Oh, hello there...this is an entire thread for me to post some culinary bow-chicka-wow-wowwwww from my food blog, EdEats.com (http://edeats.com)

So I've split the old thread into two since that contest has been over for a long time now. Thank you so much for everything during the competition, REVscene. You can see all the old posts here: http://www.revscene.net/forums/686641-richmond-365-days-dining-contest-thanks-voting-everyone.html

=====

If Brent (owner) is there, tell him how you found the restaurant on my blog. He'd get a kick out of it. Super nice guy. He might not remember...he had like 20 other bloggers to talk to that night but he'd appreciate that the media invite got him at least one customer. :lol

The steak is good. The coq au vin is good as well. The lasagna is okay and is large enough to feed three. Not kidding. The other one that I've heard is good is the pulled pork sandwich. Haven't tried so I don't know that last one.

My girlfriend is the manager at Catch 122 - pulled pork sandwich is really good! I'd also recommend the cajun chicken sandwich.

I don't understand why people are making such a big deal about the farmer's market thing?

It is suppose to appeal to tourist, right? Tourists to Richmond? If I was spend a week in Richmond....or even if I had a layover at YVR for 5-6 hours, I would think about going to a Farmer's Market and buying some locally produced food for a picnic, etc.

Think about...grab some great fresh items and go and watch the planes land...or have a picnic at Minoru Park...or at a table along the river in Steveston...sounds good to me.

Those things aren't as fun as getting real food in Richmond. If I'm going to watch planes or something, I'm getting takeout from HK BBQ Master or something.

The best reason to do the bread, meat and cheese thing is because damned near every farm in the French or Italian countryside is going to be making just silly amazing things for a few euros. Many bakeries and cheese shops in Paris are decades or centuries old...and more importantly, buying artisan quality things like that cost next to nothing compared to dining at a restaurant. I've done it. My friends and I probably survived an entire week off nothing but baguettes and various cured meats and sausages while we backpacked in France. You can get great stuff anywhere. Of course there will be those places that have a thousand years or whatever of tradition that have lineups and high prices but you can go into just about any bakery that isn't some kind of franchise and they'll be little family owned operations baking fresh daily or a butcher that curates a collection of a hundred different hams.

Here is the exact opposite. You can get a delicious meal at a sit down restaurant for peanuts while if you search for a "special" bread or proscuitto or brie around here...well, most cured meats and fine cheeses are imported and expensive. There aren't many fresh breadmakers apart from Cobs. For example, a loaf of bread at that Romania Country Bread place in Steveston is $11!

...the same price as a rib eye steak, a pork chop, spaghetti, veggies, soup and a drink with tax and tip at a HK style cafe. :fullofwin:

I f'n LOVE proscuitto, crusty bread, mustard and just about any cheese but we don't live in Provence or Tuscany. To me, those things aren't interesting enough by themselves here...and by that I mean, I'll still eat them but I don't know what I'd write about.

I live in the lower mainland and I avoid Richmond like the plague, shitty drivers, horrible traffic and the "honger" lifestyle just isn't my thing. I only venture into Richmond to go to YVR. All I will say is this, reading this girls blog does not make me want to visit Richmond 1 bit, but reading Ronin's blog and his photos kinda makes me want to consider venturing into Richmond despite my hatred for Richmond to try some of those restaurants he's reviewed there.

I've been getting quite fancy pants with the food lately like expensive steaks and fois gras sushi but I'm going old school with tomorrow's post.

http://ededition.com/blogpics/hingloon-4.jpg

One of the dishes that reminds me most of my childhood. I remember always ordering minced beef on rice at Maxim's in Chinatown growing up. Sometimes I'd get the "Western style", which was more of a tomato base rather than soy and corn starch.

Also, the first of a few Seattle restaurants I've got on deck. One of the better Chinese restaurants in Seattle.

7seven, if you are a foodie, by skipping Richmond, you are seriously missing out.
However, if not for the food, what's the point? :p

I don't get why everybody is complaining.
It's a food journey. It's not like she's not talking about the foods and atmosphere of what she's discovering.
I expect it to it to get better.

I took it for the team guys ...

