Shelby American To Unveil 950 and 1,100 HP Mustangs at 2012 New York Auto Show
By Matt Stone, Correspondent | Published Mar 27, 2012
Just the Facts:
-The Shelby 1000 is the most powerful Shelby Mustang ever, and comes 50 years after the original Cobra launch at the New York auto show.
-The first of two Shelby 1000 models is a "street" version, rated at 950 horsepower.
-The second powerful new Shelby is called the 1000 S/C, and is built primarily as a track car.
NEW YORK — By now you know that the 2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 will deliver 650 horsepower courtesy of a specially designed and purpose-built 5.8-liter supercharged V8 engine. That's right, 650 horses with a top speed of 200 mph, right off the showroom floor and backed by a Ford factory warranty.
But that's not enough for 89-year-old Carroll Shelby. During the last year or two, he talked nonstop about his "1,000-hp Mustang."
"I know we can do it, and we're close," Shelby said. "I want this to be the fastest car we've ever built, and it's got to be street legal and idle like a Lincoln."
The development work and testing are done, and the result is the Shelby 1000. In fact there are two Shelby 1000 models. The first is the "street" version, cranking out 950 hp and smog-legal in all 50 states. Lest you think that the big number is only the result of cranking the boost up on a 750-hp GT500 SuperSnake — no. The factory 5.4-liter engine is stripped to the block and given some serious machine work in anticipation of a new crank, rods and pistons. The heads also get a flow job, and the whole deal is topped by a new supercharger. The other powerful new Shelby is called the 1000 S/C, and it's built primarily as a track car. The much-warmed-over 5.4-liter four-cam V8 in this one is good for 1,100 horses.
Some Shelby American-built or modified Mustangs have been criticized for wearing too many different badges. Not so for the 1000. The front fascia gets a makeover, and the wheelwells are stuffed with forged alloy Shelby 1000 20-inch wheels exclusive to this model, plus massive brakes capable of corralling the big motor. The Shelby identification is present of course, but it's relatively subtle. The car looks the part, no doubt, but remains classy.
Naturally the fuel and exhaust systems get a major makeover, as do the suspension and interior. Ancillary gauges are mounted in a unique instrument cluster on the driver side A-pillar.
Price announcements and delivery dates are pending, however the 950hp version will carry $200k price tag.
If 650 hp is good from the factory, why not 1,100 hp from the aftermarket?

What other car out there with near-as-makes-no-difference 1000hp can you buy that's under that price tag? With a fully factory backed warranty?
They'll sell 'em all, like it or not.

It's not the power I have a problem with. It's the fact that I would take 50 others cars for 200k than I would a Mustang. Or... Make a Mustang with the same power as that for half the cost (being generous) with a crate motor and a Twin Turbo setup.

yeah except people that can afford 200k would rather have stock 950hp than modded. usually from factory the car is much more reliable not to mention the warranty.
Berzerker
03-27-2012, 02:32 PM
It's not stock. It's a modded mustang.
There are twin turbo setups that put out 685whp on stock internals. But wait were talking 1000hp. Built motor would run about 15k, add the twin turbo setup and your looking at 1000hp for 25k. Oh wait you want Brakes too? Saleen or Baer Racing both make brakes for around 2-2500$ a pair so 4-5k for race brakes all around. Hmm Suspension? Saleen has that covered too. So for the cost of a Mustang and another 30-40K you can have the same thing WITH adjustable boost from the turbo's.

i dunno.. thats like saying a c63 amg is a modded c class? or a 335 is a modded 328? if it comes from the factory like that i'd call it stock.

I think the X factor will be collectability, if they actually limit production (not like the gt500 "limited production") this car will have some killer collector value.... many, many, many years down the road.
This car will never have good value for money, you can take a 08 GT500/a brand new 5.0 mustang + a kenne bell kit (under 10k) will get you >800hp on stock internals

It also has an insanely better chassis, as well as suspension setup, though an older engine with less potential, the 1k HP mustang is meant for straight lines and turning is out of the question :heckno:
However, the point of this project was to show Carroll Shelby his dream of a 1000 HP mustang can come true in his lifetime. No one in their right mind would even make this niche "package" level for the sake of profit. It's probably 900% quieter then my car and 3x as fast.
The Boss 302 doesn't make Ford any more money then a Mustang GT, the car is again, a niche, it's simply to please the die hard fans that asked for it, as Carroll Shelby asked for his, I respect Ford for that.

It is a fail.
Who spends $200k on a Mustang?
Not even a 1969 Boss 429 goes for that much...
This car screams bad investment. Remember the gt500kr? Yup, there are 7 dealers here in Ontario with them still lounging on the lot.
$helby didn't even engineer the gt500. Ford only used them to subcontract them to build the GT500s. Ford's SVT engineers engineered the $helby GT500.
I am a huge Mustang fan, but there is no way I'd ever pay more then $70k for any Mustang. Period. You must be high if you pay that much. The most I'd pay would be $65k for a '13 GT500.
And even that is to much. The gt500 a few years ago was around $45k.....

Not true. There are zero incentives on the BOSS 302. z-plan,x-plan, d-plan and a-plan are not applicable. And in addition, most of them are going for list price. Resulting in higher holdbacks for the dealers. Now, when you see a plain gt. There is usually $1000s of incentives on them....

An AMG is a modded stock benz. Moreso before MB bought AMG but whatever. Pretty much the same goes for STi's to subaru's. It's a way to distinguish a modded car by the factory tuning company, for a lack of a better term. TRD to toyota too. Same basic gist. Except for the mustang has like..7

You seem to forget the cost of storing a car, insuring it, among other things. You cannot throw a car in a garage and call it a day. I've seen many low mileage “muscle cars” ruined because they were not attended to. Faded paint, trashed fillers...So on.
This Shelby is a poor investment. You will be hard pressed to flip it for a profit. The following limited-edition Fords NEVER appreciated in value the past year past its MSRP.
--2003-4 Mercury Marauder
--2001-4 Ford SVT Lightning
--2000 Ford Mustang Cobra R
--2003-4 Ford Mustang Terminator
--2007-12 Shelby GT500
--2008-9 Shelby GT500 KR.
And the list goes on.
Many people purchased the 2007 Shelby GT500 in the anticipation that it will appreciate in profit. A record 10,xxx were sold. Right now, You can pick up a wrapper car in the low 30s. And the price will continue to go down. Lets face it, the people who could afford the muscle cars from the 1960s are rich white baby boomers. ,,,who wants to relive their childhood when these cars were dirt cheap.
The fact of the matter is the collector car market peaked in 2004. The prices have been falling steeply ever since. The buyers for the “muscle cars” have also litterly been dieing off. Look at all the collections for sale. Besides, no car should ever be considered an investment. It is a depreciating asset.
Also, imo...You shouldn't buy a car and have it rot in your driveway. Drive the damn thing.
