move and as I turned over in my bed I watched a black shadowed hand caress my head.
I trained myself to prepare for these episodes and usually it would just start with 5seconds of extreme terror that I'de change into extreme anger and hatred towards them, and they left me alone.
The thing is looking back, they never tried in any way or form to harm me/scare me, it was only I that was afraid of the unknown, I feel like they may have been good spirits but they no longer visit anymore.

Just had one of these happened to me last night, I found it quiet hilarious though. This young Korean girl, kinda of like the one from the ring was sitting by the side of my bed, face pale, eyes all dilated, just staring at me like I am supposed to freak out. I started laughing because she looked ridiculous! Then I just woke up. Not sure why the girl Korean, probably because I am in Korea right now.

I had it one night a few years back.
I couldn't move anything but my eyes, and heard something banging rapidly on my front door. Then I heard the front door blast open, and something running towards my bedroom (I could hear each foot step loudly). Staring through my bedroom doorway in fear, I was not able move. I felt helpless. Just as the intruder was about to enter, the bedroom door slams shuts and I immediatly wake. The slamming of the door was the loudest thing I have ever heard, and one of the scariest things I've experienced. It felt very real. Thankfully I have yet to have another case of sleep paralysis. Any ever had a lucid dream before?

I'm glad to hear it's not just me.
There's one more thing I will add - before I started seeing these shadows during sleep paralysis, they used to come to me in nightmares. I'm certain it's the same 'thing' because it would speak to me in the same way, right before I'd wake up. I would also feel the sensation of being held down. These nightmares would happen for 4-5 nights in a row then stop for a while. They happened when I was 5 or 6 years old, and I didn't start getting sleep paralysis until I was much older.
Most terrifying shit ever as a kid. Especially since I'd become 'lucid' in the dream, and get that 'oh shit, any time now, he's going to come.' And then sure enough he would.
I'd even try to trick it sometimes, but it never worked.

Note: this thread is seeing a lot of demon/spirit talk...this has nothing(as far as I know) to do with my experience...
I haven't had SP for a while, but I remember when I once did. I was dreaming normally, when it slowly took a turn, and became a nightmare. After some time I became aware of it being a dream. Unfortunately, at that point in the dream I was bound/tied up and something was approaching me, my awareness of it being a dream caused me to wake up...but the physical restraint and the "monster" "followed" me.
It was so fucked up... I remember waking up, coming down from my nightmare adrenaline, only to realize this dark shadowy figure was in my room...At which point my body tensed from trying to move and my pupils constricted to the point where everything starred to blur. The fear I felt then, is probably the only time I've felt actual terror(not just being dramatic). I got out of it by taking in a huge breath of air(felt like Neo when the world warps around him after getting up from agent smith's gunshot wounds)....
Afterwards, I laughed about to myself. It's scary as fuck, but at the same time it's a kinda scare you can't get anywhere else...

^ I didn't even get a chance to think that... Two words come to mind when I describe that feeling: dread and terror. Don't get me wrong it doesn't haunt me or anything, but looking back on that feeling, it's incredible to think that I had those kinds of emotions for something that wasn't even real. There was no life flashing before your eyes, or reflection...just fucking terror.
Haha, I posted my original post while trying to go to sleep....had to shadow proof my room by closing my door and closet....
Anyone sleep walk? I've been told by my family members that I used to sleep walk and I would be totally oblivious of it. Now, when I have dreams I'm scared that whatever I do is actually related to real life (scared im sleep walking IRL during dream)..

That could explain werid occurances if you had some ? I sleep talk! A lot before and my brother use to sit and listen to me talk and figure out what I'm saying... I realized it was thoughts I never said during the day and I say it when I sleep ! :/ just random thoughts very odd ! After years of knowing people with SP, and reading threads, I finally just had my first one.
Very weird. A lot had to do with my dad, who recently passed away. It was also a lucid dream too. Once I realized it was a lucid dream, I did fun things like fly, and I also managed to do some dirty things with a girl I imagined. Then I was told there are going to be ppl sitting on my chest. That's where I thought of things I read online, to remain calm, and it was like I had a view of me sleeping. I head voices too. I tried moving my limbs but I couldn't. Then I snapped out of it.
Do all SP dreams come with lucid abilities?

I get them when I mess around with noo-tropics sometimes. Not sure if there is any correlation.. any opinions?

i can't imagine what it'd be like to wake up and have a girl like the grudge staring at you.. fuck
Back when I was in gr6, had my first sp experience. I was laying on my side, woke up like my head and upper body raised kind of like a "side plank" and felt something slowly pull my blanket half off my body. Then I saw my closet door slowly open and a black ball shadow was bouncing all around my wall for a few seconds, then went back in my closet and it closed. After that I felt like i left my body and because I was laying on my side I saw what looked just like the grudge girl behind me, slowly raising from the side of my bed. Throughout that whole "dream" I was trying to scream for help, but I of course couldn't. Weird thing is that it happened during the day when I was home alone. I was sleeping cause I was jet lagged lol. Scariest shit ever happening when you're a kid.
Another time I felt like i was being pulled out of my body and into a portal or something above me. The voices i would hear sounded demonic, but I was just so sick of having these dreams so often growing up, that I was trying to fight it, like I was threatening these spirits saying, "Fuck you bitch" then it sort of backed off and i felt like it was trying to throw me off my bed and then i woke up lol.
It happens to me less now, but when it does, I'm not usually very afraid anymore. I don't see things, rarely hear anything now, but i get that paralyzed feeling. I can usually break free from it, sometimes it even feels good though and I just let it happen to see what would happen this time