Decided to try that new Crawfish place on Main street ... and regretting it ... it's not as bad as Crawfish King (service was definitely 100x better) but it was still overpriced and the fact that they loaded a bunch of empty shells into my Garlic Butter Clam bag with no meat didn't help ... also the Crawfish bag had way more CLAWS then tails in there ... and considering they charge by the pound... :suspicious: ... basically paid over a hundred bucks and left hungry ... had to grab a burger afterwards

The only dish that somewhat saved the meal was the Cod Nuggets. they were really good, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The Deep Fried Oysters were SAD AS HELL ... looked like shrivelled up fried testicles ... and tasted really fishy ...
Also they charge for corn and sausages as well. Don't be fooled though, it says "3 pieces of corn" on the menu but it's literally only a 2 inch block of corn and we ordered 6 but I'm pretty sure we only got 4 pieces ... oh and the sausage is even more ridiculous, it's 6 pieces for $3.99 or something like that, but it's not even ONE sausage, it's almost 1 sausage CUT INTO 6 pieces!... so you get 6 sashimi-thin slices of sausage in your oily bag of shellfish.
Another note is that we found a whole lotta clam shells, but no clams ... we thought they must have fell out during the tossing and cooking process ... but nope, none were to be found in the bag either ... so we paid for a bunch of shells.
The oil level is not nearly as bad as Crawfish King so that's a positive, and the service was a billion times better... although it would be impossible to be any worse than them.

Worth a read, basically took the words out of my mouth and onto his blog:

I'm at this place now and it isn't the same as the one that used to be beside save-on. No $1.99 tan tan noodles ($3.95) and the lunch specials are very different. People aren't the same either.

Ronin
11-23-2012, 11:18 AM
It has massage rooms?! Weird but...I guess that's par for the course as this restaurant is weird.

Basically, my experience is summed up with decent but boring food served by a wait staff that doesn't speak enough English to understand the English menu and they're constantly over your shoulder. Awful service...I won't go back.

I went there before a couple months back, I think I had a Groupon.

Decor was definitely unique and not too shabby, looks like the owner (who I heard is some Taiwanese tycoon) is pretty well off, spent quite a bit to spruce the place up.
A shame though as the food was really boring and plani... Western style food prepared by untrained Asian chefs ...
We were also the only table in there for the majority of the meal so the 3 ill-trained hong kong waitresses just stood by the bar chatting.

Remember you get double the noodles with tsukemen so $12.00 isn't bad and if you add $1.00 for the extra noodles, $13 for that MOUNTAIN of ramen is a steal.

I looked everywhere but couldn't find any other places that serve tsukemen in the Lower Mainland. I even scoured the lesser known ramen shops (...most of which aren't very good anyways) but came up empty.

But Santouka's is amazing and not a terrible value since you get a mountain of noodles.

yeah i ordered the large size and it wasnt that much more than a regular order for the tsukemen. i also found the tsukemen now to be pretty subpar. noodles were a bit too hard and not al dente. broth was lacking flavor. seemed better the first time i had it about a year and a half ago.

Started off dipping the noodles in the broth. By the third bite, I was eating it like a noodle soup (which would make it a little too salty, but better than bland).

In the end, it didn't blow my mind. If I'm going back, it'd be for their regular ramen.

The fact that some of my older blog posts use pictures that were sized for the old blog format has always bothered me since the pictures always appear too small. My post on Sushi Dai in Tokyo's Tsukiji Market is one of my most popular posts and has hundreds of thousands of views since it was posted in 2008...but all the pics were tiny.

Not surprised considering the amount of highly mixed reviews I found on Urbanspoon. I can only speak about my own experiences on my site and every time I've gone, I've had a good meal. Most of the complaints are about poor service, not the food.

Have you gone personally?

I went to the "low yau tiu" in richmond, and Im never going back mainly due to service and a little on the food. I love the beef brisket with ho fun, and its damn good value and is tasty thats why I frequent it before but I just couldnt get over the service.

