Long shot: UBC Mining Engineering student looking for Summer employment!

Hey, so I figured I might as well post up on this forum.

Im just finish my third year of Engineering at UBC (Mining and Mineral Process Engineering) and I will be starting fourth year in September (Graduating in April 2013).

I am wondering if anyone would like to hire me for a 4 month internship. I have applied everywhere, and although I won't discourage recommendations and where to look, it is likely I have applied.

That said, I have applied to every Potash, Coal and VMS mine in north america, and every oil sands company involved with Fort Mac (Shell, Suncor, Syncrude, etc).

SO, if anyone would like a resume and a cover letter, or has any tips, let me know!

Thanks for reading.

Well, I just found this thread right now
I work in the mining industry (though more at the supply end of stuff)

Try the following consultant firms:

Hatch Engineering
SNC Lavalin (They do quite a few mines each year)
AMEC Americas Ltd.
BHP Billiton (though they are in Montreal IIRC)

I'll go update this post with more names when I get into the office on monday and look up some files

Try a construction contractor like Ledcor, Flint, Cord, SGS, Pacer, PCL, etc.

You will have much better luck with them then a client or engineering firm IMO.

And internship?? You don't expect to get paid? LOL...

The company that is going to give you summer employment, is going to be a company that wants/expects you to return once you graduate. Regardless of your education, each company uses a lot of internal procedures and doesn't want to hire you for 4 months, just enough time for you to learn how he company functions, and then lose you to school and another company once you graduate.

My two cents anyway.

Wow this sounds awesome! I already applied to SNC Lavalin and BHP, but I will give the other two a go. I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the names. I have given Ledcor an application but will look into the others.

An internship is not voluntary. It's just a short term contract that is salary. There are countless companies out there that will hire 4-month interns every year. I think Suncor and Syncrude hire almost 60 4-month employees (Students) yearly, and that is only one of the many companies up in the OS. And not every company will justify not hiring a student due to the chance they might not come back. Companies prefer students to work on some of their short-term planning/design since a long-term position is not needed, salary can be lower and benefits can be excluded. I have worked many 4-month internships and the company had no sour-spots due to the fact that I would not return afterwards.

Other than that, thanks for giving me the names. I'll try my best to get in contact with them.

May just just around the corner and I hope I find something soon

Keep an eye out even during the exam periods since companies love doing last-minute recruiting due to funding approval and sudden openings, etc.

Also keep an eye out for open house and recruiting events on LinkedIn and Twitter. SNC Lavalin held one in Vancouver back in February/March.

If you haven't already, take the time to tailor your resume and cover letter to every job description's key words. Generic resume won't get much feed backs.

Good luck and don't give up hope.