3-4/5 times Ive went, the "yau tiu" chinese donut was cold/stale as Ikkaku said. It wasnt freshly fried or even hot for that matter, it seems like they fry them all before hand and keep them in their little container up at the front near the cashier and just take one out as people order. The last time I went which really pushed me over the edge was when I asked them if they could refry it or get me a hot one, and they said this was as fresh as it gets. So needless to say I was quite pissed

So to sum it up, the service sucks horrible there, but the food is generally good value and tasty I find.

Ronin
02-16-2013, 10:41 PM
I hardly ever judge Chinese restaurants in terms of service. I just expect mediocre service. If I pay less than $10 for a meal, the only things I'd expect are that the server takes my order and brings me my food.

Again, if you read Urbanspoon, your complaints aren't uncommon.

I just thought I'd bump the discussion since I went over the weekend.

Fries (I think at least) were better than LBP. Gravy was a tad saltier, but definitely some squeaky cheese being used at the Spud Shack. Overall I think it's a great place to watch the game with a beer and some great poutine!

Prices are somewhat in line with LBP, so I won't complain (but I will because how can poutine be so expensive? :okay:)

A little different today. A local Vancouver company, foodee, sent me this box of healthy snacks. Initially I thought there's no way this stuff is good but actually everything except one is quite good and I would eat it over the "unhealthy" alternatives.

If you guys want, I'm running a contest to win one. Easy entry...just follow on Twitter and like on Facebook.

Oh, thought you meant you were not a big fan of Yoshinoya from your blog.

Just chilling in HK now and the Yoshinoya here is pretty good lol especially their late-night hot pots :D

And yes, I know your post was about GyuDon Ya

Ronin

Yoshinoya just never stood out to me, probably because I usually go to Japan in the summer when it's too f'n hot out and all I want to eat is cold noodles. I can't remember the name of the chain I went to all the time but it was like 900 yen for a tempura don and a serving of zaru udon. That place was my favorite cheap eat.

And 680 yen for a chicken karrage don set at this place where you get a ticket out of a vending machine and some old man brings you your order. Add 100 yen for some fried squid or some edamame!

Want donuts as good as Cartems? Want to try the cronut craze that's swept Brooklyn? There's a spot on the island right off the ferry that sells stuff like this for pennies. No, seriously...apple fritters the size of your face for 75 cents. It's cheaper than Tim Hortons and, as much as it's Canadian blasphemy to say, it's just so much better.

Ronin

Not sure how helpful I'd be. Are you looking for authentic Mexican or tex-mex?

I value balance in my food and find that too many Tex-Mex places just cover everything in cheese and call it a day. Not my bag...same reason I love burgers and love bacon more but I have zero desire to eat a baconator.

I fucking love La Taqueria though.

Couple other things: Nosh, reviewed above is now closed and will reopen as a new branch of Salt Tasting Room. I'm told the people that work there might be the same and the menu is mostly retained? Dunno...will check again.

Went back to Longtail Kitchen today, also reviewed above, and it's still stupid awesome. All six people at the agreed. Chicken wings, coconut soup, fried oysters, pad Thai, roasted Thai hen, papaya salad, chicken satays, and a round of Thai iced tea for less than $20 a person. We were stuffed with leftovers.

How do you find the places to go in London etc?

Me and my GF will be in Paris for a week in may and looking to plan all our meals at various restaurants, I have a few fairly well off friends who have been a few times but mostly refer to like Michelin 3 stars etc where dinners are starting at 200+ euros

Kerbisher & Malt I found by searching "Best fish and chips in London". The Gun I found via Urbanspoon as well as searching "Best modern British restaurant in London".

Degustibus I found completely randomly. I like to take a few days in any city I visit to just wander around without any direction and just shoot. The streets were pretty empty and boring and I was getting hungry and it was the first place I saw.

The last three were also random finds as I was looking around London but with my family.

You don't need a lot of money to eat good food. Sure, it helps but there are a lot of great places that don't cost much money. Watch Bourdain episodes, Google around a little and you'll find places that locals go to for good food.

Ronin
09-18-2013, 11:13 PM

I was there last summer for drinks and took a peek at the food menu and it looked amazing and put it on my to-try list.

Then I went back this year and the menu seemed have all those interesting items removed.
I wanted to try the foie gras brulee dammit!
They had a lobster promo that they sent out via email.
So I got that and a couple of dishes to split between friends.
I was entirely underwhelmed at each and everything that came out of the kitchen.
I had heard that Alex had a co-chef or something that left?

Do you know if this is yet another menu revamp?
If so, I would be willing to give it another go once Alex gets his stuff sorted out.
I wanted to visit him when he ran his underground kitchen, it would be shame for me to write off Cache.

No, I didn't this time around because I only had a little time and wanted to try some of these new British restaurants. I did visit a few Indian places my last few times in London and it's like everything else...there are good restaurants and there are bad restaurants.

The old saying where ethnic food is far better than British food in England isn't true anymore. Yes, there's still plenty of very, very bad British restaurants serving the sort of stereotypical English fare that everyone likes to make fun of but more people care about what they eat these days in the UK and more good food is accessible to more people. It's not all Gordon Ramsay and whatever...there's now good, reasonably priced British food.

Was invited to a media dinner at Francesco's, an Italian restaurant on Burrard near Japadog. Had an amazing time...it's one of those old school restaurants with a seriously trained wait staff and classic Italian food with a modern twist or two.

about your post at rajio, the thing that looks like takoyaki could be satsuma-age. its made from fish paste but different japanese restaurants tend to make them differently. some more airy while some others more firm.

Ronin

It's definitely more firm. Yes, definitely the texture of fish paste.

Wow, you really read all that, huh?

^^...food trucks worth or NO?.

not really... i feel like im paying 20% more for my food each time i buy something from the food cart. All hype? Need Ronin to confirm.

Ronin
12-13-2013, 01:25 AM
Depends on the food cart and depends on the food. If it's awesome, it will demand a premium, especially since most food carts are downtown. If it isn't, then it isn't worth it. It's hard to say "worth it" or not. It's not like restaurants don't mark up their food beyond the cost of ingredients. Sure, food carts don't pay rent but they have costs as well.

I mean, is Cartem's worth $3 a donut when Tim Horton's has them for less than a buck? It all depends on if you're willing to pay for donuts that are awesome. If a food cart is expensive and their food tastes amazing, then it's probably worth it.

I don't mean what do you want me to answer...I'm just a guy. What sort of things would you like me to find out from...the experts. Chefs, managers, people that are on the inside. Do you want to know how they conceptualize their menu? How they pick ingredients? What do chefs do all day?

yeah, the raw talent they have, the Love they put into their food,The Concept behind their own Idea,Time it takes for them to produce & receive you food after order.

i don't want to hit up a food cart & see it's a complete waste of time with a shitty product of overpriced Hype, then feel like idiot for believing it would be worth it,bottom line...bad food needs to be put in it's place.
Because i know Japadog has such a nice product i must know if there is others hidden trying to break the surface :fullofwin:

My latest food adventure takes me out to New West, back to Longtail Kitchen (which I first wrote about for Vancity Buzz) but this time, the menu isn't Thai. They close at 7 every day so now they're hosting small, pop-up dinner events at the restaurant. Either one of the chefs or someone that likes to cook (*cough* Culverin...) can rent out the place and host a night at the restaurant.

Tonight, we have a 4-course menu. Check it out here: Longtail Kitchen ? ?Midst of Autumn? Pop-Up Dinner (http://edeats.com/longtail-kitchen-midst-of-autumn-pop-up-dinner/)

Also, if any chefs use bacon grease instead of oil :p

Some new posts:

Had a little too much sushi and dim sum in Vancouver lately? Maybe mix it up a little with some Filipino cuisine! Some friends and I recently made the safari out to Coquitlam to try Kulinarya Filipino Eatery.

You must get the crispy Pata (pork belly) and, if you're a bit more adventurous, this delicious Sizzling Sisig. If you're not that adventurous, order it anyways...and maybe just don't ask what's in it...

Been awhile since I've posted in here. My new marketing position keeps me busy but I still find time to take pictures of food.

Wrote a post for VCB on Sunday Supper Series at La Pentola, an Italian fine dining restaurant at the Opus Hotel.

Some new stuff. Posted a look at Torafuku, a new restaurant opened by the guys that run the Le Tigre food truck. It's over at Vancity Buzz.
